The Swan At Hay  

They were very short-staffed but the gentleman on duty was excellent and very helpful. The breakfast was good.

The evening meal was awful. When we arrived at 4pm the window in our bedroom was wide open & the room stayed cold all day. The radiator was not sufficient for the room. It was January and snowing!

Location very good.

The room was quite uninspiring. Also no heating when we arrived on a cold january afternoon. Lounge and dining room not great. French bistro theme in a welsh country hotel! Food good but expensive..

Hotel was reasonably priced, rooms very clean, although could do with little refurbishment. Restaurant was very pleasant & food was good.

Got locked out of the hotel on New Years Eve. Arrived back at hotel at 12.05 after enjoying lovely meal in village, followed by drinks in the local pub. Front doors were locked, but assumed someone would open up when we rang the doorbell. After 25 minutes of ringing bell, calling by phone, knocking on windows both front & back of hotel, my husband went into garden by side gate & found a glass side door unlocked - Reception was deserted, so we had to find our own room key. When we complained in the morning, they said they had decided to lock up early because they didn't want the drunken riff raff from the village coming in. When I said ' what about the guests?' They said that they had not expected anyone back so late! I would not class 12.05 as late given that it was New Year's Eve & I cannot believe they would just lock the door without checking that all guests were back. We didn't take our room key out with us, so a simple check would have confirmed that we were still out. We were told that the room key should have had a front door key attached to it but when we looked, it did't - the response to this was that we could have asked for a front door key before going out! My further concerns would be why there is no duty manager on at the hotel during the night - what happens if a guest gets ill ? Although I was thankful to be able to get in & not spend the night in the cold, it does also beg the question of security - if we could get in, so could anyone else ! First time ever I have been locked out of a hotel ! For that reason, if I return to Hay, I would be looking at other places to stay.

Attractive building on outskirts of town with attentive helpful staff

Some fittings in room were old and falling apart. Drawers with bottoms falling out, wardrobe with back fallen out.

Spacious, comfortable, big bed, plenty of seats to relax in, friendly staff, good location

Location and charming village for walking around and visiting book and antique shops

We stayed in a courtyard room which was fine, however I think the mattress was made from straw and was very uncomfortable.

Advertised "Bar" So small only two couples could sit in it although it was very snug, so nowhere to sit early evening and have a drink. Also would have liked a snack - i.e. sandwhich with said drink, chef could not oblige - only full meals served !! so had to go out!!

Good location with easy walk to town shops etc. Comfortable room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Relaxed atmosphere and very good food. Having its own carpark is very useful indeed.

Nothing I didn't like.

5 mins from my music venue (St Mary's Church) excellent breakfast with relaxing view of garden good wi-fi connection to keep abreast of urgent correspondence

It is a very comfortable hotel, the staff are very friendly and efficient and it is perfectly situated for shopping in Hay and walking in the local area.

I came to the swan with my daughter after many years of staying there regularly , quite a while ago.on the surface it looked much the same but was not. I must say I was disappointed I realise everything has to change with time. Also the a la carte restaurant had gone and only the bistro was left the gardens were lovely as they used to be .also noticed the the carpet on one of the stairs had worn.

The place seemed warm but as soon as you went upstairs there was a difference in atmosphere. The bedroom was cold and we used the fan heater a few times I understand you might not put full heating on until october. The dining room also was freezing in the mornings and didnt make one want to linger over breakfast. The shower and bath had no hand rail to help anybody out and the mirror above the washbasin was meant for somebody really tall.the cupboard where the hairdryer was kept the bottom fell out of it and the television control needed new batteries couldnt change a channel very easily.should have asked at the desk for new batteries I suppose..

Roadside room - disturbed by agricultural vehicles through night, but it was harvest time and they need to work at long hours.
