Don't expect slick organisation!
The location, the friendly staff, the rooms and the food.
Did not seem to be expecting me chef late on Sat morning Got bill messed up
Staff very helpful and welcoming Just what I was looking for........great food and atmosphere
Being in the country and still close to Yeovil.
Nothing, the room, en suite, breakfast, all more than acceptable
The beds and the breakfast variety available
A bit cramped but that can't really be helped
Staff were vey helpful, beds were very comfortable and the hotel was able to accommodate our group of 8, including 4 children (we booked x 2 triple rooms and x1 double).
the saniflow system in the shower/toilet room was quite noisy.
The village is charming
We stayed for a week in August. The Helyar Arms appears on booking.com as a hotel but, as the owner pointed out to us, it is not. It is a country pub with bedrooms upstairs. There is no staff member available on the premises after hours at night in case of emergency. The bedrooms were not clean, bathroom fittings not properly installed, lights not working in en-suite, toilet in one room was noisy and smelly. Breakfast was fine for the first few days but the kitchen ran out of bacon mid-week. We noticed that the cereal packets were out of date(3 -4 months). The bar ran out of cider during our stay. We ate dinner in the award-winning restaurant one evening, having booked a table that morning. We had to wait two hours for our main course to be served but the restaurant did not seem to be particularly busy at the time.
Loved the room and the village and would stay again.
Breakfast (for vegetarians) was sparse and took an age to be served. Both server and barman with whom we paid (the morning after) didn't want to be there and were none too friendly. Food itself ok.
We had been attending a friends wedding nearby, collected our room key 11am. They said our room wasn't ready so we dropped our bags in our friends room (who luckily were staying in the same b and b). On our return we walked into our room, only to discover two people sleeping in the bed! Tried calling the phone number, and knocking on doors and there was no response, and no provision for contacting anyone in case of a problem or emergency. Ended up having to spend the night in our friends room, thank god they were in the same bnb or we'd have been sleeping in the hallway. A refund was (eventually) offered, but it was too little too late. Avoid.
We were there on a hot summer's evening and the garden was great with lots of room for the children to run around. Beautiful village and convenient stop between London and Cornwall. Very friendly staff and pleasant bar inside as well as good garden.
The food was very poor. Quite an extensive menu but very disappointing. In particular breakfast was dreadful - one poor young chef was trying to deal with loads of people all by himself - results were disastrous. Ref rooms: the floors slope so that my grandson fell out of bed constantly during the night - his mum didn't get much sleep!
Free wifi - bright sunny room and fantastic staff - would highly recommend.
No bad points
The food and breakfast - very good Wifi Nice atmosphere in old pub building Good parking Good location for my meetings
great fish and chips, friendly staff, just around the corner from the church with T S Eliot's ashes, very pretty village
1st class and reasonably priced food Helpful friendly staff Good location
The room (Foxhole), was a bit tired all round, but the staff told me that it was one of the last to have a spruce up, so the other rooms were probably a bit smarter.
It was fairly cheap. A cafetiere and real coffee was available in the room.
The place was not open when we arrived. The fact that it did not open until 6pm was hidden in the small print of the website. The pub was dull and dingy and the food was very ordinary. The room was cramped and in the warm weather very stuffy. A fan might have helped. Only one small window opened. There was no sign of anyone who looked like the owner.
Size of the room, spacious parking, kindness of staff
Great location in a lovely village, spacious and clean rooms.
The pub closes between 3.30 and 6 which is an odd time. When we arrived nobody was there apart from a kitchen member of staff who let us in and checked us into our rooms. Rooms are expensive for what you get also.
Food very good, overall a pleasant stay
We only stayed one night en route to Cornwall having booked at relatively short notice and arrived too late for dinner. However we enjoyed a drink in the bar before a comfortable night in the bedroom, well equiped with drinks and toileteries. The breakfast was fine and if we did not know the area reasonably well with regard to National Trust properties we would certainly return for a short break. The village was lovely and the sunken lanes approaching the Helyar Arms were amazing if a little scary!
At the price, nothing.
room very cramped - pub shut before 10.30 - milk sour at breakfast therefore no hot drink poor choice of food at breakfast no menu just asked what did we want - not enough staff at breakfast waited ages to be served - bathroom cramped would not go back. apoligised for sour milk but no reduction offered shop minutes away could have gone and got some!
