Although abounding in reminders of the past, York is very much a city for the here and now, with excellent shops, bars and restaurants, many along the River Ouse. Surrounding it are the medieval city walls – the longest and best preserved in England – and many of the gates that once gave access to the city.
Walk the walls for wonderful views of the city and towering York Minster. Standing proud on a hill, this cavernous church is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the 2nd highest position in the Church of England.
A little south is The Shambles, a narrow street with medieval buildings that now house quaint shops. Going further back in time is the Jorvik Centre, a fascinating museum showcasing the city’s Viking remains. You can even try out archaeology for yourself at the DIG excavation pits, with replica finds from York’s Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian eras.
Other York attractions include the National Railway Museum, home to the Flying Scotsman and Mallard trains. Around a 30-minute drive away, Castle Howard is a stately home on an over 1,000-acre estate.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is the nearest airport, and there's a great range of hotels, B&Bs and guesthouses in York and on the outskirts available on Booking.com.

Parking is the biggest problem, but saying that as York is flat it is so easy to walk everywhere. The busses are plentiful and frequent should you want to use them. Everything is within a short walking distance. There are so many things to see, and visit. The array of eateries was quite amazing and the prices more than reasonable. You can go as an individual or family and there are so many things to do and see for all age groups. The people are so friendly and accomodating. York is steeped in so much history.

There are lots of things to do in York and I found staying in the city centre a great place to experience some of it's delights. I enjoyed an informative journey on the hop-on hop-off bus tour, which also gave me a good over view of the city centre. The Jorvik Centre was an experience and was not what I was expecting, namely the motorised carriages that formed part of the experience. The art gallery had a marvellous exhibition focused on drawing when I visited, it included work by teenagers who had worked with the artist - all absolutely brilliant! The cafe in the gallery is well worth a visit. The Bluebell pub on Fossegate is a wonderful haven from the bustle of the city. There is so much on offer in York.

Our first visit to York and really enjoyed the city.
Our first visit to York and really enjoyed the city.
We took a bicycle tour which was really great and very informative, walked around the city and its walls, ate and drank well.
Check out the museum gardens.
The city seemed busy with hen/stag parties, so just bear this in mind when you’re thinking about dates and spending time in town at later at night.
Lots of good restaurants to choose from and plenty good beer to drink.

York is full of history and lots of places to visit, with many in walking distance of the town centre.
The are plenty of dining options from many traditional pubs, restaurants, both lower cost and more expensive, and a great hop on hop of bus system to help explore the town.
Some highlights;
the FREE Railway Museum; very impressive, with plenty more to come. Has to be the best free museum we have been to.
York Castle Museum. Not free, but great value and really well done.
Pretty much everyone walks the wall and definitely well worth it

Unfortunately we went during the school holiday and the Jorvik centre etc were all fully booked but did go to the minster which was worth a visit and the railway museum which was amazing .we used the blue open top bus as the ticket lasts for 2 days so we just hopped on and off.i walked around the wall which was good exercise and took just over 2 hours
The whole hotel was exceedingly lovely. Its old interiors were fabulous and loved every minute of our stay. The room was big with a four-poster bed just the ticket when you're on your honeymoon. The location was approx a hundred yards from York Minster which we toured. Breakfast was good and tasty and very satisfying especially as we had a five and a half-hour drive home. The staff were very pleasant and always greeted us with a smile, which I liked, and were eager to please. The Hotel gardens were also a feast for your eyes.
We chose this hotel because of the good reviews and location and on site parking, unfortunately the only room available was a twin, best nights sleep I've had since we were married, the beds were so comfortable, room was a decent size en suite with everything you needed, even a fridge and small freezer compartment. And a fan. Really nice cooked breakfast in the morning. 10 min walk to the Minster and city centre. Staff were really welcoming and helpful, we will definitely book here again next time we come to York.
We started travelling very early in the morning. By the time we arrived at the hotel, we were exhausted and it was still too early to check in. The gentleman at the reception was very kind to find us a room to rest at no extra charge, we really appreciated especially travelling with our very young daughter. The location was good, in a quiet area, a short drive to York city centre. Plenty of choices for breakfast, room was spacious, very comfy beds, heat was very good for an early winter trip.
The hotel was immaculate, the staff on reception a credit to the company, a particular mention is required for Petra, Carla and Charlotte.. smiling, full of fun, a joy to talk to..room 128 very clean, quiet and very comfortable. The hotel is very close to the center of York, easy walking.. The buffet breakfast was excellent both mornings, well stocked, great selection of both hot and cold food...
Gorgeous, clean and cozy, this hotel is probably the best place in York.
The staff is excellent, certainly very well trained and very kind. Their teamwork was very good.
Rooms are gorgeous. We went for the cheapest and it was already large and beautiful.
The food at The Rose restaurant was delicious and prices for that quality are reasonable.
Take me back please.
The hotel is in an excellent location for visitors to York, walking distance to various heritage sites. The building itself is very historic, charming and clean, I was upgraded to a junior suite (thank you) which gave a little more space for the 3 night visit. The room was comfortable and well serviced. Breakfast was nice, bar was pleasant and the staff were helpful.
Great hotel, the staff where really friendly. We chose this one because breakfast was included and the rooms where a good size. Breakfast was good. Our room also had a jacuzzi bath and a four poster bed. There was also parking round the back. It was about a 40minute walk into the centre of York and there was a nice pub down the road. We would stay here again.
Wonderful, historic building. Super clean. Lovely staff. Really nice room. Excellent location 5 minute walk to York centre. Warm. Air con in room fully adjustable. Coffee/tea making in room well stocked. Included biscuits. But best thing were the really nice staff. This will now be our York hotel of choice.
Good location, plenty of buses opposite Hotel, to get into York centre, train station 15 minutes walk away and lovely clean room, pure white soft towels, couldn't fault anything and breakfast was delicious! Lots of choices!! Had a double room on ground floor and would definitely book again!
It's a great location for visiting York which we knew as we have stayed there before. The room was a good size and resonably comfortable. We were at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park, so at least it was quiet. The staff were very helpful, we didn't try the breakfast.
As aways, the room was spotless and had everything that we required.
The bed was very comfortable and the black-out curtains ensured a good nights sleep.
The hotel is ideally situated for functions at the York Barbican and Picadilly
Staff were friendly and helpful, room was comfortable, breakfast was lovely. Great location for York city centre, the car park is a bonus. I will definitely be back I loved the hotel and York is fab especially at Christmas time.
Ideally located for the City Centre and York races, this lovely hotel reminds me of stays as a child as though sone of the decor is dated it's very clean and the staff are very friendly it's also excellent value for money too.
Staff were very friendly. Hotel is fairly close to York city centre (20 minute walk). Street was very quiet and safe. Lots of parking available for cheap. Room met all our expectations with a free small breakfast provided.
Host Michal was super helpful and friendly. Hotel was a comfortable 10-15 min walking distance to York city centre. Heating was good for a chilly March evening. Housed in a lovely building.
Great location just outside York City Centre. Value for money. Great breakfast. Clean room. Excellent staff and customer service honestly best staff I’ve seen at a hotel for a long time.
Beautiful boutique hotel with only a short walk to york minister. The staff went above and beyond in so many areas to make our stay perfect! Amazing room called the "Yorkie"
Great location with parking just a short stroll from the centre of York. Superb for a short break with the children as so much more space than a hotel.
