In the heart of the historic market town of Barnard Castle, The Three Horseshoes Hotel is a 17th century building less than a mile from the River Tees.
Score from 177 reviews Superb
The 17th-century Old Well Inn is in the town of Barnard Castle, with a traditional cosy bar and spacious en suite rooms that each have a TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

Located on the outskirts of Barnard Castle, this former working farm is in peaceful rural Teesdale.
Score from 47 reviews Fabulous
Wonderfully comfortable and well-equipped bedroom and bathroom, even with welcome 'treats' for the dogs. A warm welcome from the staff after a long hard drive, and excellent food. This is the best stopover we have ever made on our way up to Scotland. Must stay longer next time.
The location- so quiet and so calm. Lovely old building- quirky- bar with a coal fire. Excellent food. Cosy and warm room. Nice to have two easy chairs. Free wifi worked well.
Food and drinks rather pricey we thought. Bed too soft for my husband.
Ambience, great food & friendly & helpful staff. Well-stocked bar & attention to detail.
Nothing to dislike. Would like more veggie options.
Fantastic food and quite atmosphere in a pretty village
Warm welcome, friendly staff who go out of their way to help. Great food too!
Staff very friendly. Rooms very clean. Food excellent.
Lovely location in a small, picturesque village - very comfortable, well equipped room (and nice and warm!) Attentive and very friendly staff. Good food. Very good breakfasts.
Staff very helpful Good food Excellent beer
Beautiful building, excellent parking, quality bed linen and furnishings. Lovely bathroom with underfloor heating (room 9) Fab choice for breakfast, We chose this hotel as a stopover to attend a wedding on Barnard Castle.Lots of nice little touches in the roomsand we were quite impressed with it over all.
We stayed out past 12 both nights and couldn't get back in (we were told the doors locked at 11ish) We had to ring the number on the door and the second time had to wait 15 mins to be let in...bit of a pain when it was raining. The underfloor heating made the room really warm, which would be great in the winter but when we went it was really warm. Dinner Menu was a bit OTT so we took a cab into town and ate at Valentines which was lovely. Think we should have checked the location a bit more carefully before booking, felt a bit isolated so couldn't walk to another pub etc...Having said that, it'd be perfect if you want a bit of peace and quiet or shooting! Staff were nice bit not really chirpy. They did order taxis for us so thanks for that. Mobile reception is ok as long as you leave the hotel (EE)
Friendly and relaxed welcome. Rooms very comfortable. Food and real ale excellent. I also liked the way I was asked where I would like to be seated for my meal. Sometimes when travelling alone staff don't bother about this.
Very comfortable Clever decoration Charming, friendly staff Exemplary guest information: informal in tone and exceptionally informative
The staff are professional and respectful, the food is really nice and the beer of good quality. The rooms are furnished in high quality materials ensuring a good nights sleep.
I would like to see the price reduced a little.
Breakfast and Dinner Friendliness of staff Location
Room was small and too hot at night. Air-con was provided, but very noisy, so didn't sleep much either way. Apparently they are doing something about it in the close season.
Location Friendly staff Comfortable beds Dinner 1st. night Lovely restaurant
Ground floor bed rooms are not our 1st.choice
Free upgrade to one of the spacious, comfortable Coach Houses. Hotel is situated in a quiet, lovely pennine village with nice walks nearby. Food generally good, wide range of choices at breakfast with a good 'full english'.
Only minor niggles, eg. a couple of items of our evening meals were over or under cooked
Room spotless and comfortable. Food excellent. Staff efficient and friendly. One of the best hotels we have stayed in.
Lack of background music in the bar . Leaving.
Location...easy access to beautiful countryside in all directions and near to historic sites and traditional town shopping. Welcomed with cheery greetings every day by all staff. Good wine good food good beer and comfy bed...what more could you want.
Athmosfere, location actual building
Departure: too businesslike, no personal touches like questions about if we enjoyed our stay (we stayed there for 5 days) etc. Just 'pay and leave'. They could do better there.
This hotel did everything well
The quirkiness of the suit (15) and the friendliness of the staff. I also really enjoyed the breakfasts.The. Food generally was very good and drinks reasonably priced. I would go again.
Although, I realise, it is now spring the room was not very warm and it seemed that the central heating was turned off. There was an electric heater in the suit which I used late afternoon/ early evening.
This was our 5th visit and as usual, everything was perfect except the weather!
Friendly staff, excellent location, very comfortable - no hesitation, we will return!
staff very helpful could not do enough for us good feel to the hotel it is our third visit and certainly would go again if price was right
Very nice breakfasts and lunchtime sandwich but unfortunately we didn't get the chance to sample the evening menu due to commitments elsewhere.
Bit quiet in the restaurant and could overhear others conversations therefore
