This charming 17th century coaching inn is a 3-star hotel with many original details. The staff offer the best in friendly, professional service at Gaskell Arms Hotel & Restaurant.
Score from 99 reviews Very good
In a 16th-century building, the Lion & Pheasant Hotel features a traditional restaurant and stylish rooms with free Wi-Fi. The hotel is situated on Wyle Cop, in Shrewsbury’s historical centre.

A 2-minute drive from the medieval town of Much Wenlock, The Plume of Feathers in Harley offers bed and breakfast in the Shropshire Hills.
Score from 122 reviews Very good
The food was excellent - although perhaps not to everyone's taste. Definitely quality more than quantity, although this was mitigated by extra chef's tasters included.
Hospitality excellent - staff attentive and friendly nothing too much trouble. Their attitude was the strength of the Hotel. Food excellent and beautifully presented on the plate and the table was inviting and high standard.
The shower over the bath, this made it impossible for me to use. The chairs in the room needed recovering giving a scruffy impression and the drinks table needed to be more accessible. More information about the switches for the lights in Room 3 would be helpful together with a warning that the hot tap in the sink is boisterous.
Comfortable attractive room, very reasonably priced. Breakfast good.
Weekend dining is limited to a rather ambitious and fairly pricey 'fine dining' style menu. As walkers we would have preferred the choice of eating heartier food in the bar.
location, size of room, breakfast.
staff attitude , toilet was broken , radiator was not working no suitable alternative was provide
We asked for a reasonably soft bed, but it was ultra-hard. No foam topper available.
Lovely old fashioned hospitality in a gorgeous village in rural Shropshire.
General ambiance and excellent food and wine. Good rooms.
Poor wi-fi. Not the best coffee.
Staff Position of hotel Breakfast Dining room
Room was very small for the money Bed small Tasting menu was good but I went up to my room and had coffee and biscuits as I was hungry. I think a warning is needed that the portions are very small. I would have had the normal menu if I had been warned.
The staff the Raven were kind and competent nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The food was just excellent and well presented.
The bathroom though functional needed a bit of TLC
Received a very good and personal service , lovely hotel .
Great room good food
nothing to dislike
The dinner was excellent.
Everything seemed a bit run down, particularly our bathroom. The foot of the bed was higher than the head. This was partly because an oversized duvet had been tucked under the mattress. Removing it did not completely cure the problem. Whoever prepared the room should have looked at it and thought 'That is not good enough'. The 'garden' that one passed through to get to the room was very untidy with spurious items left around. Although wifi was available, we were not offered a code for it.
Waitress ironing the table clothes ready for breakfast. Lovely room no 4
friendly helpful staff. efficient service. great quality food, exceptionally well presented and cooked. Fairly priced wines. Comfortable beds.
Noise from road No air conditioning, portion sizes, on the small side.
Everything was great -- dining in with such good food on offer was a bonus. Lovely area with plenty to do.
Nothing to dislike
Note that on checking in you are not automatically booked in the restaurant, and you are not notified of this. That means you can enter the bar for a preprandial drink and then find out that there is no place for you in the restaurant. This is a restaurant with a known chef so that can be a real dissapointment, apart from having to look for a restaurant somewhere else. Furthermore the breakfast is very simple and not up to the standard of such a hotel.
Beautiful Olde Worlde Village. Helpful staff - amazing food. Flexible with times for breakfast
WiFi signal poor. Could benefit from a dedicated bar area as opposed to a 'Holding area' for those waiting to eat.
We travelled there for a wedding and asked if we would be able too book in at 12 noon to enable us to change ready for the wedding, they kindly accomadated our request.
When we booked I was sure I booked two double rooms, however, upon our arrival was told that we had booked two singles and that would incur an additional cost. As you would imagine we were in no position to argue. We were given a double and single room so all worked out eventually. As my daughter paid the balance I am not sure whether there was an additional charge.
Very pleasant setting and presentation of hotel with some excellent cooking (dinner). Younger staff very pleasant and helpful. It is the best of the hotels in Much Wenlock - we have stayed in two others.
Delays and variable quality of the breakfast- overcooked poached eggs, supermarket thin sliced toast, bottled fruit juice, weak coffee. Attitude of some staff- cool and veering on patronising.
The village is charming, the Raven is also charming. The staff and owner are all lovely. The service in the restaurants was also good - all in all a very pleasant stay and would definitely stay there again if in the area.
The menu is a wee bit fussy and a better choice/offer of more simple food would be an advantage. Shower controls in our room were a bit hit and miss - likely to get scalded or doused in freezing water whilst trying to adjust taps.
quite location very relaxing friendly people
room was cold wifi connection very poor
Good location. Light and airy hotel. Very fair bar prices for a hotel.
Felt that the room (eg the bathroom) did not match the price. Wi-Fi didn't work in the building we were in. Breakfast was adequately sized but didn't appear top quality ingredients. A LOT of noise from the kitchen staff during breakfast.
Great welcome, great food & drink, comfortable room, hot shower!
The only negative I can think of is a suggestion that they put a bottle of water in the rooms, as tap water took ages to come through cold.
We received a warm welcome and the room was excellent ,bed comfortable and TV larger than we normally find in hotel rooms. Bathroom spacious and well equipped. Bar and restaurant warm and friendly. all staff a delight to talk with and very helpful. .
Having to leave for home.
Pleasant helpful staff. Good sized room with seating Clock radio very much appreciated. Cups and saucers, in rooms. Teapot for tea good table linen and crockery. Able to choose an Early Breakfast. The roaring fire made the Breakfast room very cheerful on a grey November morning.
A bit overwhelmed by the rich red all over wall paper but it did make the room warm and cosy.
