This former coaching inn is set in a unique position in the heart of the New Forest and has wonderful views of wild heathland and a delightful function room.
Score from 60 reviews Very good
convenient to places of interest and a discount for staying at the hotel
The room was quite small and dark with a small window that overlooked a brick building and a dirty stairwell. The cleanliness was not up to scratch as the bathroom was dirty from previous users. with hairs on the floor behind the door and in the bath.
Location is to die for. Ate in bar and prices not bad and food good.
Wifi not great. Pub menu could be improved as dogs only allowed in here and lacked atmosphere, maybe a little music on would help.
Dog was made welcome, even dog room service menu! Cute touch. Used her own bed though as more comfy!
Didn't like the fact dinner did not start until 7pm. Tired children need to eat earlier than that.
Staff were very helpful, location is perfect. Bed was comfy
The setting is lovely, and the restaurant at breakfast gives gorgeous views over the gardens and the river. The staff were very attentive and cheerful.
Cleanliness! We had to swallow allergy tablets as the room was coated in dust, especially on the window blinds! Every physical movement resulted in a spray of dust. While the room was clean in obvious areas, deep cleaning certainly wasn't on the cleaning schedule! We paid £400 for two nights and felt this wasn't value for money, and according to other websites, was double the usual price for Easter! WI-FI rarely worked on the top floor.
Location and helpful staff.
Lovely rooms, and wonderful afternoon tea
Very nice location and surroundings and the staff and premises matched that ambience
There wasn't anything we didn't like, except having to leave!
We loved our room (21), the food was wonderful, the staff could not have been more helpful and attentive. It was lovely to have the bar with the log fire,
The food and drink was overpriced with little choice for dinner if wishing to remain within the hotel. The breakfast was ok, although the cooked options came out not particularly hot.
The location was outstanding; the bed was extremely comfortable.
Location is great superb views and walks restaurant food fantastic although limited
The fried eggs.
The cheerfulness of most of the staff
The majority of the rooms are in an annexe which looks like a Travelodge and the bathroom was small tired and uninviting.
The public spaces were quirky and comfortable
Restaurant menu too complicated for the location, needs more basic food i.e. Fish or plain steaks.
Attended after my wifes fathers funeral, peace and quiet excellant choice.
We had a bath but no bath foam or anything, when we asked for some we were told there was none as most people preferred showers. Also a £15 standing charge on a taxi that would have been a 2.2 mile journey
The staff are excellent and couldn't do enough for you, and breakfast was excellent
Stairs to upper floor rooms extremely steep. "Shower" was hand-held only and hot-water was intermittent, main course outstanding but starters not good value.
Staff friendliness, privacy, quiet, outstanding service and cuisine.
The room was on the small side and the TV quite dated. We found the WiFi very slow.
Excellent location during the quieter winter months. The walks are good.
The food was expensive. We stayed in the Henry Adams wing, which needs updating. The room was dark with large and unattractive pieces of furniture. There wasnt much space in the room
Beautiful location, very dog friendly and delicious food. The staff were friendly and efficient. The bed was really comfortable, with a great choice of drinks in the room. There was a comfortable lounge with river views.
We paid £155 per night for our stay and probably should have looked more closely at the type of room we were getting. The standard room we got was not really any better than a good premier inn as it was set in a modern block with only views over the car park. The rooms in the actually 'Master Builders House' itself would probably have been much better with the character and quaintness we were really looking for. It was disappointing as the high cost wasn't really justified by the room provided. Not a disaster just something to watch for next time.
Great Shower, lovely breakfast, friendly staff, amazing setting once you stepped out of hotel, good bar food.
Coffee served one morning in cracked cup
The location and friendly staff
Could do with a path from the cottages to the hotel door to save getting muddy when wet.
Lovely view, fantastic location. Staff were very friendly and made you so welcome. Stayed 2 nights but wasn't long enough!
It is in a lovely setting and accessible to lots of other places within the new forest. Staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble
Location, friendliness of staff - welcoming, fun, enthusiastic. Good food. Pleasant surroundings. Defo return visit in order. We both really liked it here, quirky in a very nice way.
Location and friendliness of staff.
A wonderful little hotel steeped in maritime history. Amazing location on the river bank. Fantastic restaurant.
