It was a lovely place to stay, Jude was very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend The Castle Retreat.
Gorgeous hotel. Amazing room. Delicious breakfast.
Excellent stay. Helpful and friendly host, Accommodating yet relaxed service. Comfortable house and room, with character.
Small friendly reasonably priced B&B just outside Edinburgh - ideal for a short break. Try GIGI's restaurant in Bonnyrigg for a good Italian meal - but book or be disappointed. We hadn't used a bus for more years than we can remember but it was the best choice of travel into Edinburgh - all at a very reasonable cost.
We were looking for a B&B on the outskirts of Edinburgh and The Retreat fitted the bill to a T. It was a great comfortable stay, great breakfast and an easy bus ride in & out of Edinburgh without having to brave the traffic. There was a short drive to a great pub meal but no big problem.
The owner was fabulous, due to a cancelled flight we missed an appointment the day of our arrival. Before we had even checked in Jude started making phone calls for us to help us reschedule our appointment. We stayed in the turret room, it was absolutely charming. The turret was a great place to read a bit before going to sleep. The bathroom was lovely, the tub was deep & long enough to really relax in, the shower was like showering in warm rain. As Americans starting our trip is was great to be right on the bus line into Edinburgh and we could leave the rental car in the castle parking lot.
My siblings and teenage children stayed at the Retreat Castle a few days after we did. Apparently my son was a little too tall for the bed (he is 6'4").
Jude was fab, couldn't do enough for us, the room was lovely and quirky we loved it. nice big room good bathroom very clean room and lots of extras juice in room toiletries, if you wanting anything else you just had to ask. the breakfast was the best we have had by far especial because they cater so well for veggies
one thing was the lighting was a little dark, but it wasn't to hide anything the place was spotless
The whole ambiance of the place was great. Totally different from your bulk standard room in a travel motel. I even benefited from a free upgrade to a room with a four poster bed which was great. Jude was a superb host and I was made to feel very welcome.
The fact that I was only staying there for one night on business. Wished it could have been longer but will definitely stay there again when I am next in the area - hopefully for longer!
Jude was fantastic, room was wonderful, breakfast was great, even the coffee was well done which isn't all that common in Scotland in my experience. Wifi was easy and fast.
1030 check out time. 11 or 1130 would be more reasonable.
A truly unique guest house! Room and grounds full to the brim with character, charm and personality. Good home cooked breakfast. Could not have experienced a more friendly service. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay!
No shower gel in bathroom.
This is an old property with a lot of character. The staff were friendly and helpful, a wonderfully comfortable bed and very fast wi-fi.
Being an old property the windows are small and the lighting was very dim leading to a rather dark interior.
Everything. Jude was wonderful, our room was wonderful and our stay was more than wonderful
Nothing. Would stay again and again.
Lovely welcome, and homeliness, nothing was too much trouble. Lovely castle like feel in reception area
The owner Jude was very attentive, friendly, and genuinely wanting to make ours and everyone's stay very welcome. Even to the point of allowing our son and girlfriend to join us one morning for their delicious breakfast!! Thank you!
We did arrive, thinking that the bar might be open, but it is no longer a facility, although it wasn't really a problem. Just be aware, and plan ahead. :)
Staff were excellent, very personal & very friendly.
The Retreat is special in every aspect, and the owner's friendliness is a fantastic bonus: just what you need when visiting for the first time! Looking forward to staying there again soon.
Warm, peaceful and comfortable accommodation. Made very welcome by friendly hosts.
Personally would have like the opportunity of evening meal.
The friendly welcome and quirky decoration.
The fire alarm going off just after our arrival
Friendly, energetic host couldn't have been more helpful. Refreshingly different accommodation. An oasis.
Staff were the friendliest and most accommodating we have encountered in our many travels, went out of their way to be helpful and informative, and made our stay amazing. Room was large, comfortable, and in keeping with the building, and its period touches were attractive. Breakfast was superb and plentiful. We would definitely stay here again.
Friendly owners, relaxed atmosphere, good location, great breakfast. Excellent value for money. Would stay there again.
Friendly reception by the proprietrix, who dealt quickly and efficiently with all our requests and comments. The service was excellent, as was the food. Jude went out of her way to ensure our enjoyment.
Warm friendly staff that made us feel at home. Jude introduced us to haggis. Easy access to buses to Edinburgh.
Friendly and quirky owner; great breakfast.
Room was a bit small (possibly as we needed easy access).
Friendliness of the staff
