Bedford Hotel, hotel in Gunnislake

On the edge of Dartmoor National Park, The Bedford Hotel is located in the town of Tavistock. It offers Wi-Fi, fine dining, and modern rooms with flat-screen TVs.

My room was relatively small but absolutely fine for one person. The bathroom and shower were great except that the shower cubicle really does need a shelf or somewhere to put the supplied shampoo etc. whilst showering.

Rockmount Rooms & Apartment, hotel in Gunnislake

Located in the heart of Dartmoor National Park, Rockmount Rooms & Apartment is only 150 yards from a selection of bars and restaurants.

When we arrived the very happy friendly owner gave us an upgrade to a bigger room as he had a cancellation. So we had the garden room. It was really nice and modern and had illy coffee for the machine! The bed was mega comfortable and there was a sofa and TV for chilling. It was only 200m from the centre of town so we could wander down and stumble back later on. You can also pop out to Dartmoor in 10mins drive. Overall felt very happy and relaxed when we left.

Gunnislake is a sleepy one horse town in the middle of a village, but it does boast both a Post Office and a Pub, Great place to base your stay if like me you like to roam far and wide, we did Flambards on one day and Budd on another, where we had Afternoon scones on the Barge, be careful when visiting you do not walk down the Canal, as it's by the Seafront Side.

The proprietors have little (if any) control over this small concern and I was warned about it. The last 100 metres of road is not sealed and very uneven, ruts in places quite deep. Drivers in cars with low ground clearance should be extra cautious. Otherwise the accommodation was a delightful experience and catered to our every need. Thoroughly recommended.

Gunnislake is away from the intensity one can find in some coastal towns. It is just 25 minutes from wild ponies and stone age ruins of Dartmoor, which to my mind far surpasses nearby Stonehenge for atmosphere and magic (don't forget the ascending larks, grazing sheep, exotic cattle in the road, etc).

Lovely lodge with a fantastic upper balcony overlooking the trees, very peaceful and relaxing. The lodge was perfectly clean and had everything we needed. We had the best Sunday roast in the pub onsite, £9.50 for two courses - it was so good! All staff were really friendly and super helpful.

This is the village I grew up in and has not changed much in the 40 odd years I have been away. It is located on the Cornish side of the picturesque Tamar valley and is ideal for day trips to both Dartmoor and Bodmin moor. Closer to visit is Morwellham quay a must to see and the nearby ancient stannary town of Tavistock which connected Morwellham by canal.

We stayed one night for a wedding in the next village.

We stayed one night for a wedding in the next village. The rooms were clean and comfortable, really comfy beds. Staff very accommodating and the breakfast delicious. The stairway and toilets are a bit dated and could do with a lick of paint and stair carpet cleaned. The price you pay reflects this so if you are looking for something a bit more modern then expect to pay more. Totally fine with us as all we wanted was somewhere cheap to sleep so would actually say it was better than expected.
