First rate service from every single member of staff. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was fabulous and the Travelzoo offer meant that it was a superb deal. We will return. Very impressed

We stayed at the Black Swan for our Silver Wedding Anniversary. Hotel was very clean and in a lovely location. Staff were helpful and friendly and left a card and chocolates for our Anniversary in our room upon arrival, which was a nice touch. I would recommend this hotel and would certainly stay again.

We found room and food very good. A very comfy hotel which is much improved compared t a previous stay 6 or 8 years ago. The bar and the dining room did not seem to communicate and that part of the operation needs tightening up. One of the problems is that the main bar servers both the public and restaurant guests and often it seemed the public got priority.

It's location and parking. The staff, who couldn't have been more helpful if they had tried. We ate in both resteraunts and had two outstanding meals, which were presented to a very high standard, both on the plate and by the staff. We would certainly return.

I like the style of the place, the ambience, the food and the accommodation. You cannot say much more than that about any hotel, except perhaps location, which in this case is the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. They don't come much better in the UK! It's a fair treck from the car park to the reception desk, and usually a fair treck almost all the way back to the room. If you visit the Black Swan, I suggest you leave your cases in the boot until you know where your room is.

We enjoyed the warm and friendly service. The food was attractively presented, well cooked and not over facing. The drinks were on the pricy side, both in the bar and the restaurant. We tend to buy wine by the glass which enables us to enjoy both red and white at a meal. You may like to consider whether a wider selection sold in this way would be commercially viable. We didn't enjoy the music in the restaurant. Our preference would really be to have no music at all, but if you feel that it is necessary, definitely not non stop Frank Sinatra - at both dinner and breakfast - and only very very quiet.

Friendly staff Service in the restaurant was a little slow, resulting in my wife giving up on the dessert when all others at the table had there`s. The food was very good though and they did apologise profusely

Quirky building....generally helpful and pleasant staff.....comfortable room We went because of the fine dining reputation that the hotel has but were disappointed.Red wine brought to the table cold,rock hard vegetables (for which we paid extra),no steak knife for an ordered rare steak(for which we also paid extra),interminable wait between starter and main course....mind you,the desserts were to die for! Coffee afterwards was spoiled by a pushy chap who seemed offended that we didn't want anything from the bar!

Location We were bitterly disappointed as we had high expectations. The room was lovely but we were disturbed by a loud whining noise which kept my husband awake and woke him early in the morning to the extent that he went to find the night porter and reported it to him at 5am once I had fully awoken. Staff apologised but we weren't even offered a reduction.

Roaring log fires, beautiful decor, fresh flowers smelling incredible, amazing suite of rooms, wonderful breakfasts to keep you going all day, fine dining with unusual and inventive cuisine. The staff are great especially the young Bulgarian waiter! Ok its not cheap but you get what you pay for. Also there are so many great places to visit nearby - you are spoilt for choice, not to mention Helmsley itself with quaint shops and pubs.
