Everyone was very helpful. We needed to visit a nearby country home, the office staff found the best way for us to do this plus quotes on taxis. We had to catch an early train and would have missed breakfast but they packed a beautiful breakfast for us to take with us. The bar lady was great, very friendly, this was by far the friendliest place we have stayed at during our holidays.
Location. Between station and national bus stop. Not far from city centre. Serves well its purposes.
Old building, you could hear your fellow guests talking and watching TV.
Staff were very responsive. Excellent breakfast cooked to order.
very welcoming attitude
The staff were very helpful and efficient.
The hotel room (room 23) was not clean. The bathroom was an antique disgrace with an atmosphere of ingrained filth and decay. A strange smell of toilet freshener spray mixed with what this normally masks pervaded the premises.
Bed comfortable- nice crisp sheets Breakfast - good
Room on front of hotel-noisy because had to keep window open. Busy late night with people out having fun. Decor - shabby
Close to rail station, bus station and Town Center. Good "value for money" food. Comfortable bar and lounge areas. Very clean, well serviced rooms. Helpful staff.
Furniture and decor rather tired and well worn but the staff obviously do their best to ensure this does not spoil the general feel of the place.
Comfy beds, good location
No shower in room, only a bath
Lots of tea coffee and hot chocolate in the room Breakfast was great! Clean Good bar!
Not really the hotel's fault but it is opposite a club so noisy on a Saturday night!
Unfortunatly, being a weekend, you're not warned about the busy night club next door... Could litterally here the details of every fight, police interaction and chavtastic screaming until gone 3am!
No wifi connection from my room as broken
Very handy location in the centre of town Friendly staff and best full English breakfast I've ever had!
Their restaurant is attached to the hotel, which is sometimes convenient.
The rooms facing the road are noisy at night because of the traffic. So if you are a light sleeper, ask a room on the other side.
The staff were very nice and helpful.
Lack of A/C was an issue for us as Americans and it was in the middle of a heat wave so I wouldn't hold it against them.
Old furniture, breakfast old style and served by staff, room was very old and needs updated. Noise outside room (alleyway used until late by a variety of people for a variety of purposes) and the alleyway and back yard was very dirty with rubbish.
Staff, Location, food
Street noise is loud, accommodations are very dated WiFi only available in lobby
Location. Varied menu. Polite and helpful staff
Room slightly small for 2 people. Broken chair in room
Clean room. Room was nice and cool during hot weather. Great breakfast
Toilet seat was broken - they did fix it though!
Lovely traditional old pub. Good breakfast choice.
Room cramped. Carpet in need of some TLC as was some of decor-some of paintwork a touch grimey
My sister and i stayed at The Merton for 3 nights. The room was a good size with twin beds, which were very comfortable. The room supplements were good,Coffee, chocolate, and tea,the bathroom supplements were good soap, showergel, shampoo. The English breakfasts were good. The staff went out of their way to help us with a problem that occured. The Hotel is in an excellent location, near the Train station, and the bus station just across the road, the City is just to the right of the Hotel, all shops ,Cathedral etc, within walking distance.
Reception staff on arrival was excellent with our bags carried to the room. Breakfast was a well presented meal, although the dining room staff could have shown more personality.
The room was rather small with creeky floorboards and walls thin enough to hear next room's telephone conversation.
Bed was comfortable.
Staff weren't very friendly. Notices stating how hot food in the room would not be acceptable and fines would be added if discovered. Toilet barely flushed. TV remote just about worked. Shower wasn't great. Pillows were worn and uncomfortable. Ensuite was cramped and dated.
Friendly and kind staff. Breakfast was good
The bed in our room was really uncomfortable and creaked with every move. Also the floor boards were incredibly creaky too. It was the noisiest room I've ever stayed in.
Meals are agood qualitty. Breakfast Very good.
What WIFI they say they have however it is such a poor quality you need to work in the bar (Or is that the Idea) No Shower, bath had a 3" crack leaking into the main Kitchen. Informed staff on first day. No alternative room offered through out the stay. In the end I used the bath as they had no concern I why should I (You just need to keep topping it up during the bath)
The location was very convenient, both for arrival by coach or train and for access to the city. Very good breakfast, and the bar served excellent meals. As it is on the main road I requested, and was given, a room at the back which was quiet. Very helpful and friendly staff and it was a pleasure to stay here.
The room was basic but satisfactory .. however there was a bit of a smell in the room, perhaps of carpet cleaner, but this may not be permanent and should not deter prospective guests.
