Poorly maintained English Plumbing.
Absolutely fantastic in every way. A must for those that like the old world charms.
Lovely very helpful staff (owners) of castle. Nice house, different rooms. Clean and cosy. Very good breakfast.
From the moment I got out of my car Jude came out to greet me and the welcome was only the start. The room was lovely the caring rapport was genuine and she gave me some magazines for my room. I got instructions to my destinations plus bus timetables / price and where to go. Breakfast was excellent. The peaceful room was all wonderful for a good restful sleep. I will stay there every time I have work in this area as loved my stay. I look forward to returning.
No negatives to report
Jude was good host polite very inviting made you feel home and she does good breakfast it's bueatiful inside and the rooms are lovely
I have no complaints
Stayed at The Retreat Castle to attend a wedding at nearby Dalhousie Castle. Could not have been better, beautiful rooms, great location, and the cooked breakfast was awesome. The host went out of her way to make me feel welcome and accommodate my needs - 10/10 would not hesitate to recommend and would stay again in the future.
Everything! Staff wonderful. Building amazing inside and out. Better than any 'chain' hotel. Food wonderful also. A must.
Very friendly fantastic breakfast brilliant room
Very friendly and helpful owners and good location for us to visit family and Edinburgh. I left my necklace when we left and the owner contacted me and posted it on to me which was very thoughtful. We would be happy to stay here again.
We are not early risers so a later breakfast time would have suited us better. The bathroom door does not shut properly and we did forget to mention this to the owners as this could put people off.
The most delightful and personal approach I've ever experienced. My partner travels with work alot and could not stop raving about the retreat. Nothing was too much of an ask and Jude went above and beyond to ensure we had a lovely stay. Rooms were lovely, pillows the best I've ever slept on and the service was incredible!
That we had to return home!
It was a lovely place to stay, Jude was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend The Castle Retreat.
Jude was always happy to help and nothing was too much trouble whether it was needing wine glasses or information about florists. The room was lovely and comfortable and breakfast was delicious
Gorgeous hotel. Amazing room. Delicious breakfast.
Many thanks to Judith and her family. Everything was perfect. The house is very unusual, cute and we want to go back there!
Excellent stay. Helpful and friendly host, Accommodating yet relaxed service. Comfortable house and room, with character.
Small friendly reasonably priced B&B just outside Edinburgh - ideal for a short break. Try GIGI's restaurant in Bonnyrigg for a good Italian meal - but book or be disappointed. We hadn't used a bus for more years than we can remember but it was the best choice of travel into Edinburgh - all at a very reasonable cost.
We were looking for a B&B on the outskirts of Edinburgh and The Retreat fitted the bill to a T. It was a great comfortable stay, great breakfast and an easy bus ride in & out of Edinburgh without having to brave the traffic. There was a short drive to a great pub meal but no big problem.
The owner was fabulous, due to a cancelled flight we missed an appointment the day of our arrival. Before we had even checked in Jude started making phone calls for us to help us reschedule our appointment. We stayed in the turret room, it was absolutely charming. The turret was a great place to read a bit before going to sleep. The bathroom was lovely, the tub was deep & long enough to really relax in, the shower was like showering in warm rain. As Americans starting our trip is was great to be right on the bus line into Edinburgh and we could leave the rental car in the castle parking lot.
My siblings and teenage children stayed at the Retreat Castle a few days after we did. Apparently my son was a little too tall for the bed (he is 6'4").
Jude was fab, couldn't do enough for us, the room was lovely and quirky we loved it. nice big room good bathroom very clean room and lots of extras juice in room toiletries, if you wanting anything else you just had to ask. the breakfast was the best we have had by far especial because they cater so well for veggies
one thing was the lighting was a little dark, but it wasn't to hide anything the place was spotless
The whole ambiance of the place was great. Totally different from your bulk standard room in a travel motel. I even benefited from a free upgrade to a room with a four poster bed which was great. Jude was a superb host and I was made to feel very welcome.
The fact that I was only staying there for one night on business. Wished it could have been longer but will definitely stay there again when I am next in the area - hopefully for longer!
Jude was fantastic, room was wonderful, breakfast was great, even the coffee was well done which isn't all that common in Scotland in my experience. Wifi was easy and fast.
1030 check out time. 11 or 1130 would be more reasonable.
A truly unique guest house! Room and grounds full to the brim with character, charm and personality. Good home cooked breakfast. Could not have experienced a more friendly service. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay!
No shower gel in bathroom.
This is an old property with a lot of character. The staff were friendly and helpful, a wonderfully comfortable bed and very fast wi-fi.
Being an old property the windows are small and the lighting was very dim leading to a rather dark interior.
Everything. Jude was wonderful, our room was wonderful and our stay was more than wonderful
Nothing. Would stay again and again.
Lovely welcome, and homeliness, nothing was too much trouble. Lovely castle like feel in reception area
