Situated on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, The Fairfax Arms offers 4-star accommodation and a traditional, oak-beamed bar. It has peaceful gardens, and is a 30-minute drive from York.
Score from 124 reviews Wonderful
The friendliness of all the staff, the history and decor of the hotel. The food was excellent and imaginative
Would have preferred a separate shower cubicle as getting in and out of the bath to shower was difficult. Pity the fire was not lit in the lounge on a Sunday afternoon and the lighting in the lounge was not very good for reading.
Service was attentive and very professional.Food was good and very well presented but because of the association with James Martin expected something less 'cheffy' as he would put it himself
There was'nt anything not to like
The hotel was was very tastefully decorated, the room was very clean. . What was really nice I asked for a special message to be in the room and it was done. We were pleased that we rang last minute and said bringing our dog
A member of staff told us while having a drink how staff had been sent home as they were hung over. We did not need to know that. The bowls in the morning were dirty , I had to look through several bowls to find a clean one. Paid for a superior room Photo showed 4 poster bed. did not get one, did question, said I should have rang them. thought misleading. On web site £7.50 for taking the dog Hotel charged us £10. One member of Staff had shirt grey instead of white and un ironed and ripped on the sleeve. Food we had at dinner and coffee only warm. I expected to have tea and coffee in the room or brought to our room complementary.
From our arrival we were made to feel very welcome. The room was excellent and our meal in the restaurant was fantastic. A great hotel which I can't recommend enough
Excellent hotel, very friendly staff and lovely food.
My wife and I discovered the Talbot by accident last year. Although we live a long way away in Dublin, this was our third visit in 14 months. Needless to say, we love it.
Warm and friendly
Poor bar service (no one there even after 5 minutes of waiting yet a guy was in the room playing the piano).
Price of food and some confusion about room.
Public rooms were decorated for Christmas, log fires and a very welcoming atmosphere. The staff were very helpful an friendly. Very near to Castle Howard.
Our meal was a disappointment. We spoke to the Head Chef and he took on board our concerns. The facilities in the Disabled Room were poor - wet room bathroom was not adequate - room flooded if you used the shower and toilet impossible to use without great difficulty.
Nice hotel and we were upgraded to larger room which was very nice . But top floor not good for older people won't rush back
Expected food to be better . Ok if you like game and fish . Not good Yorkshire food like James talks about on his sat morning show . Portions very small . Food let our stay there down .
Good hotel in a handy location for attractions in area. Great dinner and first class breakfast.
Talbot hotel is in a good location Malton is a friendly town with lovely people, some nice places to eat in the area. Hotel is very clean, staff friendly without being intrusive, rooms were lovely and a good size, the breakfast was delicious .
The hotel was extremely warm thoroughout our stay - solved with leaving room windows open during stay
The entire experience of staying at The Talbot is something well worth investigating with good attention to detail, friendly staff and an excellent view of the charming town of Malton. The food (of course), the rooms and the service are all in keeping with the grand surroundings. If you're thinking about it, I'd say go at see for yourself.
The service whilst always welcome, possibly went one step too far as the policy of no tea making facilities in the room was an inconvenience, even if the Talbot's solution is only one call away. I think this is one call you didn't have to make, surely?
The food was glorious, both at dinner and breakfast. Malton is a nice town, location is really close to train station. Comfortable room, spacious and elegant. Nice bath tub.
The staff were fantastic, the food superb - thank you everyone
Nothing, a personal preference we would have liked a simple coffee tray
Comfortable and relaxing. Great food Good room Quality service
The young breakfast waitress who couldn't even crack a smile.....
Special dinner as we had guests
No tea coffee tray in bedroom although it could be ordered free of charge. For a special room we have certainly had better for comparable price.
It was our second stay at The Talbot my husband and I love the atmosphere the relaxing time we have there, The food is excellant with a really good choice of every course Catherine from Halifax
Not much to say ,no problems at all
The hotel and setting were lovely, the staff courteous and very pleasant. The food was fabulous and beautifully presented and reasonably priced for this standard of cuisine. The room was spacious and very comfortable. We have no criticism at all. The only observation (not criticism) was the wine was a little expensive for what was on offer but not excessively so. A really lovely break.
Beautiful rooms and bathrooms, friendly and helpful staff, room service food (steak!) was delicious and breakfast equally as tasty. Lots of gorgeous spaces in the hotel to relax, drink, read a book etc. we will be coming back for our wedding reception! :)
Central location easy to access main roads in any direction. Room was large and comfortable plenty of storage space
Our bedroom appeared to be above the kitchens which you got some noise from until about 10.30. The bed was ok but we didn't have a great night but that could be just us. The floor was uneven so everything slipped off the tables which was a bit irritating
The food was of course very good indeed matched by excellent service
Not having reserved a restaurant table in advance being told at reception on arrival to eat at nearby places. The manager sorted this out but it should not have happened.
Did not realise there would be no lift at this hotel so stairs were a problem. Wedding reception in progress on our arrival so quite noisy.....then in evening people congregated by main entrance smoking and drinking....not the image of the hotel we had expected. Had to find someone and ask for tea in the lounge after our check in....as no facilities in room only room service . Given the option we would have cancelled when we arrived as would our friends from Australia.
Georgian building Village location Interior decor Lovely restaurant Generally good service
Bedroom suffered from loud traffic noise No privacy blind on plain glass bathroom window Repair not dealt with promptly Trainee barstaff struggled with drinks
