This historic building was once visited by Charles Dickens for his public readings. It offers a Dickens-themed restaurant, light, modern rooms with private bathrooms, and a themed bar.

Reasonable price Good breakfast Reasonable sized room
All a bit dated and in need of TLC Could be cleaner
Pleasant staff, good breakfast. Nicely furnished. Good free wifi.
Don't be put off by the outside appearance!
Location, friendliness, comfy beds and good breakfast
Small room . Glassdoor of bathroom. Smelly. Noisy because the room wall and door is not good. Sticky rug.
the room was in good decor and quality the hotel was on the main road but you could not hear any traffic, the staff were friendly.
the hotel didn't have its own restaurant which meant a five minute walk to the nearest restaurant, the shower head could do with descaling to allow full water flow. the bathroom was not as modern as the room itself
Price, good shower and breakfast
Room very small
Not clean Cramped room: the door could not open fully Sausages didn't taste of meat
ambience food staff room near town centre
I was in the city for the Reading Festival and the hotel was in at a walking distance. The staff is really nice and friendly. Breakfast is really good.
The room was a little but small, the toilet flush wasn't working properly, but not a big deal.
The staff were very polite and friendly
The rooms were so small and the Tv didn't work.
Excellent location, just a short taxi ride away from the festival. Staff were very helpful.
No towels in the room on the first night
Breakfast and location!
Nice breakfast. Friendly receptionist. Plenty of free parking.
Just about everything else. I had asked for a quiet room but I was put in a room at the side of the building where I could still see and hear the traffic on the main road at the front. When I asked to be moved I was told that the only other rooms they would let me have were next to the kitchen where I would be disturbed at 6am by the kitchen staff, or in a corridor where the guests had come in drunk and made a lot of noise the previous evening. Given these choices, I decided to stay put. The room was small but adequate for my purposes, but the bathroom light went out on several occasions, plunging me into darkness. I reported this on the first night but as it was a friday night I was told that it wouldn't be fixed until the monday. Not really very helpful as I was leaving on the sunday morning anyway. I didn't really want to touch the switch either as it was making a buzzing sound, but found that a thump made the light work for a while! The bar was a hole in the wall through which you could see bags of what looked like laundry. There were only bottled drinks, which I presume were under the counter or in a fridge somewhere as I couldn't see them. Only a few optics screwed on the wall gave any impression that this was supposed to be the bar. Would I stay here again? No way!
Pleasant, helpful staff. quiet location. freedom of access. good breakfast.
The rainy weather, which the hotel could not help.
Very friendly staff, good location with parking and a great tasty breakfast.
Uncomfortable bed with flat pillows
The man in charge was very pleasant. Breakfast good. Room fine in itself, but should shower rain down on the electrical shower controls?
Could not get out of the rain as front door only opens with a code no. We had just arrived - no code. Trains right alongside bedroom window, running very late and very early. Noise ++ Road noise ++
