We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the royal hotel. The staff were friendly, helpful and very efficient. Food was excellent and hotel and location were charming. We will definitely be back!
View and garden. Very friendly staff.
The grand piano that played itself and the very mean full-English breakfast. A half of everything!! Portion control at its worst. I'm sure we could of asked for more but shouldn't have to.
Food and an excellent wine list. Do reserve parking.
Decor - would have liked to know more about all the pictures: paintings, engravings & period (Edwardian & Art Deco) B&W photographs
Stairs (neither of us being very mobile) and lift also involving stairs
Food excellent Staff all very friendly and helpful
Room and bathroom very basic. No Bath robes provided for what was an expensive room rate
Excellent food. Comfortable bed. Grateful my room was changed on request. Enough parking!
Why supplement for the fish at breakfast? A pity because it was very good. I do like my own pot or cafetiere of coffee at breakfast, as I like more than two tepid cups.
Old world imperial charm with a modern luxury take in scenic location. Restaurant Dining amazing. Staff friendly and delighted to help.
The friendly atmosphere which we noti ced on arrival with friendly staff ready to assist us our rooms-we had to change after 4 days due to an oversight by the hotel management- were excellent and the changeover caused us no problems-our luggage was transferred during the day while we were out.The gardens were most attractive and our second room overlooked the "Quiet" garden. We were allocated a parking space near the hotel entrance for which we were very grateful.
As already mentioned, we were allotocated a parking space which was as a result of mentioning my wife's rheumatoid arthritis when the hotel telephoned to advise us of the change of rooms. If that phone call had not taken place we may have had to park across the road or behind the hotel which would have meant walking some distance to the hotel entrance.other guests mentioned the difficuly they had finding suitable parking places.A nearer extra car park would solve the problem.
The pool was small but lovely situation Sun loungers provided Good breakfast
small twin beds some things didn't work i.e. stuck shower temperature control very expensive
Staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. They also had a great sense of humour, even first thing in the morning or late at night. Food was first class with much emphasis put on use of local seasonal produce. Some of the courses were truly insperstional!! Our pianist was remarkable and a totally unexpected bonus. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable stay.
Location, quality of food, quality of service
Cost of stay was quite expensive
Location Food Staff
Last night noisy people above our room
Location Public rooms Dinner
The room. The carpet was dirty and the furniture was too big for the room , making it feel cramped. There was no safe in the room and no mini bar, something I have come across even in 3 star hotels. We were sitting outside hoping to order afternoon tea, it was impossible to attract the attention of the waiters, even after we said where we were, nobody came to take our order. At breakfast we were met by the waiter who the first thing that said was ' We are very busy this morning, as you can see.' We had to wait for our breakfasts well after other 3 couples that had ordered after us.
Staff were very helpful and friendly and the food at evening meals was very good. The location on the cliff top above Ventnor is excellent.
I have known this hotel by reputation for many years, but having chosen it for the first holiday with my new partner I was left feeling very disappointed. Given that I paid £245 per night B&B I know that I could have had much better for much less money. The hotel is looking quite shabby in places with drab decor. Our room was only adequate, the twin beds very small and with minor maintenance issues (toilet seat not fitted properly, shower difficult to control, etc). Whilst the evening meal was good, breakfast was not. Cooked food was to order, which was good, although portions were small. The remaining buffet was meagre, and could have been easily bettered at a Premier Inn! Car parking was quite difficult, with the front of the hotel, which should have been kept for checking in, luggage, etc, blocked with parked cars in apparently reserved spaces obstructing the entry and exit. The overflow car park was invariably full, leaving the upper car park up a steep set of steps, which was difficult to navigate due to the markings. To sum up, I was disappointed, and would have expected much more for the price paid, and the past reputation of the hotel as 'the best on the iow'.
Reception staff were friendly and helpful on our arrival. Front grounds of hotel are pleasant with nice areas to sit and an outdoor heated pool. There is a nice walk up hill opposite the hotel were you can sit and take in the great view.
Unfortunately the room we were first shown to and the second we had to stay in both did not fit the description or the photographs on booking.com. To get the best rooms pay more and get a garden view. Bathroom needed modenisation and room it'self was tired boring and more in line with a cheaper hotel. Sitting people so close at breakfast when in couples is not ideal or relaxing, it was noted that some people have well behaved children who don't run around at breakfast and others think if they are in a hotel they and there children can be as rude and annoying as is at all possible!!! Not hotels fault but in corridors screaming doors banging. Wish hotels that allowed dogs had outside kennels as also find listening to the next doors dog whining at 10pm because they are at dinner was not good.
poor cooked food staff do not listen to your request
No music-it was quiet and relaxing Excellent shower Very good menu Excellent service Beautiful gardens
A bit out of town
The Isle of Wight is lovely. The hotel is in a charming town, a great location with one of the nicest spots for s sundowner you'll ever find. Superb 3 course dinner at a reasonable price, great comfy room, generous breakfast.
Excellent location, near beach and Ventnor seafront High standard of cleanliness Very helpful staff
Small details not commensurate with price of rooms including stained carpet, toilet roll holder loose, one of the side lamps uneven. Lack of consistency in quality of food. On one evening the evening meal was poor - cold and over salted, on the other evening the food was excellent.
We loved this hotel, a real gem! The hotel, location, staff and food were top notch! We would recommend to people of all ages. Thank you for a lovely visit Richard,Cate and the doggies
There was nothing we didn't like
I liked the location, very close to the seaside, in a quiet area, a lot outdoor space, nice tiny pool, swing for children. The staff was very kind, we had a spacious room on the back and it was pleasant, quite and relaxing. The communal area are really good.
There is no wi-fi in any room, but only in the communal area. They have no bar in the room. I was absolutely disappointed by the dinner (starter and main) but I loved the dessert. There is no balancing between food (poor) and dessert (excellent). The dinner is really expensive for what you get. The breakfast was slightly disappointing.
Garden, view, location, quality of food, spa
Slightly on the high end of the price table
Don't expect luxury like in Europe. The hotel has seen better days .Inside and outside. Vistitors are mainly elderly English people who come for the traditional setting. But this tradition makes it charming. If you are looking for it. Restaurant was perfect. The meal was was perfect, worthy of a Michelin star.
At check in we had to wait for 10 minutes while receptionist made a Chrismas reservation on the telephone (it was august!). Gave us a Fawlthy Towers feeling. Pool area is very small in an unkept garden.
Quiet peaceful + restful
Gardens and location. Conservatory and veranda area.
Room was very very noisy due to kitchen extractor!
