The Black Swan has long had a distinguished reputation, and it lived up to this on our recent visit. A beautifully appointed bedroom; lovely garden; and outstanding restaurant. The staff were most helpful throughout our stay.

Surprisingly for the price, we were not offered fresh milk in our room. The plastic milk carton reigns supreme even in Helmsley.

The food was lovely and beautifully presented.

We got charged for bottled water when we had asked for tap water. We left feeling digruntled and manager didn't even attempt to retieve the situation.

Excellent food and staff very helpful and made our brief stay very enjoyable. We were particularly impressed by reception staff noticing my wife's disability and immediately offering a more convenient room which also had a very pleasant outlook and was very comfortable. We will definitely visit again

The staff were very professional and there was a warm, homely atmosphere. We also liked the extra touches in the rooms.

I did ask for a taxi I had booked to be cancelled and that didn't happen. I nay not have emphasised this sufficiently.

The set Dinner was excellent. The table service both at Dinner and Breakfast was very good ,friendly and efficient and attentive without being o.t.t.

Wine list expensive. Bar and lounge area were very busy due wedding and rugby but mean't residents could not have seats for pre dinner drinks of coffee there afterwards

Everything was extremely high quality. The room was comfortable, the food excellent and the staff pleasant and effecient

Ground floor room we had in which the window could not be opened.

This is our second stay at the Black swan and yet again we was not disappointed the location is excellent with the village of Helmsley offering so much and the hotel although not cheap an excellent comfortable place to stay with a fantastic restaurant and staff

Excellent food, ambiance and location

Location was ideal as very prominent in centre of village, and the shops and walks are on the door-step.

Staff were very young, and inexperienced. Although the waitress at Dinner was an exception. Dinner was disappointing, small portions and not very hot. Charging extra for cheese, was a joke, as small portion. Breakfast too was not as I expected, small piece of bacon and one tiny poached egg. It looked lost on the plate. Lounges had log fires on (some of the time), these were left to go out and it spoilt the atmosphere. Overall not as I expected for the money, and write-up.

fantastic location with very friendly staff.

Our room was near to a boiler/plat room and all evening and night we could hear a droaning noise which spoilt our stay really. The room was cold so we had to use the oil heater most of the time. We did not dine at the hotel as the menu was a little disappointing and to ask for an extra £3.50 per person for the cheese was very cheeky

The staff were really helpful and very friendly. We were made to feel very welcome and that nothing was too much trouble. The food was delightful; carefully an imaginatively presented. Our pleasant room, which was not too hot, overlooked the well tended garden.

The staff made us feel very welcome and provided extra little touches, like baking fresh croissants when the supply ran out. The rooms were very comfortable and quiet and, miracle upon miracles, had two easy chairs (often there is only one). The coffee and tea making facilities were excellent with a wide choice, including real coffee, and were refilled at least every day - again most unusual. The breakfast was magnificent and allowed us to choose as many dishes as wanted - I had kippers and bacon and eggs.

Insufficient butter on the table at breakfast - we were always asking for more. Only 3 small pots of jam on a table for 4, and we had to ask for more.

The Black Swan is ideally situated for the moors, coastal and city visits. Helmsley is a lovely town, you can wander round the market square and the river close by for an after dinner stroll. The food is excellent in the restaurant, imaginative and tastey.

Our room was a long way from the main areas of the hotel.

Informal and comfortable. Very good reception/bar area.
