Location was great, lovely traditional interior.
Poor room facilities, rooms were cold, generally over priced. Staff helpful but not well trained. Simply not a 5 star experience.
The building was lovely inside and out the staff were fabulous and the rooms clean lovely high ceilings ️️fantastic bathrooms ️️beautiful all round we stayed one night and had a lovely time such a nice hotel made our family trip more spiechal ️️lovely cooked breakfast also topped the morning off
Loved the Lauriston room. Very comfortable space. Great breakfasts and lounge areas.
Room was great but a little noise evident from other areas.
Great personal service. Very unlike the corporate chain hotels.
If you are over 6 ft tall the beds will be a bit on the short side.
Excellent staff. Breakfast was great. Rooms very good.
The room (Cramond) was lovely and spacious with a very comfortable bed, walk-in closet, TV/radio/I-Pod docking station, and a really large bathroom with wonderful claw-foot tub, separate shower, towel warmer, and really nice products. The breakfast and tea service offers a lot of options and I felt like I was in an old-world country manor in the heart of Edinburgh. The warm welcome I received and treatment of the staff throughout was superb.
The location was fine for me, but you do have a bit of an upslope walk into the heart of the New Town. The elevator is a bit slow and small, but I had been easily able to check my bag upon early arrival and when I came back to check-in, they had already brought it to my room.
Welcome was not good
I liked the traditional butler service
This is a well located wonderfully welcoming cosy boutique hotel with comfortable bedrooms and lovely big bathrooms offering a magnificent choice of quality ingredients for breakfast. Don't hesitate!
The whole experience of the Howard hotel was fantastic, the staff couldn't do enough for you. It's only short walk up the road to the princes street where all the shops are. The food also is fantastic not loads to choose from but all amazing.
The service was fantastic and the rooms were extremely comfortable.
The breakfast could have been on the larger size. One slice of bacon and a sausage doesn't fill a growing lad.
Privacy Breakfast delivered to cottage Peaceful location yet near centre of Edinburgh Relaxed atmosphere Breakfast quality and quantity Ability to leave bags after checkout
Butler service unnecessary Late delivery of breakfast order forms Lack of champagne flutes and mugs
Butler service was great. Breakfasts excellent. Location brilliant - easy walking distance to sights / restaurants and shops
Paying extra to park car at back of hotel
The friendly staff, excellent breakfast and the upgrade to a suite.
The sofa had seen better days
Very comfortable and peaceful. Excellent location. Very good breakfast. Complimentary tea/coffee anytime. Enjoyed an excellent dinner in the restaurant. Very helpful and pleasant staff. Thoroughly recommend it.
The rooms were beautiful and facilities could not be bettered. We arrived after a week travelling and were greeted warmly and staff bent over backwards to accommodate us, storing muddy bikes and even giving our son an upgrade. The food was fantastic, with options to dine in room or restaurant it is the perfect place to be.
No faults, if anything I struggled a bit with being so looked after.
Friendly staff and warm welcome .
Hotel is very tired
Staff were warm and professional Delicious food.
Weather was abysmal.
Comfortable small traditional hotel. When the butler service worked it was good.
Poorly focused staff. i.e. waiters would duplicate taking ones order but fail to deliver it or part of it, or in one case ask for our order having forgotten to provide the food menu. At dinner we had to ask for the wine menu, water and bread. Not 5* service. No staff were found to be available between 0030 and 0115, either in response to telephoning room service or actually going downstairs.
staff and food were great
Very friendly and customer service orientated staff - at all levels. The butler service gives a great extra touch over other hotels. Felt very welcome and comfortable from the moment we stepped in until the time we left. Staff went out of their way to help secure last minute tickets for the tattoo. And succeeded!
I would recommend to review the quality of the beds. I can't tell if it is just me being sensitive but I felt the one we stayed in (top floor room with entry facing the back staircase) was quite aged and lumpy. Particularly on one side. When I switched sides with my partner the experience was better.

Size of Room Poor Shower
We loved our first stay at the Howard, setting the stage for many returns. This boutique hotel with just 18 rooms feels more like your favorite aunt's house, with the wonderful ambience, stately public rooms, cozy lounge and most importantly, fabulous and helpful staff. My clients had a large room facing the back garden area of the house, it featured a massive rolltop tub as well as a walk-in shower plus a huge bed and two very nice armchairs. My room was a smaller standard double facing the street. I loved the breakfast, all freshly-prepared and served by smartly-dressed wait staff. The location cannot be beat. You are near the heart of Edinburgh and yet in a real neighborhood. Just ten mins easy walk away is Broughton Road, which is lined with many shops, cafes and small restaurants.
Next time I will splurge and get a room facing the back of the hotel. I will also get a larger room than a standard double. I made the mistake of seeing my clients' large room before I went to mine. Also, the front of the house is quite noisy and without the fan (provided) I would not have been able to sleep with the cars constantly passing on the street below. Cobblestones are atmospheric but they are also quite loud. I will definitely be back.
Dinner and breakfast and location. Free parking for our stay.
No bar, drinks served in lounge
The quality of service and food
Fronting onto a road with cobbles and no secondary glazing. The room was a little small for the marketed description.
