Situated in the centre of Edinburgh, the Motel One Edinburgh-Royal is 5 minutes’ walk away from the train station, and only half a mile from the Castle. Guests can reach the historical St.

On Princes Street, opposite the Scott Monument and National Gallery, Mercure Edinburgh City - Princes Street Hotel has an excellent location, a friendly atmosphere and views of Edinburgh Castle.

Score from 241 reviews Good
Staff and location good
Strong smell of wet dog throughout hotel
Handy location for train, tram and bus connections and walking distance to city centre. Good local pubs and restaurants.
Old building, poorly maintained and badly in need of renovation and improved presentation all round. The (expensive) street parking nearby is almost unobtainable. Friendly but unprofessional staff. Overpriced for the basic amenities provided. The link with the Guards (suggested by the hotel's name) is unfortunate, given that regiment's reputation for impeccable turnout.
Lovely room - full of character and clean! Excellent view out of the floor to ceiling windows, perfect location with transport links! Very safe and secure too :)
4 poster bed - lovely to look at but not very comfy. Only 2 TV channels. Breakfast - although nice - could of had more of a choice I.E fruit and yoghurts.
Staff Location Clean
Price too high for very basic facilities.
Great shower(ensuite) Lovely linen Helpful, friendly staff Nice quiet, dark room for sleeping Kettle etc in room
Bed a little soft
Nothing it was filthy
Rooms were very dirty, lots of cables and what looked like unsafe electrics, shower screen had glass missing. Was one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in and was very expensive considering how bad it was
The rooms were small and in need of refurisment
Only 1 min walk from Haymarket stn and along main road to Edinburgh and trams to the airport .
? Location. ?
Small room. Sink taps hanging off. Curtain hanging off. Holes in the curtains. Bathroom had a foosty smell. Socket was hanging off the wall. Holes in the wall. Breakfast: no place settings because occupancy was miscalculated. No orange juice, only one tattie scone for two of us. Sausage was not good. Food was not fresh. Bread was stale for toast. Service was not professional.
Rooms smelt of smoke
The room too small. No dresser. Bed took up the room. No chair to sit on..
Had a great stay at the guards hotel room was lovely and the staff were great
The attentiveness of the staff was very good, thoughtful, helpful and dedicated to making your stay comfortable Very good value for money
Everything worked, but some repairs looked a bit temporary
Staff were so friendly, making it a very enjoyable stay :)
Dogs, dirty rug.
Staff did their best.
For some reason the partition to the en-suite was curved. This was completely unnecessry given the room size, but it meant you couldn't sit straight on the loo. Also there was no headboard to the bed, and the furniture was obviously poor qaulity with bits falling off.
Rooms were of a poor standard grossly overpriced for standard of accommodation on of the two rooms we had carpet was very dirty . other room had broken bed . breakfast was in organised and not set out at all it was in the bar only one member of staff . I would not recommend this hotel to anyoneseriosly thinking about contacting trading standards as it was not as advertised
Central location Comfortable room
There bead, room, every thing was good.
Their carpet was very dirty. They didn't clean the room or didn't change the bead sheet.
rooms weren't to bad bed was comfy
dogs running round hotel smelt like dogs no breakfast unless you ho next door generally tatty all round
Not as much what I liked as a description of the facilities. I will only speak about the room that I stayed in and the staff and common facilities. The room that I stayed in is fair value for money as long as you get a value deal here on Booking.com; standard prices are not so with regard to the standard you get. The hotel has a military theme and a connection with the Scots Guard Association. The free Wi-Fi connection worked just fine, when I got the password. It was missing from the room and I had to get the manager to retrieve it. The room I stayed in was the "Windsor Castle", a large room with an en-suite bathroom. The room and linen was clean and I slept well enough. The king-size four-post bed seems to have some of the hardest mattresses I have ever slept on, but I had no problem sleeping and woke up well rested. The hotel staff members were very friendly and in line with being a family driven hotel there are both young and not so young staffers. Not a problem really. The breakfast was okay, traditional British breakfast, egg, bacon, sausage, beans, and half a fried tomato. You get a choice of coffee or tea. You do your own toast and there are a couple of choices of jam. That said it has an excellent location right in the midst of Haymarket, 5 min walk from Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) and with train, tram and bus services almost on your doorstep. 20 min walk to the castle main gate. 15 min walk to Princes Street Gardens or the National Gallery of Scotland. There are lots of pubs and restaurants within a short walk from the hotel. Would I recommend it to others? Well, yes, as long as you know what you are in for and you recognise that I have only stayed in the hotels supposedly best room.
The hotel is badly in need for a total renovation, period. It is in line with many other British hotels residing in old buildings that has not had a total renovation. It has old windows and it would be cold in the winter I imagine, especially since the "Windsor Castle" is at least 6 or 7 meters from floor to ceiling. The floors are covered in carpet that has seen its prime and it move and make a lot of noise when you walk on them. One of the bed lamps and one of the spotlights over the dressing table in the bathroom did not work. The thing that annoyed me greatly and that there are no excuses for not repairing was the shower handles. Both the one for selecting which showerhead to use and the one turning on and off the water was loose and then I mean totally loose! This meant that they was nearly impossible to operate when wet. And they were prone to fall down and heavy enough to really hurt your feet if they hit you. I did not complain to the manager because it did not bother me enough this time around. There are as a rule only one person doing the breakfast and managing the reception and a girl doing the rooms, so all doors are likely to be open to the kitchen, the reception and the combined bar/breakfast room, meaning that smells of food being prepared will be entering all these locations at least some times. The tables were not dirty, but some had breadcrumbs still on them, not unlike restaurants with lot of people passing through. There was a dog that seemed to belong to the people at the hotel, it could be a nuisance and not necessary good news for people with allergies as it went in to the rooms while the maid made them up.
The rooms especially the four poster was really nice
Was only there for one night so nothing
Location, friendly staff
Room basic for price.
The room was very spacious (ground floor out front). Bed extremely comfortable. The very friendly Manager even ordered in dinner with no overhead charge for the delivery or service. Hotel is only 100m from Haymarket Rail Station. Breakfast and the service in the connected Scots Guards Club was great.
The position of the toilet leaves your knees jammed into the wall - needs repositioning.
