LOOKS A LITTLE SHABBY OUTSIDE.
FOOD IN THE RESTAURANT VERY GOOD, ROOM WAS A LITTLE OLD FASHIONED BUT CLEAN.
It's a little rough around the edges, but kind of adds to the charm! Got a little lost on the way to the room!
Very friendly staff, breakfast was amazing, lovely character building.
The breakfast was disappointing from the food point of view, although the service was good. The smoked haddock was dry and not a generous portion, and the poached eggs were rubbery. Expensive price for food which did not live up to the surroundings.
The rooms were spacious, comfortable, beautifully furnished and presented. The concierge was charming and helpful. We had booked one room with twin beds and were shown to a room with a double bed, but this was quickly rectified and we were given two double rooms.
Sadly, the service, food and facilities were all poor. We were shown to a room with dirty linen on the floor. Given another room but charged £30 for the 'upgrade'. Had the disturbance of falling masonry in the wall cavities. Felt like Fawlty Towers!
The location is very good
Despite advertising 24 hour residents bar informed not available at 9pm on Sunday. Wifi password not publicised in the room.
Very good breakfast and large clean room.
A bit pricey especially as breakfast was extra. Didn't like having to ring the door bell to get back into hotel at 10:30.
The location and the old school charm of the place. Received a friendly welcome.
The location and the ability to park and wander around the town. Did not feel to hotel like in fitting.
On arriving in my fiancé's work van due to our car being in the garage! We were stared at for a long time by some lady.. As we got out of the van she said in a condescending manner 'are you staying here?' As if we was stealing a car space! I obviously replied with yes we are!!! And she skulked of inside.. She was a receptionist.. Not an apology or any eye contact on arriving at reception.
Clean and bed was comfy
Only stayed two nights and nothing bad to report at all.
Really friendly staff. Nice location at the end of the High Street with shops, castle and railway station only a few minutes walk away. Plenty of free (for patrons) car parking adjacent to hotel.
The stay at the hotel started badly - our car was scraped by a visitor in the car park who did not leave their details. The response of the receptionist was “I have been here 15 years and this has never happened before" and “we are not liable” – hardly great empathy or customer care. When asked if she could check the CCTV for images of the vehicle her response was “neither the duty manager nor myself know how to use it, we would have to call an Engineer on Monday.” – my response of “what would you do if the police wanted to see it because of a serious assault?”, led to nothing but a confused look. Unsurprisingly two days later we have heard nothing. Despite the tension we decided to go to the room in the hope that it would raise our mood – that was a wrong move. Despite paying a considerable amount for a ‘superior’ room and attempting to ignore the thread-bare landing carpetswe were hugely disappointed Below is a list of the issues - Unfrosted glass in bathroom which faces onto high street – the blind was filthy and did not cover both windows. - Poor lighting in the room - Half of the plug sockets did not work. - No information about local amenities or wifi settings in the room. - The toilet roll in my gym is of a higher quality! - Massive stain on the ceiling due to a leak and plaster coming away. - Noisy heating plumbing - No stationery in the room - An invoice could not be printed as they had run out of printer ink. - Wall fittings were loose. This was the worst hotel I have stayed in since my student days 20 years ago.
Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed and good breakfast.
A really nice place to stay. Good breakfast, comfortable room, and helpful staff. A special mention for Jackie on Reception who is very friendly, most helpful and a real asset to The Shelleys!
The receptionists have always been exceptionally friendly and efficient and the overall ambience as one walks in is most welcoming, especially with the capacious drawing room and today's newspaper on the table
Handles missing off drawers. Radiator valve broken. Light bulb broken in chandelier. No breakfast buffet on 1st day and then very scanty on 2nd. Niggled by the poor attention to detail.
Size and furnishings in bedroom. Staff very friendly and accommodating
Their internet had been down, so they were not aware of our booking when we arrived. We were shown to a room that overlooked the dustbins. Then moved to another (better) room given that we didn't want to change rooms after one night. Second morning breakfast was a real disappointment - due to limited staff, the continental breakfast was not available. This isn't acceptable in a hotel of this quality and price. Generally, the hotel needs some investment e.g. worn carpets on the stairs etc and an update to the bar, and a bit of TLC. The bed could have been more comfortable.
Lovely building and gardens. Central location. Helpful staff. Comfortable room. Plenty of car parking space.
Service at meal times, especially Saturday evening Valentines Dinner, was disorganised and chaotic - pity food was excellent, staff were helpful but no system to serve a number of tables.
Quality building and comfortable rooms and facilities. Old and traditional with space to breath in a tranquil setting. Excellent food provided
The breakfasts were disappointing. As there were so few guests, nothing was on display, so we had little idea of what might have been on offer. The cooked English breakfast was very mediocre and the poached haddock with eggs tasted unpleasant.
This is a charming property with wonderful public rooms and a very comfortable bedroom. We had asked for a comfortable chair in the room and two armchairs were provided. these made all the difference to our visit. We had an excellent 3 course meal on our second evening.
We did not like the fact that breakfast was not included and was £14.50!, luckily there are lots of nice places to go and eat. Also the cleaniness in the bathroom wasn't very good, there was shower gel and the tiled shower wall left from the last guest!
we both like the period feel and the style of the hotel, the best thing was the warthm of the room, that was very welcomed! But the staff were friendly enough and even though the hotel is abit tired looking i quite liked that as it added to the charm.
It was a very windy night & the room window insulation was not good !!
Helpful & friendly staff.
Room was cold and the old iron windows didn't shut properly - though staff did provide us with a heater when asked. The price of the ale in the bar was extortionate - much higher even than central London prices
Staff were fantastic and couldn't have been nicer or more friendly: Food in the restaurant was of a very high standard.
The lovely bedroom Comfortable bed Really helpful staff Very good breakfast
Nice spacious well furnished room and helpful reception
The hairdryer definitely needs to be updated. I can't believe hotels can still have those ancient attached to the wall models with no power to dry your hair!
Pleasant stay, large room
Food in restaurant did not live up to the expectation from the menu. Glasses in bar of poor quality for a G and T
Excellent location, bedroom very comfortable and well appointed and staff all very helpful and friendly
Room 11 has a view of multiple red/orange rubbish bins - not very pretty, rather depressing actually. Could a shed be built for them or some kind of camouflage?!
