The Unicorn HotelSheep Street, GL54 1HQ Stow on the Wold (Show map) Very good, Score from 178 reviews“The building had a lot of character, the host and staff were very friendly. The bar and food was very good and had a nice atmoshphere. It was also right in the middle of town so we couldd walk from the hotel.”
Christine,
Burntwood
In the heart of the picturesque Cotswolds, The Unicorn Hotel is a 17th-century building with stylish interiors, offering the perfect base from which to explore the beautiful surrounding area. Private rooms are individually designed and have TVs, radios and hairdryers. They also include telephones and tea/coffee making facilities and some have antique furniture and 4-poster beds. Guest can dine in the elegant hotel restaurant, which has a great menu. There is also an informal pub menu that is available in the oak-beamed bar, contemporary restaurant or secluded yard. The Unicorn Hotel has a sitting room with a fireplace, where guests can have afternoon tea. Enjoy a drink in the cozy bar, with its roaring log fire and friendly atmosphere. Naunton Downs, Lyneham and Burford golf courses are all within a 10-minute drive of the hotel. Stratford-Upon-Avon and Cheltenham are both less than a 20-minute drive away. Hotel Rooms: 19

The welcome and service was great. The lovely bar area with log fire was perfect for our new years weekend. The big room was comfy and warm. Great location and all round top place to stay for a visit to the Cotswolds.

When I complained that the tv wasn't working it was fixed later that evening so they responded reasonably well The restaurant. It was a Friday night and I was advised it was better to eat in the bar as there weren't many people booked in and the atmosphere would be better. There was no atmosphere in the bar either and no-one attempted to bring a menu or ask about drinks - they all seemed busy on something unrelated to the bar. The dinner was poor. Breakfast was set up with knife and fork but neither I nor 5 others whilst I was there was ever asked if we wanted anything cooked so I dont think they actually do cooked breakfast despite the knife and fork!

We were expecting a superior room it was small, decor was dated and damp patches on the wall, bedding was horrible woolen blankets which I think are not hygienic and the eiderdown was shabby so we slept with just a sheet over us. The ensuite had a huge cobweb and was not as clean as it should have been again decor tired and dusty and the decor in the reception areas tired

Although the breakfast was laid out there were no bowls or plates out for breakfast on the saturday when we arrived in the restaurant. We waited 20 minutes and still none arrived, consequently we had one croissant and coffee and went elsewhere for breakfast.

The staff were pleasant and the Hotel is in a good location The Hotel was freezing cold,it is no good advertising a Hotel having roaring log fires when in fact it has just one in the bar and it doesn't throw out enough heat to warm even the bar area, just one radiator in the restruant and we were advised to stay in bar as it was so cold , still cold the following morning, breakfast was poor (very little selection) and didn't even open restruant that night as it was too cold so again ate in the bar. On speaking to the Manager about how cold the Hotel was I was surprised to learn that the Owner is very aware of the problem and has been for a long time but it would appear chooses not to rectify the problem we will not return or recomend it to anyone else The owner isn't bothered about the comfort

Perhaps a little tired, but then so many are, particularly in January, but a very warm welcome, clean, comfortable and a very good breakfast with golden yolked free range eggs, perfectly poached and excellent sausages. I would definitely stay there again.

It was comfortable, friendly an excellent location, and olde worlde charm, helpful staff and whoever dealt with the booking took note of dietary requirements. A bell or similar at reception to summon someone would be useful.

We were impressed by the friendly, helpful Staff, the quality of the room and the ambience of the lounges, especially the log fire in the bar area. We could only stay for one night but have promised ourselves a longerreturn visit as soon as possible. Overall - excellent value for money.

Friendly, welcoming staff. Went out of their way to help. Lovely room, furnishings & food. Our Golden Retriever was made so welcome & could join us in the bar for dinner & breakfast. We hope to stay again next year. Bob & Julia Williams & Bentley If awake there was traffic noise as the hotel was on a cross roads, but we would stay again.

The very best things about The Unicorn were it's location and parking facility. If you can't park in the limited roadside spaces immediately outside the Hotel, you can use the private hotel car park directly across the road. I also thoroughly enjoyed the full English breakfast. The hotel is old and quaint and unfortunately, of necessity, has steps up and down all over the place. These are well signposted but anyone who is even slightly infirm may find this difficult.

The staff at the hotel was great and extremely helpful, and the hotel is in a really cool old building from the 1600'S. Stow-on-the-Wold is a great location to stay in if you want to see the Cotswolds, since it's a very central location, and there are many restaurants and shops in the town. The only thing you should know is that the hotel is located next to a main street, so you can hear traffic going by until about 10pm and starting early in the morning. I am not a light sleeper so this didn't bother me at all!
