The Black Boy is a 16th-century inn within Caernarfon's historic town walls. It has good Real Ales, hearty meals, and is an easy walk from the center of town and 13th-century castle.

Score from 71 reviews Very good
bar food plus location close to Portmadog and railways Nice sea view walks
Nothing of note
Good location, well appointed room, plus parking right outside the room.
Buffet style breakfast was acceptable, not exceptional.
The Location and the Bar and Bar food facilities
The Damp Smelling Room
Nice bathroom and good sausages
Outstanding customer service at reception Comfortable bed Excellent dinner in the bar Reasonably spacious room Good location Friendly staff
Some areas in significant need of updating/upgrading Some bedroom fixtures and fittings looking tired/old fashioned Peach valance on the bed! Breakfast buffet was very 'budget'
Everything I needed in room. Staff helpfull.
Decor of room dated
Rooms were comfortable. Staff in the hotel/reception area very helpful, not quite so with the staff in the bar area.
Cooked breakfasts were disappointing. Fortunately there was cereal, yogurt and fruit. the tinned fruit rathr disappointing and not very good quality.
The sea view & the food
The friendly staff, the old fashioned ambience of the reception area, the location and the comfortable room.
The staff were helpful and showed a willingness to meet specific needs ie providing a breakfast earlier than normal due to an early departure
no enough parking for disabled
Hotel is close to town center.
I got a family suite room, but it was very small. The double bed was too small, windows not clean, all night could hear noise from the people that leave upstairs ( floor noise, hearing all steps from upstairs). In all hotel there is a bad smell because of the old furniture inside and tiny place.
Location of the hotel is good. Comfortable rooms and good food. The service by staff was good.
Bar food was good Breakfast sausages were good Location
Cramped room Old biscuit under bed
I liked the location. I thought the first lady we met was friendly and helpful. Bed and breakfast lovely. The bar was nice.
I was very disappointed in that the toilet in the ensuite wasn't as clean as I would have liked it. this was my first port of call when we arrived in our room....there was poo on the rim of the toilet and I had to clean it off before letting my family use it. this put me off everything at the hotel, but my husband told me it was only a little thing but as cleaning is one of my three jobs that is one thing I would never leave in my toilets!!! The bedding was spotless though. this is my only grumble.
Staff were very helpful, the breakfast was excellent and the location of the hotel was very good. The hotel had a lovely friendly atmosphere even if some of the decor was a little tired. There was a good choice of food available in the restaurant and bar but it was a shame that last food orders was 8.30pm.
The floorboards were very creaky and you could hear every footstep and bed creak from the floor above so it was difficult to get a good nights sleep. Also the car park was a bit small especially if a coach was parked there.
V good location for visiting N Wales, fairly quiet spot in Criccieth with 3 pubs and about 6 restaurants, some close Mon, not much of a beach but ok for touring, breakfast buffet plenty choice of starters and plenty staff to look after you, cheap food option in pub, had a room in annex cross car park for 3 nights in Aug with nice views , small compact room well planned to cover all needs, would use again if visiting area.
Reception and lounge are dated so not very welcoming start,
Room: spacious, clean, recently decorated, well equipped. Good value for the price.
Breakfast a bit ordinary, but nothing to complain about.
Staff could not have been more helpful. Room perfect, lucky to have large bright room looking over the see. Breakfast excellent. Location very pretty, really nice little town - strongly recommend for quiet comfortable break.
Staff were very friendly and the location was great
The rooms are very old and cramped, they even have a old smell to them, everything is very dated. The biggest problem were how thin the walls were, you can literally hear everything anyone else does in the surrounding rooms, we were in room 21 which meant we had a landing above us and it felt like a stampede when anyone walked along it. Not worth the money, very disapointed
shabby rooms smell of cooking all night very noisy in the night
Friendly staff Superb central location Excellent value Great views from room I occupied
Poor shower strength in my room on top floor, saniflow toilet was also poor. Both these factors were probably due to room position right at top of hotel, however the views out over the bay made up for it.
Staff were very considerate and helpful. Good access to town, beach, restaurants and pubs. Good bathroom. Good bar service for drinks and food.
The room for two people was very small and filled by bed and furniture which made it difficult to unpack or move around the room. Quality of bread at breakfast was poor..
Late night"guests" returning at 2am shouting, swearing with no regard for other guests. In annex rooms on ground floor the noise from rooms above with creaky joists and floorboards is not restful at all
