good customer service, warm
noise from other guests coming in early hours of morning
This is an historic hotel in an historic place centrally placed for seeing the sights and visiting pubs and cafés. Excellent breakfast in a lovely sunny conservatory. Nice leisure club and parking, a must in Lewes.
The old part of the hotel was very quaint and very hot. I appreciated sleeping for the first time in a four poster bed but the mattress was very hard and needed replacing.
The breakfast was first class. A very good selection of cereals, fruit and pastries and the cooked breakfast was excellent.
The entrance to the property car park was very daunting with a large 4x4. The lower car park which we had to use was not lit and was very tight. All this and with the front and rear parking sensors sounding continuously because of both the steep angle of the car park entrance and the lack of space made for a very stressful 1st impression. Once checked in we then had to carry our luggage up two flights of stairs as there was not a lift. We stayed in one of the rooms off the rear car park, not in the main hotel, so can't comment on those. However, the building we were in which, when you can take in to account, is not a listed or protected building, was very very dated, extremely worn and tired.
Location and swimming pool
The old uncomfortable bed and tired look of the hotel
The room I stayed in was clean, comfortable and despite being at the front of the building surprisingly quiet.
The poor signal for the television was annoying but who stays in a hotel to watch TV?
Badly in need of updating. The leisure facility was fairly new but it would have been a better idea to upgrade from the front of hotel where first impressions are more important. It was 56 steps upwards to our bedroom as there was no lift, we had a Parkinson's sufferer in our party and it was exhausting enough for the able bodied.
The ambience of the room, the lovely beams in the ceiling
The swimming pool was very cold, I was told that the boiler had broken down
Helpful staff. Character of the old coaching inn. Location in centre of Lewes.
Cramped condition of bathroom. Creaky corridors.(unavidable I suppose)
Price was reasonable
Although the hotel was clean it desperately needs upgrading
4 Poster bed and the tilting floors. Doors locks need updating - long keys difficult to operate in old locks. Difficult to read a book or paper on the furniture & with the old fashioned lights if bulbs work. If updated I would recommend other travellers.
Loved the beams, old wood doors, big key for the room. Also, very helpful staff and good food.
A tricky drive onto the High Street after the stay, but remember this was a coaching inn and should be as it was, traffic-wise! Really, no problems; it would have been nice to stay longer!
We really enjoyed our swim in the hotel pool - it was both relaxing and refreshing. The food was good and we had a pleasant stroll round Lewes town centre; just step out the door and turn right!
Staff and food
The room was small cramp and uncomfortable
Location was ideal for Brighton and Newhaven
Room was connected to next door, so sound proofing was non existent.
I liked the location the views the gym and the staff were generally helpful
The food was cold and the tea was stewed
Location great - very cosy and comfortable !
In need of some repairs and redecoration
Location was very good for what we wanted to do in Lewes. Rooms and service also good. Value for money
Not the hotel's fault, but as it is a very old building, the floors were very creaky and they also slope in various places which makes it difficult to walk on.
Free parking Good breakfast helpful staff fantastic view over the south downs.
Wonky shower head Low water pressure in shower. Hairdryer low down under a table.
The food and the staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Location was good as close to everything
Room was in terrible need to tlc! Bed was so creaky and uncomfortable I had no sleep at all. Floor very creaky and room sloped to one side! Carpets were thread bare just needs a total refurb
Location is excellent. Staff are extremely helpful at the desk. Facilities eg pool and gym very good. Breakfast is served quietly and restaurant has wonderful views.
Our bathroom needed updating , but the room was fine.
The hotel was central to everything we wanted to see in Lewes. We enjoyed looking at all the antiques in the hotel and found the room very amusing in a historical style.
I found the room a little basic and bit overly warm and stuffy and thought it slightly over priced.
Location, Car Park and 'querkiness'.
Poor TV reception and very small TV No facilities for electric shavers
The hotel atmosphere was wonderful, the age of the place is in the air.
Our mattress caved in in the middle, we were having to hang on to our respective bed edges to stop rolling into the middle, a very poor nights sleep. We were in room 26. Also it took several attempts, even from the staff to get the door unlocked.
Pleasant room in the annexe building. Friendly helpful staff. Pool was very inviting and rejuvenating. Very good selection and quality of the breakfast. Would recommend
Some parts of the hotel are looking a bit tired and could do with updating.
