Have just returned from a five day stay at the Trout, accompanied by my elderly mother & my daughter who was doing work experience in nearby Winchester. My main reason for booking was that it accepted well behaved dogs, which is nearly impossible or affordable anywhere else! New owner, Julian, couldn't have been more kind; he did everything possible to make our stay pleasurable, including helping us with our luggage & helping my disabled mother use the stairs! Our rooms were comfortable with spotless linen & new beds. Bar meals were very nice & there was plenty of flexibility with choice; we thoroughly enjoyed the candlelight tables in the evening. Julian's saying is that nothing is too much trouble- you only need ask! This also applied to his staff & family who were genuinely friendly & helpful. The Trout is a picturesque old pub in a very pretty setting, due for a renovation in a month's time, I am sure it will be even more cosy shortly. Planning to revisit soon, I'm sure my dog can't wait!

I received a warm welcome from the owner (Julian) and his staff. They were friendly and I felt comfortable sitting in the bar with the locals in the evening and watching the Olympics. The food was very good and there was an imaginative vegetarian selection on offer. The pub and rooms are being re-designed soon and I look forward to visiting again when the work has been done.

The Trout Inn is in a lovely area, we had come off the ferry at Portsmouth and the Trout Inn was only about 45 minutes away which was as far as we wanted to travel after a long day on board the Ferry. The young lady who took us to our room was very pleasant and friendly. Breakfast was quite adequate. There was tea and coffee in the room which was a blessing because we had been in Europe for a couple of weeks where they dont tend to provide you with tea and coffee in the rooms. Looks like a good English Pub from the outside but inside was very shabby. Our room was passable but the bed was very hard and the shower was pathetic with no flow at all. The biggest disappointment though was the evening meal. We were looking forward to some good pub food but were faced with a choice of 2 starters (whitebait was very nice) and then 3 choices of hot meals - one was cod and chips which had been marked as off the menu, the next pasty and chips of which they only had one portion left and the third choice being ham egg and chips. All poorly cooked and unappetising. My husband's pasty had been cooked then re-heated in the micro leaving it soggy and the chips had been refried and were most unpleasant. Even on asking for a standard drink of bottled juice was told that my choice was unavailable. Very disappointing last night to our otherwise fabulous holiday.

I was booked to stay at the Trout Inn, but sadly a mix-up by booking.com meant that when I got there they didn't actually have a room - booking.com charged me for a non-existant room. However, the landlord was very sympathetic and was able to find me alternate accomodation at another nearby pub, and managed to get me a good deal with the other place as well. Very good service!

It was very convenient for getting to Winchester for my meeting. The location was very quiet, which for me is great as I am a light sleeper. I enjoyed the fresh cooked breakfast in the morning. No hair dryer

Obliging staff, comfortable room and facilities The place was run down and the carpets in the public areas were fifthy. However the proprietor explained that he had only taken over management days before and was undertaking a progrmme of rooms and public area maitenance that would improve the hotel

The hotel had just been taken over following a short shut-down due to the previous tenant's rapid departure. We were the first guests of the new management who were having to find furniture and bedding as well as get the kitchen and bar up and running. There was an element of the Dunkirk spirit throughout. If the establishment has the investment of which they were talking it will be a very pleasant country Inn which is in a pleasant location. There was a backlog of redecoration in relation to carpets and paintwork. There were missing light bulbs and an absence of hot water in one of our rooms. I have little doubt that the new management will address these issues quickly. I would thus recommend the Trout Inn once these things have been addressed.

The proprietor, his wife and parents- in- law were very friendly and did their best to make my stay comfortable and to feel welcome. Good simple English country food and excellent cooked English breakfast. Comfortable bed. Picturesque location. The shower was totally inadequate. The stall was tiny. The water was either boiling hot or freezing cold.

On holiday from the usa we wanted to experience a rural british inn. The Trout Inn was just what we wanted. The accomodations were as expected and the food was very good. I had a sirloin steak that was as good as I have gotten in the us. Staff was attentive and interested in what we were doing for our holiday.
