Score from 315 reviews Wonderful
Friendly, comfortable, warm. Good bar meals. Good breakfast. Good beer. Good to visit when camping in Langdale as well.
Small bedroom for a double.
I stayed here due to the race I was doing starting literally outside the door. Generally the hotel was good, maybe little pricy by comparison to other local places but I wanted the convenience of the location and not having to worry about getting to the start on time. If I stayed over again I may consider staying further out where there would be more facilities and choice for evening entertainment
Friendly staff always pleased to help.
Peaceful location. Easy access to fells. Helpful staff. Good food, good ale, what more can one wish for.
Lack of internet in rooms. No signal on mobile phones Prices a bit steeper than should be.
poor food menu
I loved the location at the foot of the Langdales, which was the reason for going. The breakfasts were good and the service was excellent. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.
For the price we paid for the room it was minute and for that reason I would not return to this hotel. You are paying for a location, not for a room. There was only just enough room to walk round the bed and, in the night, the chair created a toe-stubbing hazard!
The hotel was very clean, and staff very efficient, and the beds very comfortable.
I have visited this hotel a few years ago, and my disappointment was the lounge. We visited a country hotel with character, comfy settees to sink into, and an open fire. This time we visited a hotel in the country, with a contemporary decor and furnishings reminding me of a travel lodge. Our bedroom was the same, with curtain material wrapped round panels on the wall, not watercolours of the surrounding countryside. I am disappointed very sad by what I found, with the changes made to what was a lovely hotel, and will look for a more traditional and comfortable hotel in the future!
At arrival there was nobody to greet us and there was a pile of luggage obstructing the reception desk. Felt rushed at breakfast. They brought cooked breakfast while we were still eating cereals and seemed to expect us to put the cereal aside. After evening meal we were ushered straight into another room for coffee so that staff could clear tables, although the coffee tables themselves were littered with previous diners' coffee cups, etc. Had to ask for heating to be put on in the evening.
The rooms were very clean & tidy bar staff polite and helpful.
The breakfast food came out on cold plates. We booked an evening meal at the hotel. The chef got the meal wrong 3 times we sent it back. We ordered steak came with sauce over it no mention of sauce on the menu, it should have come with tomatoes onion rings and mushrooms which it didn't and finally when it did come back one plate had the sides and the other hadn't. Very disappointed. Will think twice about booking at the Dungeon Ghyll.
suitable for anyone who choose tracking activity other than enjoy the lake atmosphere
too far from the lake district
The staff at the hotel and the adjoining Walkers Bar were all extremely friendly and helpful. Special thanks to Ursula and Chris. The breakfasts rate among the best I've ever had.
Fabulous location in the Langdale Valley.
Room décor rather plain and "uninspiring". The adjacent Stickle Barn was closed on the Monday when we stayed.
Patchy Wi Fi
Really good location, stunning views, friendly helpful staff. Will be going back!
location was excellent as we were backpacking staying at hotels each night
very expensive for the size of the room, food also very expensive, not many staff about waited at reception every time we needed info etc
Location and food
The location is stunning. The staff were excellent - the barman and cook were run off their feet on the first night (due to additional customers from elsewhere) but still kept a smile on their face and couldn't do enough to help.
Beautiful location that is great for walking. Do take advantage of the free pass to the Langdale complex that has swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and a really nice cafe area + restaurant (cafe and restaurant are not free!). The room was good and the staff were helpful.
While the staff were helpful, my wife and I felt they could work harder to be warm, friendly and hospitable. It was as if they had no time to be 'human' with the guests so that we could feel at ease and welcome. But they weren't at all rude, and always responded to questions we had. Also, several times we range the bell at reception and no one came after a good few minutes so we just went into the office and got the room key for ourselves! Not a major problem, just slightly annoying!
Enjoyed the food, nice atmosphere. Staff were generally helpful.
Beautiful room with the best view in the world so I forgave not having a bath which would have been nice after losing our way on our walk.
A late decision for a trip to the lakes landed us at this unusually located hotel which were still one of the few offering good reviews at a decent rate. But boy was this a gem of a find. The location is not too central but an easy drive from Ambleside and 30 minutes to Windermere. Your own car is obviously a must. Many stay here it seems for the walks close by. Make sure it’s still light when you first arrive in order to find your way as the roads can be narrow as usual. The surrounding views are simply amazing, nestled in the mountains. This is a classic country retreat with a nice spacious garden, plenty of lounging areas, sizable pub and a classic dining room. Food options are plentiful for both bar dining and formal in the restaurant. We ate in the restaurant the first night and the food and service were fantastic at a reasonable price. Breakfast was included and equally good and the hot full breakfast options were cooked to order. The mansion was old but interior definitely wasn’t. Our room was in the annex and perfectly maintained. The room was small but very new and clean. Interestingly the bathroom was almost as big as the room and immaculate. You can expect good toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, dresser, LCD TV, bathrobes, hair drier. We had no safe or ironing facilities in room. Overall a very fine stay and a brilliant way to experience a British country retreat. Surpassed my expectations and highly recommended.
The Wifi was free but spotty and slow, however definitely usable. This shouldn’t be a priority if you are staying in the lakes. I guess the location plays a role in that. This was important as there is obviously no cell signal in the area. Our bed was very very soft and while some finds this great others have real problem with soft beds. I didn’t particularly like the softness, also as a couple when 1 moves around the other definitely feels it. It feels like the springs were not very supportive. Other things to note, breakfast is early from 8 to 9:30am, but this is really to cater to those that stay here who are mostly trampers. Check out is also early at 10:30am.
Friendly, welcoming staff. A traditional feel, with breakfast served (not a buffet!)
Great location, perfect for a rest and as a base for walking. Food and drink in the bar just what's needed.
The wifi internet connection seened really slow and was variable in different parts of the hotel.
Beautiful views, comfortable room, but rather expensive for what you get.
Asked for early breakfast and was told it was ok to go down early. Sat by window since restaurant was empty, but was then told to move as it was laid up for two people! Well really- after paying over £100 for the room and not arriving until after dark the night before, I did think it was a bit mean to deny my the view while I munched on my toast for 15 minutes. I had to sit in a dark corner with no view, in an empty restaurant! I ask you!
Room a little too warm at night
