This 17th-century inn is in the town of Barnard Castle, with a traditional cozy bar, 3 restaurants and charming rooms with attached bathrooms that are surprisingly spacious.
Score from 62 reviews Very good
Situated on the outskirts of picturesque Barnard Castle, this former working farm, with animals still in the fields, has been turned into a contemporary, unique and quirky hotel.

Great staff, lovely food and room. Very happy. Loved the Spa as well.
Nothing really. We'd like to come back some time in the future.
The Full Morritt breakfast
No loo paper in the loo roll holder! Too late......
Personable and attentive staff; willing and welcoming, particularly at Reception and in the Bar. In the main, very good breakfasts. Wonderful country, and some very good walks behind the hotel, as well as much else to see locally. I expect we shall return with pleasure.
Constantly being told 'You're welcome' when I acknowledged the delivery of the various parts of my breakfast. Also the fact that my wife's Haddock was not adequately cooked, and when we drew the attention of the waitress, she removed it without any apology or effort to rectify, simply saying she 'would tell the chef'. Nothing further was heard. Otherwise, the food was very good throughout our two days.
The Morritt Arms was ideal for our 2 day break Easy to get to and good location
Comfortable bed, great breakfast, nice cosy lounge, interesting bar
The room was very comfortable if a bit chilly at first. The Bar waiter was very helpful.
The portion size of our bar meal was small. No Veggie breakfast option and no concern showed about this by the waitress. Parts of the public areas are looking tatty. Saw a restuarant waiter serve to drinks holding them in his hand rather than from a tray.
The hotel has a great atmosphere. Food was lovely, staff friendly.
I asked for a room with disabled access because my father at 92 struggles with stairs. The downstairs room they gave him was very nice but we were unaware of the hike to it! Would be nice had they notified us it was quite a distance. We had to pick him in the car for breakfast!
Fine dining to a very high standard with friendly and very knowledgeable staff
Really good hotel
Room was a bit small for the price
Very good staff, a comfortable atmosphere and very reasonable price for bed and breakfast.
The water in my bedroom was cold/lukewarm first thing in the morning, i.e. 6.15 am.As a result I was unable to have a shower.
Friendly and helpful staff in a lovely building full of character. amazing menu and excellent food. The chef came out to chat to people after the meal and was able to give interesting information about food sources and menus. I would recommend this hotel to everyone.
Wifi poor all else good
Staff were superb, nice and friendly. Location and Hotel Decor are superb
The room was a bit weary, needs decorated
Having stayed several times before I was expecting a good standard and if honest this was the best. Room spot, bar comforted, dining, this was absolutely superb and well worth staying for. The evening dinner was presented very well and each course mouth watering. Definitely staying again and will be buying my staff some short breaks here, although I am tempted to keep it too myself.
Leaving in the morning.
The Morrit Hotel is known locally as a cheap location for wedding parties and best avoided. A very noisy hotel, with loud music playing till after midnight. The run down shabby interior bares little resemblance to the pictures on their website. The standard twin room we were given was very small with poor fittings. It was too noisy to eat in resetarunt so we drove the 10 miles into Barnard Castle and had an excellent dinner at the 3 Horshoes Hotel. A far better place, only wished we had stayed instead!
Bar, atmosphere and helpful staff.
Very clean and quiet room as requested, marvellous spa available, even at weekend, comfortable
food could have been better and staff more attentive
I had a Chargrilled ribeye steak and it was to die for, the selection of wine and real ales was also impressive, very comfortable atmosphere
The room was comfortable with lovely bathroom facilities. Food was excellent both dinner and breakfast.
super breakie lovely room very nice shampoo and conditioner in bathroom staff very accommodating would go again
we were in a front room it was very warm we had the window open and the noise from the road was not good- kept me a wake we would request a room not on the front another time
The Hotel and its gardens, the staff were very helpful, food excellent, I will book a short break there again, there are lots of interesting places to visit,
If you are at the front of the Hotel it can be very noisy because of the busy A66, so book a room at the back.
This was an absolutely beautiful hotel, and was value for Money. The room was exquisite with a wonderful view of the castle and grounds. Would highly recommend.
We stayed in easily accessible spacious garden rooms next to each other, perfect for us as we were travelling with a elderly family member. Lovely gardens, good bar meals, friendly and efficient staff. Also accepted our small dog. All good!
breakfast very good and staff very pleasant. Situation and appearance of hotel Decor lovely
No hot water for a bath in the evening. New light bulbs needed in bedroom. Too many stairs and no help with luggage
Restaurant was excellent - fantastic atmosphere and excellent food
TV in room - the furniture had obviously been moved and the TV had not so unable to see TV from bed.
