Traffic noise in our high front bedroom was disturbing late at night and very early in the morning
Convenient for twee shops
Ideally situated to explore the town and close to railway station which meant we were able to use the train and leave the car at the hotel.
Soft, worn mattress - should have been thrown out.
Old beams, helpful receptionist, good breakfast with fresh fruit.
We had dinner, very disappointing. We were not offered any wine and could not catch anybodys eye. We waited an hour for a very tiny fish fillet, a handful of overcooked potato and some beige soggy greens. I watched as this was kept hot for 15 minutes while the chef, who had apparently forgotten the steak sliced it to cook it quickly. I complained but the waitress ignored me. The manager asked later if we had enjoyed the meal was cheerful but not concerned when we repeated out comments. We complained again at check out but reception said he would pass our comments on. £20 each for the meal, not good enough.
No room to park as the car park was full. No information at all in the room.
Nice large room. Beds very comfortable. Décor a little dated.
All a bit run down. Facilities and room. Also the adjoining door had a gap all round so you could hear next door as if they were in the same room.
1. The whole hotel needs a major capital programme to update it. The best description is that it is now distinctly 'faded.' A lot of the paint and woodwork is scratched or in poor condition. 2. There was very limited internet connectivity. None in the bedrooms. 3. There was no welcome or information pack in our bedroom. 4. We stayed 2 nights. The room was not cleaned or tidied during the day and the tea making facilities had not been restocked. 5. Beware before using the hotel's private car park! This is accessed from the high street by going through a narrow archway and then has several sections going down a steep hill. Unfortunately by the time we arrived the car park was completely full. There was no sign to this effect, so we headed on down. There was no turning space at the bottom and so had to reverse with great difficulty up the steep hill and back through the arch. Unfortunately there is an almost invisible black pillar under the arch which I failed to clear, doing some significant damage to the paintwork on the side of the car.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Our bedroom in the annex, although a bit dated, was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent.
The bathroom shower wasn't functioning very well.
Excellent food and service in the restaurant. The building has real character. All of the staff were extremely helpful.
Car parking very limited, our room was in the annex and the floor boards were so creaky we could hear every movement of rooms either side of us, not great for trying to sleep. Our TV was black and white, either through design or that it wasn't working properly. Bit of a let-down
Location/website was honest/ size of room was generous
We were in Lewes prior to running the Brighton Marathon as were a number of other guests in the hotel, we were not told of the wedding taking place appr 30 metres from our window that went on until midnight
Accomodating for a very late booking
We were in the annexe. Big wedding party in main hotel. Not ideal for using the pool which we found to be very shabby and badly laid out. Would have preferred to go to wearing robes and return to room to shower and change. Room very shabby carpet dirty and did not feel comfortable
Location was good especially to see our son in student digs nearby
Swimming pool and spa need updating and steam room and jacuzzi not working properly Bed rather soft and lumpy Decor needs updating
The swimming pool and location
The quirkiness of the original hotel.
decor very tired and in need of updating, holes in carpet, sash on windows broken, bed sagging
great character hotel, interesting historical features, good atmosphere
Room wasn't good only socket for kettle on skirting board, two chairs but no table. Bed needs replacing didn't sleep.Noise from other rooms an issue.
Not a lot hotel needs upgrading everything worn out.
The restaurant was very poor. Poor quality food, badly cooked, and the restaurant manageress needs some lessons in customer service.
Centre of town, close to bus routes and station. Convenient for Brighton and for Gatwick
Unlevel floor of bedroom and beam from floor to ceiling at angle
The cleanliness of the annex at the hotel was appalling. They never cleaned the bathroom at all during our stay and when emptying the bins left most of it on the floor and the dining area was dirty as well, used napkins all over the floor. Really discussed with it, when complained they just wrote it down on a piece of paper which most probably went in the bin.
No lift to 2nd floor, stairs rather uneven. It has the air of a fine old hotel that has seen better days.
Good breakfast. Clean and comfortable room.
instead of being in the hotel we ended up in an annex to the rear of the car park. The most unfortable bed to sleep in. I then ended up with 12 bites from presumably bed bugs.
Not a lot.
We were put in the annexe not the main hotel. All night long there was the noise of people running up and down stairs and corridors.Cars coming and going from the car park right outside our window, on the same level so if window is open you get fumes. And if someone uses the bathroom above it sounds like your under a waterfall.
The bed was very uncomfortable and after 2 nights we asked for another mattress or room. Housekeeping gave us another room immediately which we were satisfied with.
Food was excellent and breakfast room had superb views. Staff were excellent very professional and friendly. Freebies in bathroom much appreciated and clean towels every day.
Shame about the awful pop music in the swimming pool!
Room had character; very well located.
