Booked the Macdonald Bear hotel for a weekend get away for the wife's birthday. Price was great and excellent value, certainly compared to what other hotels were offering (which wasn't a lot). Location was in a lovely small quiet town, with some good country pubs. Room was huge, comfortable, packed full of facilities (including your own coffee making machine!). Staff were super friendly and welcoming. We had dinner at the hotel and the food was excellent. Highly recommended
character and charm of the hotel very friendly welcome and an upgrade to a beautiful 4-poster room which was extremely comfortable -
I liked the wonderful ambience of the hotel and its location in a most beautiful historic town. The hotel was clean and warm and the staff were all very helpful. We were upgraded to a better room which was lovely.
The price of the drinks at the bar and at dinner was too high.
Lovely 1 night stay, great room with huge beamed walls and ceiling. Comfy bed, air was bit noisy until we found the switch to turn it off! Lovely old hotel with bags of character, uneven floors, old oak staircases etc. Breakfast was beautiful, menu options plus huge buffet/ fresh fruit/ cereals / cold meat and cheese etc... Would definitely stay again.
Lounge area Food
Nice room, great access to Woodstock. Good breakfast selection with croissants on par with France!
I got the impression that the hotel tried to cut costs with the quality of their staff and training. In terms of value, not worth the £200+ per night prices.
Breakfast was good
I paid for an upgrade to the classic room, however received a room very similar to the classic room picture Eventually the hotel changed the room to my satisfaction.
Old beams, real fires, great rooms, lovely bar. Brilliant location in the centre of Woodstock
Lovely friendly staff and great breakfast
Hotel decor is clean but is a bit dreary, not very modern,
This is a delightful, traditional country coaching house hotel. Our rooms were very well appointed and extremely comfortable and breakfast dinner were excellent.
The location was very convenient for Oxford and Woodstock itself is a beautiful little town. The Bear is picturesque with very welcome private parking and helpful and knowledgeable staff. A lovely relaxing place for a weekend getaway.
The ancient heating system in the bedrooms, which seems very temperamental with wall controls that are complicated to understand and soon throw everything out once all the buttons have been pressed!
The hotel offers plenty of quirky character and charm. The staff were outstandingly helpful and personable and seemed to be better trained than many staff in the big five star groups. The stay at the Bear surpassed my expectations and I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel to anyone looking for a boutique style base of operations from which to explore Blenheim and Oxford.
This is a character hotel and so don't expect the kind of things you might take for granted in a hotel chain. For example in our room the wardrobe was tiny taking up the width of a convinient alcove. Also there are no lifts. This should in no way put anyone off. The hotel delivers comfort and quality in spades.
Location Room (Cromwell) Huge bathroom
Price of breakfast
Have wanted to stay here for years and the hotel did not disappoint
Twin room a little small and drinks extremely overpriced! Price of breakfast.
Hotel is beautiful, full of character. Location is good. The food in the restaurant is fantastic.
The service is terrible. Not enough staff to cater for needs of all the guests. We found the service to be so disappointing that we checked out and went to the Randolf hotel in Oxford. This is also a Mc Donald hotel but what a difference, the service is fantastic. The Bear charges 5 star prices but sadly doesn't deliver.
Pleasant, comfortable accommodation in area we wished to spend some time.
Everything especially the amazing feature room. The early morning tea was the best that we have tasted. Thanks for a great two nights. We will be back.
Ambiance of hotel and character.
It was exactly what we wanted- a characterful hotel with lovely rooms in an idyllic spot.
That we couldn't charge things to our room with a debit card.
The hotel is in a superb location in the lovely village of Woodstock. The suite we had was on a mezzanine level. Lovely bathroom. Staff very friendly and eager to help.
We had dinner in the restaurant. Food was very stodgy, expensive and to be honest a bit tasteless. For such a prestigious hotel the food was a disaster. Breakfast was better but my wife's bacon was burnt and my kippers overcooked
Hotel with bags of character very near to choice of eating places, as well as being very close to Blenheim Palace (10 minutes on foot). Quiet location and very comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast in charming dining room. Staff friendly and helpful.
Nice hotel in a good location. Lots of character. Bed comfortable.
Hotel was far too hot (even with radiators all off). Some maintenance badly needed (window handles falling off, loose taps, very noisy toilet cistern, lights not working). And smelled a little bit like an old folks home when we arrived.
The staff were lovely, so friendly and helpful
Our room had an unusual odour which was rather strong at first then I assume we got used to it as it wasn't as noticeable. I think being an old building it was probably a bit damp. Perhaps a diffuser in the room would help.
