Score from 470 reviews Good
lovely looking pub, nice interior, nice beer, beautiful location with good views of blencathra and st johns in the vale. very nice dining room for breakfast, again with lovely view of mountains, very polite pleasant and attentive staff at breakfast good value for the money. easy enough to drive or bus to keswick or ambleside
seriously kept awake by road noise, unbelievably hard mattress and pillows( i woke several times with a sore face and my partner had sore ribs in the morning) a squeeking aa hotel sign swinging in the wind outside the window did nothing to aid sleep(room 2)would gladly visit again but never on such a hard bed!
We only stayed 1 night, room was nice and warm, friendly staff, cozy lounge and meal area, breakfast plenty to choose from, had great bar meal
Traffic noisy, but would not put us off staying again
Location at the foot of Hellvelyn, old coaching inn warm and frendly bar and lounge. Food was very good. Staff were very fre dly and helpfull
No bath.....but in saying that it is a very old building and the shower was very good
could have been a better bar menu with more choice
The staff and location. The breakfast and meals. All very good.
The room and bathroom were very small and a bit poky!
Location, good menu selection, well stocked bar
The staff were lovely, the views & the rooms were fab & the food was great
The radiator in the room was a bit dodgy.
Location and accessibility
The location was great and the price excellent but ...
The beds were hard and the quality and size of the bedrooms and bathrooms varied enormously even though we paid the same price.
Proximity to the area of the Lakes where we wanted to walk. Quirky staircase and pretty exterior. Had an evening meal in the bar which was quite nice, but nothing startling. Good real ale. Room was clean and comfortable with good TV reception.
There is (or at least at our visit) only one English member of staff who seemed to be spending most of his time troubleshooting for the Romanian staff who didn't understand basic requests. Everyone was pleasant enough, so it isn't a criticism of employing foreign staff, but the whole place seems to be lacking a clear identity. Areas of the building need a bit of reorganisation, such as the lounge area that resembles a poorly thrown together old peoples home with all the sofas and chairs lined up next to each other. Breakfast was nothing special but the room where it is served is quite pleasant. Basically, it's an ok place if you want to be near certain walking routes, marginally overpriced for what you get but certainly not the worst place we have stayed. Unfortunately, probably not good enough to make us want to go back though, sorry! :-(
Good position, easy access to Keswick and Ambleside. Easy parking good food.
On a busy main road not actually lakeside. Very thin walls so able to hear next door occupant very clearly including the 6am news on TV. Hot polyester duvets and brick pillows. All staff seemed to hate their work and were only passably polite. Oh yes and no hairdryer in the room only at reception.
Location was fine. On the main road, but I was not bothered by road noises. Keswick not far away by road. Food mainly good although a little too much pepper for my taste.
Difficulty with being understood leading to confusion and errors on bills. Inconsistent service during meals. Dead flies behind tops of curtains. Less than adequate coffee, tea bags and toiletries in room. Poor daily care of room - missed completely one day, bed not made. Extractors in ensuite not working.
We returned to stay at the kings head after 39 years. Very pleased with the standard of staff and food also the rooms - homely and inviting.
The shower was very good, lots of hot waters.
We found the bed very uncomfortable. So didn't get a good nights sleep.
Views Bus service if required half way between Keswick and Grasmere Good breakfast choice Good tea/coffee provision in room Plenty of parking
Very noisy extractor fan in bathroom Most taps needed new washers Coffee rather cool
Nice position. Comfortable beds Reasonable value for money
Too many foreign employees Long delay in breakfast service
THE FOOD WAS EXCELLENT The bedroom was adequate and we enjoyed our stay. the staff who are mainly Polish are very efficient and friendly
NOTHING Some proples expectation of a old building, soaked with character, are way beyond belief
Low maintenance on gents toilets
We were able to stay at this hotel with our dog and the staff even made an area in the seating area where we could have breakfast while our dog was with us which was great. Staff very helpful and friendly, room lovely and clean.
Only a few things to improve...papers available in the morning in the communal areas would be good, limited choice for vegetarians on the menus, only prosecco available was over priced at £7 for a small bottle - this wasn't corked and the wine was flat. Poached eggs for breakfast were over cooked as they were hard boiled.
The room was cosy with a great bathroom and the location was great with lovely views.
The room could have been a little bigger but gives everything you need.
Certainly had some character and history, a little gem on the side of the road. It was lovely to talk to the mix of nationalities passing through.
Although we like animals, we do not like to stay in rooms that we know dogs have occupied.
The Views; the food; the bathroom (we stayed in rm 4); the comfortable bed; the staff; the warm ambience. The breakfasts were great.
The traffic outside! Noisy in the mornings so sleep somewhat disturbed. For arachnaphobes it would've been a nightmare! There were often long waits for food in the evening, but the good was delicious once it arrived. A light on the desk in rm 4 would've been great, and for those who don't drink tea or coffee, no hot choc or herbal tea was offered, despite requesting this during booking. Dusting around the inner window frames would have eliminated the spider webs and the spiders could've been shaken off through the window.
Difficult to communicate with staff down to language problems, relating to breakfast staff Bigger concern about lack of supervision of 'junior staff' in the event of any emergency Poor fire safety (letter to M.D. sent)
The location was beautiful.
The bathroom wasn't clean, the light was broken, there was no extraction which resulted in a lot of black mould and it smelt like a public toilet. The windows in the room didn't open which made it feel like a green house during the day. The food was of very poor quality and seriously over priced, my partner sent his T-bone steak back as it was very over cooked, only to get another one in a similar state again but it was that late by then, we really didn't want to have to wait for another one again. Breakfast also left a lot to be desired, we're both chefs so we appreciate good food and know when it's not right, we could taste cheap bought in pre prepared garlic on the mushrooms which was just revolting with breakfast, poorly cooked bacon and inattentive staff who left us without hot drinks for the majority of our second breakfast there.
Room 15 was very poor mould on the windows, shower fittings and wall paper either missing or peeling from the ceiling due to dampness Bedroom furniture and fitting threadbare
