Needed a hotel close to Newhaven and found Shelleys on line. Was all very nice - friendly staff - very nice dinner, huge breakfast and all in a historic house from the poets' family. Oh and Leffer beer on tap... Good chained off car park close by. Had no time to see Lewes this time due sailing time. Would recommend.
Staff were friendly and room was nice.
340 for two nights with no breakfast was not great. When you pay that much for a room, breakfast should be included .
Room, staff, style, character
Poor breakfast buffet.
The food was wonderful. The room was amazing. The staff were so lovely. We loved The Shelleys.
Friendly staff, was very kind to bring us a jug of fresh milk to our room for our coffee as we did not have Breakfast included in our room rate. Old historic building in the centre of town.
Facilities a bit dated, shower a bit fiddly to get the right temperature. Low end Toiletries for a 4 star hotel.
The old style, it is very nice.
Receptionist (Jackie) was excellent. The best part of the hotel.
The restaurant only had a bar menu in the evening. For a £200 room the quality of breakfast was very average. Little choice of food left at the buffet, what was in the buffet was badly over-cooked because it had been sitting there too long. Breakfast finished at 9.30 which is too early. The restaurant staff also weren't really in the ball.
Evening meal was good however scallops had not been delivered. Lol. and breakfast although only 1 kipper when the menu clearly states Kippers. Lemon for kippers not for gin.
The room. Supposed to be an executive room at £200 for the night inc breakfast. Room was £160.00 paid the extra £40 online for breakfast it was only £14.50 in the hotel. No view, rooms in a hole in the ground at the side of the hotel avoid room 20. Wifi still in the Stone Age a voucher which is only good for the day. Wake up need to check your mail. No chance. No lemons in the bar for GnT's. Odd glasses that had seen better days. Bar is characterless with some beer machine dispensing wife beater plonked in the middle of it. No draught beers. Bar is run down. If it was £50.00 for the night fine. £200 no way. Will not recommend it.
We stayed here for an evening at Glyndebourne. We found the traditional ambience, nice garden and lovely outlook from our room on first floor all very pleasant. Bathroom spacious and staff were very helpful getting us taxis etc. The location right on the High St is excellent for pottering after breakfast and a castle visit is a must. We would probably stay again (with provisos) hopefully next year for G'bourne.
We couldn't get any hot water in the morning and we had to wait a long time (about 30 mins) to get a cup of coffee and even longer to get our breakfast. Staff apologised profusely and explained it was because they had a large party to cope with.
Great location Friendly and very helpful receptionist.
Lugging 2 large cases up & down several sets of stairs and through a labyrinth of corridors to get to our room was a pain in such a pricey hotel.
A first class country town hotel with old fashioned values such as courtesy, efficiency and a willingness to assist the guest at all times. The house and garden have an understated classic luxury and comfort and the food was excellent, as were the wines. A place to return to.
The staff's attitude and helpfulness (particularly the supervisor at breakfast during our stay) Cleanliness and room service Food Parking
No lift Room not as expected from the advertising - although comfortable No easy chairs in the room Quite noisy in the morning with the dustbins Needed decoration and attention
Not a lot !
No Porter to assist on arrival. No offer of a drink (tea would be good) on early arrival and offer to have a bite of lunch in the Garden. I knew I was early.....2.00pm being check-in, I arrived at 12.15. Thread bare carpets everywhere. We had gone for the Opera nearby, came back for a drink to chat after the performance and were served very corked wine.....the following other friends joined us and wanted a Dry Martini Cocktail and was told NO Martini glasses, they won't spend the money - a member of staff told us. I made tea in the morning in the room and because the kettle was faulty scalded my thumb flipping the switch off - reported this and they said they had no replacement and would have it mended !!!! I assume their Stars come from themselves or because they have a kettle in a room, and a trouser press which you have to move the furniture in the room to use! I will never stay their again and recommend other folk don't - if going to the Opera at Glyndbourne go to a good B & B. they will be much better as our friends told us as they were just down the High Street in a lovely room with beautiful furnishings etc.
Staff are friendly and helpful, and the room itself was large though the mattress was not conducive to a good nights sleep.
Breakfast was rather limited with regards the continental option. In fact it was rather poor and I would have expected a lot more considering the price. Also the wifi is a little slow.
Great location, great garden to relax in, very pleasant rooms with a nice "lived in" feel. Alan (front desk) the epitome of good manners, kindness, courtesy and consideration for our needs.
The mature lady on the front desk on saturday evening was apparently channeling Basil Fawlty, had difficulty listening to and grasping a simple request, but very keen to explain several times over which member of the hotels management needed to approve what. The youth who brought tea and toast at breakfast is evidently a stranger to customer service in general and in particular the idea of promptly preparing toast without burning it (twice). Both these "problems" I am sure are easily resolved with appropriate training and perhaps some direct advice on the right way of going about things!
Just love the hotel, the location. Dog friendly.
The breakfast. Service lovely but a bit stressed. Some rooms need a make over.
room was excellent in every way - beds comfortable and room s clean.
Poor selection of wine
Only one poor member of staff to serve the bar and waitress in the restaurant, felt guilty to ask her to do anything.
proximity to Glyndebourne
lack of a fan during torrid heatwave weather
- Friendly staff - Good location with parking - Historic feel
- Kitchen extractor fan below window - 3 out of 4 floor lights not working - Missing tile on bath surround
The welcome from staff and the comfort of the bedroom - and the memories it brought of a hotel which I had visited over 50 years ago on a number of occasions. The garden remains an oasis of peace.
1.The breakfast was disappointing - the menu listed "lightly scrambled eggs with smoked salmon" - in fact the eggs were over rather dry, being over scrambled. 2. The entrance from the car park is somewhat lacking in charm
The room was spacious and the evening meal very good.
The breakfast was a little disappointing for the price.
This was our third visit, with friends for Glyndebourne so we know what to expect and will return. Very comfortable beds and linen, comprehensive continental breakfast although the toast took a while to arrive.
In the middle of the heatwave the room was very airless and hot despite wide open window, a fan would have been a simple solution
Good staff, comfortable room and bed. Dinner very good but wine very overpriced.
See comments re wine (gbp 22 per bottle) over the topby a mile! Serious issue re breakfast. Service appalling toast was available after 25 min wait and main dish eaten. My wife and Ipaid 22 pounds for 2 pieces of toast and cold coffee. Ruined the stay for us and our two guests. Cateriing manageer deserves a kick up the rear end.
Excellent, friendly staff helped found and printed out for us a country walk that perfectly suited our time availability and abilities. Breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent
More storage space for toilet bags and toiletries would have been useful
