Charming old building in superb historic market town with excellent walking and outdoor leisure opportunities on the doorstep. Old fashioned atmosphere and charm but with up to date customer service and friendly staff. (We asked if we could leave our car an extra day in the carpark whilst we went walking and there was no problem and no charge) Excellent restaurant. Could benefit from modernisation to improve energy efficiency. Our room was only single glazed and as it was below freezing outside the window was running with condensation. The thick curtains covered the whole radiator (under the window) which meant all the heat generated couldn't get into the room and we had to use the portable electric radiator as well. Restaurant was excellent but the tables were too wide which made private conversation a bit awkward. There was a mistake on the hotel bill which would have meant we would have been overcharged by £15. This was quickly and pleasantly sorted out once we spotted it.

GOod towels, good breakfast; vg tea/coffee in rooms I did not like the fact that my bed was not made properly for two days; the somewhat unfriendly staff - although there were exceptions. I talked to the manager as we left, and am surprised that you and she do not communicate better so you would have known by now what we felt about the hotel. I was very surprised that he hotel did not have free wi-fi, even the town's pub did.

Beautiful period hotel in fabulous setting in Nth Yorks Moors National Park. Comfortable room, friendly and attentive staff, and excellent food if you like a gourmet w/e - which was one of our reasons for re-visiting The Black Swan. Set in the market place of lovely town of Helmsley with plenty to see and do without going too far. Beautiful garden at the back and ample safe parking. We highly recommend it, worth every penny spent on this 5 Star Hotel. Fully intend coming again. Couldn't fault anything other than the room decor which was verging on looking 'tired' but then maybe we do at our age! It cannot be easy keeping up the refurbishing of a hotel of this size and history. We love it as it is, complete with creaky floorboards.

I really liked the room I was given. It was very clean and tidy. It had easy access to the back car park and the hotel garden. It was lovely watching a decent size flat screen tv with excellent reception. There was planty of choice on the breakfast menu. Staff were friendly. The only negative was the long trek through the hotel down several sets of stairs to reach the main part of the hotel for breakfast. During the day I tended to use the back door and walk down the side lane which was easier.

We had booked dinner bed and breakfast for the weekend of 2nd July 2011. After reading some reviews on the internet I was rather worried at what we would find. I can only give my review and say I would highly recommend this hotel. The staff were very friendly the place was very clean and the food in the restaurant in the evening was the best we have ever eaten. We have been on cruises and eaten at some posh places but none can compare to the meal we had on Saturday night. My husband asked for chips as an extra and the waitress said they do not do chips but would ask the chef. We told her we would be happy with new potatoes. When the meal came we were presented with the best chips in the world. How wonderful was that. How I wish we could go back again as every thing was spot on even down to the maid coming into the room and turning down the bed for the night and tidying up for us. So a big thankyou to all concerned for making our stay one to remember. Jenny

Hotel was lovely staff helpful, however dinner menu confusing and over priced, had we been made aware of the room service menu this would have been preferable.

The room and the location being so close to the countryside. I thought that the evening meal was brilliantly presented. We paid for bed, breakfast and dinner. What I really resented was being charged £3.50 for about eight new potatoes and £3.50 for a minute dish of vegetables on top of what we had paid.To then also try and charge £4,50 for a cup of coffee ,after dinner, to me was outrageous. If it is an inclusive deal you expect it to be included.Nice hotel but I am left with the thought our business was obtained somewhat dishonestly.

Comfortable room with excellent quality bedding Quite pricey for what is essentially an average hotel room. We stayed half board, the waiting staff in the bar/restaurant provided a top quality experience but the food proved to be more style than substance. Beautifully presented but tiny portions - the veg stated on the menu was either that small it was practically invisable or made into a puree and used to decorate the plate.
