In Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons, The Bear dates back to 1432. Expect a welcoming atmosphere, old world charm and good food. Awarded Inn of the Year 2010 by the Good Pub Guide.
Score from 264 reviews Fabulous
The oldest hotel in Wales, this charming country house has a tranquil location, set in the Brecon Beacons with riverside and mountain views. There is free WiFi and free parking.
Score from 260 reviews Very good
Friendly and attentive. Relaxing atmosphere.
Nothing negative to say
This is a quality establishment, the proprietors and all the staff were very friendly, the inn is only a couple of hunred yards from the shops, cafés and pubs. It has a very cosy feel with beamed ceilings and a roaring fire.
the staff the breakfast
bedroom was dreary and the bathroom, particularly needed updating. Bathroom dirty, bedroom carpet dirty, also dusty. Too small a room for all that dark red - depressing!
Character of building. Comfort and space in the Cromwell Suite. Excellent, friendly staff. Good restaurant. Cosy atmosphere.
There was nothing significant not to like! Wifi reception was poor in our room and shower was a bit feeble but these are minor issues in the context of staying in a lovely old building.
'Have stayed here before and like very much the cosy atmosphere of an old Inn steeped in history. The staff are really pleasant and the food is good. On site parking is very convenient and getting to the town centre on foot is very pleasant.
No negatives. I knew already what to expect hence this return visit.
Evening meal, service, quality were excellent
Disappointing breakfast for me, slow service, muddle with order and burnt toast! Husband loved his breakfast!!
Friendly staff and nice menu
Staff were very welcoming and helpful.
It would have been nice to know that we were going to be in an annexe and not in the main hotel. Room very dark and horrible wallpaper. Food good but not exceptional. Very overpriced.
Loved the inn, felt comfortable, the little snug was good and the breakfasts were very tasty.
The breakfast is excellent (winter fruit compote and scrambled egg are both very special) and I am not surprised it has received AA Rosettes and mention in Michelin Guide several times. The dinner is also excellent - this is a good pub for quality food. Try the starter 'Antipasto for Two' - its almost a meal in itself and brilliantly presented.Staff very friendly and helpful. Nice atmosphere.
I think it is a little expensive relative to B&Bs at £55 for a single room. However, I realise the food is very good relative to some other accommodation in Hay.
The location and the friendly and helpful staff
the dark uncomfortable room
We loved the old black lion , the restaurant area is really cosy and its a lovely place to eat, the staff very welcoming and we would definitely recommend this as a place to stay in hay on wye that is also really convenient for the centre.
Would have liked more vegetarian options on menu.
Friendly helpful staff. Comfortable albeit small room. Handy to explore Hay on Wye. Lovely breakfast and dinner. Free car park.
restaurant service and food
room smelt a bit funny, in annex in old creaky building - no sleep once people in room above started using bathroom and going for walks (as far as I could tell) from 6am given location, car park insufficient for need
Had room 6 The Cromwell Suite which looked great with its own balcony seating area in the room.
Dusty, could have been cleaner, shower cramped and low pressure. At 11.35pm had to complain about piano playing and singing from lounge below our room.
Super friendly staff, nice room and great breakfast. Would definitely stay again.
Fabulous food. Very warm welcome. Outstanding service. Beautiful location. We will be back!
Location and lovely breakfast
Little bit on expensive side for evening meals. But excellent food non the less
Good stay at the hotel, room comfortable and clean, breakfast good
Good breakfast in a pleasant dinning room.
Location was a little way off the main road.
Most of it
Pleasant stay, the stairs are a little tricky, but worth climbing as rooms are clean and comfortable. Top quality food and helpful staff.
Being out in the coach house - dated and not very comfortable. Noise from the garage next door. Staff were a bit unfriendly. No one explained the facilities - we only found out there was a lounge on the last day. Food we wanted had run out at lunch time.
Food, the breakfast was excellent The room was thoroughly cleaned everyday
Checking in at the bar on a weekend night A little on the expensive side
Food, service, friendliness, breakfast
Uncomfortable bed, hard pillows, flaking paint in bathroom, sash window not sliding properly
