Fabulous,

“ Everything from the look of the building when we arrived through to the breakfast we had just before leaving. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and the room was fantastic. The restaurant was a delight and the food was delicious and well priced. All in all we could not fault a single thing. ”

Once an ancient monastery, The Star and Eagle Hotel dates back to the 14th century. It offers charming accommodation in the Kent countryside, 20 minutes’ drive from Royal Tunbridge Wells. Much of the old stonework is still visible throughout the building, and guests can admire the exposed brickwork, wooden beams, and an open log fire while dining in the restaurant. A wide-ranging menu is available, including tapas, seafood and meat, and there are vegetarian options to choose from. Guests can also dine outdoors, with picturesque views of the surrounding Kentish Weald. Rooms at The Star and Eagle have carpeted floors, seating areas and TVs. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building, and free private parking is possible on site. Situated just 3 miles from the A21, the hotel is a 35-minute drive from the historic coastal town of Hastings. Maidstone is just a 25-minute journey by car. Food was good but a little on the expensive side. Staff very accomodating and friendly. Asked why it was so hot in the room and was told people complain if its cold. Guess we are the opposite. Windy night when we stayed the windows rattled all night and it was very hot in the room. Seemed a waste of money the towel rail being on super heat all night so hot it burned when you brushed past it to go to the loo.

Attentive friendly staff, good food, central location for touring in Kent. History and atmosphere. Tales of haunting and smugglers. Our first room during the stay was very low ceilinged and using the shower and sink were especially tricky for a 6ft bloke. But very quaint... Without asking we were put into a larger room when it became available at no extra cost.

Friendly and welcoming staff, food, variety of real ales, innovative menu themes, well supplied bathroom, the old building itself... and a whole lot more! The weather! The cold, miserable weather! In April. Didn't stop us having a great stay though...

Wonderful ancient inn with more oak beams and open fireplaces than you could possibly need, but mind your head! Food, staff, rooms - all excellent, perhaps just a wee bit too expensive, but we had a great time! London prices

Very nice country hotel. Small, but very accurate in details. All made in "wood" but all clean (maybe recently renewed), quite comfortable. Good breakfast. Friendly people and cosy restaurant. It was not easy to find it on night, only the "eagle" sign was visible, and no Hotel or Name lighed. No lift and very sharp stairs (luckily only one froor to "climb")

The breakfast and the lady serving it were impressive. Excellent quality ingredients. The hotel is in an old building with character and was situated in the centre of this lovely Wealden village. The manageress responded to my complaints about 'value for money' very positively. We had the Four poster bedroom which was poor value for money. The bathroom needs an upgrade and some decent lighting. Having stayed at an outstanding hotel in Verona 2 weeks ago, with a whole suite of rooms, for little more money. The contrast was very stark.

The sense of history- the building creaks with age. We had a four-poster bed with good en-suite facilities. The Valentine's Day meal was eminently reasonable in price and extremely well cooked. Service was friendly and efficient. Goudhurst is a fine example of a wealden town and the inn is one of its architectural gems. A ideal choice for a short break. Double glazing might seem incongruous in a building of this age, but it saved our "beauty sleep", as Goudhurst is on a busy road with far too much heavy traffic passing through.

We went there to celebrate our birthdays. We had a great time in a beautiful old pub/guest house-hotel. The staff were friendly & the decor & four poster helped enhance a lovely few days away. The evening meal was a little expensive but there were cheaper options available. 9 out of 10.

For several choices there is no good fit with the s&E. Its main attraction is that it is a historical gem, centrepiece (with the nearby church, within a wonderful village. But I'm biased, as I was born a few yards away and then left in 1968. On this trip perhaps the best feature was the view in the morning across the valley to the south, with stringers of mist therein - I remember that view from my younger days and it's magic! I struggled to get the wifi to work (but I did)
