I thought the restaurant food was very good as was the service. Some people may think the service a bit old-fashioned with chef de rangs and commis waiters but I love it, Grant was my CDR for the evening and he was very good.
I was in room 4 in the original part of the hotel which I liked, but be prepared for noise from the square as the windows are not double glazed
The location in lovely Helmsley. The excellent staff. The food though excellent was rather rich for people with dietary problems so might I suggest that a couple of plainer dishes might be added to the menu as they are on cruise ships.
Bed was too uncomfortable for anyone with a hip problem so I had very little sleep. Lots of noise from occupants of room opposite entering and leaving their room due to heavy door outside and on second night from room above due to creaky floorboards. We could even hear their conversation. A little disturbing.
The staff were excellent The evening dinner and breakfast were excellent Everyone looked after us
We booked into the newer part of the hotel and enjoyed the additional space, especially important with a baby! The tasteful decor was a good blend of modern/traditional and the room offered a comfortable and large king size bed, flat screen tv and free Wi-fi. We loved the option of being able to have breakfast in our rooms as well as in the restaurant. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Overall an excellent experience (but you do pay for it!)
There was a bit of noise outside our rooms early in the morning from the deliveries., however, overall the rooms were incredibly quiet.
Attention to detail , staff very friendly.
waiters too attentive during evening meal, costly drinks in Bar.
Poor reception, unfriendly, nopssibility to pay cash they already cashed in from card, room and bathroom non confort
A comfortable, hotel with character, in the heart of a pleasant town.
We were kept waiting over an hour for a table in the restaurant, which had been booked! During the wait we were invited to have another drink. When I suggested that perhaps the drinks should be complementary, the waiter left, and never returned. Once finally seated, the table wobbled. A piece of cork was wedged under one leg by the waiter, which kept falling out throughout the evening. The food was ok, but nothing special. The wine was warm which the waiter hoped we wouldn’t notice, we did. I was so hungry and fed up by then, I couldn’t be bothered to complain. The decision had already been made, we were never going to return to this hotel! This is all very unfortunate, as this is basically perfectly good hotel. It just has ideas above its station, and prices to match.
Menu did not vary for evening meals it was the same every night so not varying meals
Fab location, staff friendly and helpful.
The Blackswan is very tired and lacking investment throughout. Has the ability to deliver but surroundings are very tired. Did feel we got value for money. Room ok but ensuite very unwelcoming and felt dirty but this was due to its age not cleanliness.
good food. cheerful and helpful staff. excellent position in an attractive village
Very busy Sat night dining and we were not told of need to book a table for our second night so ate very late and the meal was of poorer quality to the first.
A one-night stay during my drive round the Yorkshire Dales was comfortable and a pleasure. The food in the evening was of a very high order.
Breakfast in bed was fab. Nothing was too much trouble
The relaxed atmosphere and that nothing requested was too much trouble.
The two night stay was excellent from the moment we arrived(the weather helped). Staff whether on reception in the bar restaurant and domestic were first class. Room was comfortable and clean and the grounds superbly maintained. The food was to die for. Given this hotel was actually our second choice we fell on our feet.
I really cannot find anything to criticize.
Excellent hotel with quality accommodation and first class restaurant.
Some of the food on the menu in the restaurant was too expensive and the fish portions were far too small.
Quality and variety of the food. Level of service. The Shower Pressure. Relaxing Atmosphere
Softness of the bed. I ave back problems so while for most the thoroughly soft bed would be exquisite I need something sturdier.
The staff were very helpful and polite, the meal in the restaurant was excellent and one of the best we have had. We also liked been on the square and was able to walk around at ease. We were also very impressed that we were given water and fruit for our journey home.
Excellent value for money and service.
excellant all round fabulous food buzzy feel to the bar area esp sat evening. lovely quiet room no 20 could have been a bit larger.all in all great hotel in a gorgeous town
The food was excellent. The room was very comfortable and quiet. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.
The bathroom. Needed modernising. The floor flooded every time we had a shower as the screen didn't stop the water shooting out.
Lovely location and very convenient. Great breakfast
We were staying right at the back of the hotel which meant it was a long weary walk back to our room. also doors to store rooms were often left open, giving us a view of the less than pristine behind the scenes. hotels are theatre, and this broke the illusion, which was a shame
Staff superb nothing too much trouble. Sadly not used to the heat but not a complaint
We were guests at The Black Swan for just one night on our way down to London and were impressed the friendly attentive staff and the classic decor within the rooms. Breakfast the following mornings was a lovely!
- Warm welcome - Great food - Comfortable room
