In the small village of Great Clifton, on the west coast of the Cumbrian Lake District, this charming inn was converted from a 17th-century farmstead and offers comfortable, characteristic accommodation.
The Old Ginn House has a cosy lounge where you can relax with comfy sofas and chairs, television and a choice of books and magazines. For the warmer months, there is a patio in the courtyard.
Meals are served in the Mediterranean-style dining areas, while the Ginn Room offers a well-stocked bar.
The Old Ginn House provides an ideal base for business guests, or for those visiting the unspoilt Western Lake District and the Solway Coast.

Dinner is served from 18:00 until 21:30.
The main feature bar, the Ginn Room, was part of the original farm where horses would have walked around turning the grindstone to crush the crops - known as 'ginning'. Today, this room offers a comfortable seating area and a bar with a varied choice of beers, wines, spirits, liqueurs and soft drinks.
The bar will close between 22:30 and 00:00 each evening, depending on demand.
The bedrooms are located across the courtyard from the main bar and dining areas.
Easily accessible by car, The Old Ginn House is situated just off the A66, 5 miles west of Cockermouth.
Immersed within an area of natural beauty, during your stay you can enjoy a number of country pursuits, including walking, cycling, golf (there are a number of courses nearby), fishing or tour the beautiful Western Lake District - Bassenthwaite, Skiddaw, Buttermere, Crummock, Loweswater, Ennerdale, Wastwater are all within 20-30 minutes' drive.
The market town of Cockermouth (the birth place of William Wordsworth), the attractive port towns of Maryport and Whitehaven, and the historic town of Workington are just a few minutes' drive away.
By Car:
From the North:
- Take the M6.
- Exit at junction 44, heading west through Carlisle onto the A595.
- Continue for approximately 25 miles.
- Bypass Cockermouth and join the A66 heading towards Workington.
- Approximately 5 miles west of Cockermouth you will come to a roundabout where the A66 meets the A595; turn right, signposted Great Clifton.
- The Old Ginn House is well signed and sits alongside the road running through the village.
From the South:
- Take the M6.
- Exit at junction 40 (Penrith).
- Join the A66 West for Keswick, Cockermouth and Workington.
- Stay on the A66 bypassing Keswick and Cockermouth.
- Approximately 5 miles west of Cockermouth you will come to a roundabout where the A66 meets the A595; turn right, signposted Great Clifton.
- The Old Ginn House is well signed and sits alongside the road running through the village.
Children can only stay for free when sharing a room with 2 adults.
If you intend to arrive later than 22:00 please contact the hotel prior to arrival to make arrangements.
