A 500 year-old coaching house, steeped in history, located in the heart of Colchester, England's oldest recorded town. Please note the hotel does not have an elevator or any rooms on the first floor.
Score from 620 reviews Good
Surrounded by pretty manicured woodland and tranquil lakes, this 18th-century house is next to the University of Essex campus.
Score from 412 reviews Wonderful
Just half a mile from Colchester Train Station and the heart of the center of town, the hotel offers affordable, spacious, comfortable and modern rooms with private bathrooms, and free parking.
Score from 129 reviews Very good
Occupying a 14th-century traveler's inn, the award-winning Best Western Rose and Crown Hotel is just a 15 minute walk from the center of historic Colchester.
Score from 292 reviews Good
No elevator and narrow staircase, but staff willing to help with luggage.
Nice place overall.
The housekeeping staff was extremely noisy from fairly early in the morning. I actually asked one of the housekeepers to see if they could keep the noise down. That didn't help. They were slamming doors talking loudly to one another and generally noisy. We have been up late the night before and really want to sleep in but that wasn't an option.
The location was good in central Colchester. The rooms are dated but the beds were comfortable. The staff was excellent – very helpful. The breakfast was also excellent. It was served sit down with tableservice. The food was excellent.
We most liked the breakfast and the hotel room was very comfortable
Tasteful decor and a luxurious room. Staff very friendly and attentive. Definitely will re-visit.
Service and staff excellent!
The only tiny thumbs down would be size of room. However due to it being an old building in the centre of town, this is understandable, they made the most of the space they had and everything else made up for it!
Superb breakfast with plenty of choice!
Early check out time for a Sunday!!!!
very well appointed rooms helpful staff lovely food
Breakfast delicious. Booked a double room and got a kingsize bed.
Paid for breakfasts; didn't get any. Have complained.
There was a party the night I stayed so my room was upgraded.
Second night of stay was a nightmare due to noisy couple in room above. Could hear them dropping things on the floor, walking, talking when they came in at 2.30am and then had to listen to very loud and enthusiastic lovemaking, loud bedsprings until we put on tv to drown out noise. Then disturbed by motorbike or noisy car starting up outside our bedroom window, we were on ground floor, at around 4.30am.
Room was attractive although old and scruffy throws and cushions on bed let it down. Bed was super comfortable and shower was really great.
The room had a couple of housekeeping problems - a broken shower tray, a plug with no chain attached and paint peeling on the window frames. Generally the room was of a high standard though - lovely comfy bed.
The hotel is central and has a nice bar/restaurant downstairs. The breakfast was of very high quality with plenty of choice and they made accommodations for my vegetarian friend.
It would have been better if the check out time was later than 11am , We felt rushed
There is a bus lane on the opposite side of the road to the hotel & if you don't know the area you are very likely to get caught! Maybe worth a mention on hotel website
Location, friendly staff, good food
Friendly staff. Good breakfast but did not eat in the restaurant.
As a regular visitor to the town it's great to have now found a hotel right in the middle of Colchester where everything about it is clean and well thought out and everything in the room actually WORKS!!.Ok maybe I was just unlucky before but on 2 previous stays at other places in town I had to ask for changes of room (a) loo didn't flush , next place (b) radiator just about to fall of wall.... Also great to be able to take full breakfast as late as 10.00..would try book her again for next stay for sure !
Location and comfort
Internet router needed resetting a couple of times, so internet went down.
Staff very helpful and friendly - allowed early and late checkout and looked after bags. Central location. Heating in room easily controlled.
We were upgraded for free to a king size room, room was clean and very nice. Really enjoyed our stay and we didn't have to travel far for a night out. Would highly recommend.
No outside facilities for smokers
Apparently the rooms are newly refurbished but the quality just wasn't there. MDF furniture, stark/characterless bathroom, thin/flat duvet, small TV. Felt a little like a hostel. We had mould all over our bathroom and shower cubicle, the radiator in the bathroom didn't work and a broken shower rail. Staff were helpful when we complained but I've stayed in far nicer quality hotels for the almost £100 price tag.
Location was perfect, staff friendly and lovey breakfast. The restaurant downstairs looks lovely although we didn't eat there in the evening.
The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was beautiful, warm and lean. The location was great for us and breakfast was delicious. Couldn't have asked for more!
Lack of free parking, but good rate with nearby NCP
Room was excellent and good value
