Really good location, stunning views, friendly helpful staff. Will be going back!
location was excellent as we were backpacking staying at hotels each night
very expensive for the size of the room, food also very expensive, not many staff about waited at reception every time we needed info etc
Location and food
The location is stunning. The staff were excellent - the barman and cook were run off their feet on the first night (due to additional customers from elsewhere) but still kept a smile on their face and couldn't do enough to help.
Beautiful location that is great for walking. Do take advantage of the free pass to the Langdale complex that has swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and a really nice cafe area + restaurant (cafe and restaurant are not free!). The room was good and the staff were helpful.
While the staff were helpful, my wife and I felt they could work harder to be warm, friendly and hospitable. It was as if they had no time to be 'human' with the guests so that we could feel at ease and welcome. But they weren't at all rude, and always responded to questions we had. Also, several times we range the bell at reception and no one came after a good few minutes so we just went into the office and got the room key for ourselves! Not a major problem, just slightly annoying!
Enjoyed the food, nice atmosphere. Staff were generally helpful.
Beautiful room with the best view in the world so I forgave not having a bath which would have been nice after losing our way on our walk.
A late decision for a trip to the lakes landed us at this unusually located hotel which were still one of the few offering good reviews at a decent rate. But boy was this a gem of a find. The location is not too central but an easy drive from Ambleside and 30 minutes to Windermere. Your own car is obviously a must. Many stay here it seems for the walks close by. Make sure it’s still light when you first arrive in order to find your way as the roads can be narrow as usual. The surrounding views are simply amazing, nestled in the mountains. This is a classic country retreat with a nice spacious garden, plenty of lounging areas, sizable pub and a classic dining room. Food options are plentiful for both bar dining and formal in the restaurant. We ate in the restaurant the first night and the food and service were fantastic at a reasonable price. Breakfast was included and equally good and the hot full breakfast options were cooked to order. The mansion was old but interior definitely wasn’t. Our room was in the annex and perfectly maintained. The room was small but very new and clean. Interestingly the bathroom was almost as big as the room and immaculate. You can expect good toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, dresser, LCD TV, bathrobes, hair drier. We had no safe or ironing facilities in room. Overall a very fine stay and a brilliant way to experience a British country retreat. Surpassed my expectations and highly recommended.
The Wifi was free but spotty and slow, however definitely usable. This shouldn’t be a priority if you are staying in the lakes. I guess the location plays a role in that. This was important as there is obviously no cell signal in the area. Our bed was very very soft and while some finds this great others have real problem with soft beds. I didn’t particularly like the softness, also as a couple when 1 moves around the other definitely feels it. It feels like the springs were not very supportive. Other things to note, breakfast is early from 8 to 9:30am, but this is really to cater to those that stay here who are mostly trampers. Check out is also early at 10:30am.
Friendly, welcoming staff. A traditional feel, with breakfast served (not a buffet!)
Great location, perfect for a rest and as a base for walking. Food and drink in the bar just what's needed.
The wifi internet connection seened really slow and was variable in different parts of the hotel.
Beautiful views, comfortable room, but rather expensive for what you get.
Asked for early breakfast and was told it was ok to go down early. Sat by window since restaurant was empty, but was then told to move as it was laid up for two people! Well really- after paying over £100 for the room and not arriving until after dark the night before, I did think it was a bit mean to deny my the view while I munched on my toast for 15 minutes. I had to sit in a dark corner with no view, in an empty restaurant! I ask you!
Room a little too warm at night
Location with lovely views and peaceful.
Food a bit overpriced and in our room we had the constant noise of the cooler in the cellar which made sleeping not that easy.
Beautiful location, great walking in every direction and the Sticklebarn Tavern right across the path. What's not to like?
Area, food ok , building , bar staff and waiter/ess' .gardens. Towels.
The manageress . She was disingenuous somehow. . . The decor is very dated and still smells of old tobacco and the lounge is dour. The bar staff should ask if you are a guest for the 10% discount on food . We were not told that there was no shower and getting in and out of the bath was difficult owing to medical problems.
Location great. Outside area well set out and gardens well kept. Pub food good and priced well. Well furnished and decorated room and en-suite.
Limited area to park. Bit hot up on top floor for sleeping. Maybe a fan in room would have helped.
Beautiful location, very helpful and friendly staff. Recommended
Had to go home.
Good selection of hand pumped beer, with excellent bar food. Very friendly staff, and a wonderful cooked breakfast with all food freshly prepared.
We found the restaurant a bit of a disappointment, due to it being a set taster menu and no al acarte menu.
Is for old people
Room was fantastic. Staff very helpful and friendly. Excellent breakfast. Excellent location.
Bar food puddings a bit small for the price. Should use real cream and not UHT canned stuff.
Breakfasts were excellent and served promptly; everybody wanted to get out onto the hills so did not want to linger.
A very well run hotel, in an excellent location for walkers and climbers, with courteous staff, and an efficient breakfast service
Some repainting is called for in the corridoors/hallways on the first floor.
We have stayed at Dungeon Ghyll before. Views and area are lovelyand it is a place to get away from the "rat race".
Stayed in a room where we heard the ? Air conditioner motor under the window (outside) for nearly most of the day and night. Unable to open the window on a night when the weather was very warm due to the noise of the motor. Came home for a good nights sleep.
Food was lovely but little on the expensive side.
Lack of signal on mobile phone.
view from bedroom, outside bar tables, garden, peace & quiet
absence of single rooms, having to pay double rate for single occupancy
