During the Siege of York, the inn, then known as the Bird in Hand, was ravaged by fire when the Earl of Manchester's men bombarded the city in June 1644. Over a hundred years later, it was rebuilt and renamed the Lamb & Lion by a wealthy merchant.
Today, the inn offers an excellent selection of real ales, wines and champagnes, alongside home-cooked food, with daily specials featuring good, simple dishes prepared using fresh ingredients.
With a superb view of York Minster as a backdrop, the Lion Bar Outdoor Grill operates most fine days throughout the year and specialises in delicious barbecue cooking.
The Lamb and Lion is a part of the group that also owns the award-winning Harvilles Restaurant, one of the citys most revered eateries, renowned for prime Aberdeen Angus beefsteaks and fresh fish. Staff will be happy to help you with a table reservation at the Inn, the Lion Bar Outdoor Grill or at Harvilles. Please check with any member of the team.
At the top of the inn is the Attic, a lovely hideaway where you can almost touch the medieval stone walls of the ancient fortifications.
All of the rooms boast beds with handmade mattresses and crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. Every room has a flat-screen TV with Freeview digital channels.
Each of the rooms has an en suite bathroom with a power shower and luxurious toiletries and bathroom products from Duck Island.

The staff were very helpful, the rooms large clean cosy and well decorated and it was 5 minutes walk from shops and sights The breakfast room was a bit cold but it was minus something outside and snowing |

Locality of the hotel is excellent for shopping and site-seeing. Staff were very friendly and helpful. 2-3 Real Ales in a busy bar. A hearty breakfast. |

Gorgeous room, very comfortable, tastefully furnished with a very comfortable bed. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and accomodating. Fantastic location. We would definately come again. |

good, well-presented food, quaintness of inn, retention of original features, appreciation of volintary up-grading to the attic room on-site parking would make it 100% perfect, the unavoidable double return trip to the car park is a slight inconvenience |

Despite the mioxed reviews we loved this place. Our room was clean and very nicely furnished. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was very good. I'm really glad we booked there and would love to stay again. |

The inn was stunning in an amazing location, right by the minster. Free drinks on the house! Our room was a petite double but was not petite at all, it was roomy and comfortable. The inn bar was brilliant, as was the beer garden with it's view of the minster and lots of little snugs and corners, just gorgeous. Paul the manager was excellent, a lovely man who can't do enough for you. I would recommend everyone and anyone to stay here. Only a few faults, our room was right at the top and it got very warm. And my partner went to breakfast alone one morning and he said the service was awful, but this was due to them being under staffed, when I went down to breakfast the following day, the service was brilliant. |

The breakfasts that we had were delicious! We had booked the Delux Room for our 3 night stay. The room was not Delux! There was no wardrobe or bedside tables. Very ordinary! |

Old building in an historical city. Adjacent to city walls close to Minster and on a street full of Restaurants. Strong smell of disinfectant from toilets close to some eating/drinking areas.Accept there may have been a single incident. |

The staff were very helpful they made your stay very wellcoming and there food was basic but was really good and filling and we ate there twice during are stay and had a great evening with the staff and the locals.The breakfast had a excellent choice. Good all round. The cleaning was good but left little things out our shower head needs a good descaling and the tiolet had a crack in it, but the room was very comfortable and we slept very well. |
