The location was good. Very quiet. Breakfast was good.
The hotel seemed very worn, there was lots of dust on the television. In the lounge there is a picture of a log fire on the wall stuck on with blu tac which we thought was a bit naff.
It was quiet with large rooms friendly staff and good food
Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Went out and bought food to suit my dietary needs. Very comfy bed
Hotel is tired and shabby. Shower head did not fit in wall holder. poor water pressure for shower and temperature varied when others drew water in other rooms. Have stayed in much better B&Bs for less
The hotel had a nice "character"
Breakfast,clean room.price of room.
Room 36 fan on in bathroom all night not turn off, could do with a make over but suited my needs working away from home £50 a night did have 3 beds in room,
Was made very welcome and the rooms where spacious and lovely bedding , bathroom clean and tidy , breakfast was yummy xx
The room was rather warm without heating on xx
The bar and the staff
Not much of a view from my window. So much so the window was frosted.
The hotel is well placed in the town and there is plenty of car parking at the rear, if you know how to get round there. Lot of history in the building. You will see that I have made some comments about what I didn't like, however I think it fair to say that if the hotel is exactly where you want to be then the price I paid wasn't as bad as it would seem and there are places nearby where you can buy a meal at a very reasonable price, including breakfast.
Found the staff to be rather surly. There are a lot of stairs, they are uneven, not well carpeted and in some places rather narrow. The whole place could do with a refurbishment, as mentioned the carpets are thread bare in places, in my bathroom (Room 44) the basin is badly cracked & the taps had no indication of which was hot or cold. The toilet bowl has been replaced with a white unit and the old seat used, which is cream and damaged, one of the rubber buffers on the bottom missing. Where the bowl has been replaced the flooring has a piece missing. The wall paper in the room is peeling in places and where screws have been removed from the walls, raw plugs have just been painted over and some of the dado rail is missing. Breakfast coffee and tea are only available if you ask one of the waitresses, no pot on table and you also have to make your own toast, but I this was not explained to me and I waited expectantly for it to arrive! The worst part of this was that the first morning I had to put the bread through twice, other people also trying to make toast and the second morning the bread was barely defrosted and I again had to put the bread through twice, one side ended up black the other barely brown, I also noticed that the toast was not crisp due to the ice having melted and steamed the bread. I had the full English breakfast, both days some of the things on the plate were hot other things barely warm. The restaurant itself is like the rest of the hotel, run down and in need of TLC, not dirty at all just tired and worn out.
Good location, good food. Large warm, clean room. Emma in the bar was so helpful and friendly, and Ryan L and Charles in the restaurant too. We had an excellent evening meal and relaxed in the bar after. The breakfast was very good....lots of variety available. Yes, the hotel is looking a little "tired" but was excellent for an overnight stay.
Do phone for directions to the car park before you arrive, it is towards the station down some side roads, not easy to find. At reception we were greeted by a very surly young man- I don't wish to name him on the website - he may have been having an off day but what happened to being welcoming and friendly to your customers!! He was, actually very rude to myself and my daughter. Am afraid I wasn't at all happy with his attitude, and mentioned it to the manager the following morning. Hope that he took notice of our comments!
Comfortable bed. Bathroom with moisturiser and soap dispenser, nice touch. Good range of food for breakfast. Staff very helpful putting tables together for the family. Friendly staff.
Door to bathroom did not shut. Outside the window a drainpipe ran on to the flat roof and it was very noisy in the morning when it rained.
COMFORTABLE HUGE BED. LOVELY BREAKFAST AND EVENING MEAL.
DECOR NEEDS UPDATING
Spacious room and comfy beds. Nice breakfast and nice staff at breakfast although appeared overwhelmed.
We could literally hear the pub conversation word for word. Plenty of f-ing and blinding. Sticky surfaces. Very plain decor.
We have frequently stayed at The Bear including New Years Eve and have always find it most acceptable. The staff are great and the breakfast is wonderful. The rooms have all been acceptable apart from this time.
This time we found the room to be the worst we have had. It was right in the eaves of the hotel and the floor was uneven. This made me feel quite unwell. My husband was unable to stand straight on one side of the room because of the beams. It was certainly not worth the money we paid for the one night.
Fabulous staff Comfy bed Excellent breakfast Organised a taxi for us Got our room ready for us early so we could get changed for a wedding we were attending
Some furniture in the room looked a little tired but everything was clean and functional
Location is fantastic and within walking distance of local shops. Also ideally placed for visiting historic Portsmouth and the Spinnaker Tower.
The lack of an elevator meant lugging luggage up and down narrow, steep stairs. The hotel paintwork was scruffy and in need of decoration. Window frames were rotten. No Air Conditioning. Whilst not being early birds, choice of breakfast was very limited and some items unavailable and being removed whilst guests were still dining. I was served breakfast coffee from a coffee pot, but it was cheap, undrinkable INSTANT coffee. During evening dinner we were served "corked" wine and when we remarked about this, the young totally inexperienced, untrained waitress poured new drinks from the same "corked" bottle. An opportunity is being wasted to cash in on the fact that the hotel could be advertised as historic with earlier guests including Queen Victoria and Sir Winston Churchill. American tourists would flock to the hotel if a little time, money and effort was invested in maintenance and upgrading. A disappointing shame.
Absolutely nothing.Wouldn't let a pet stay there.
The place was filthy. The staff didn't have a clue what they were doing. We arrived late afternoon, only to be told our rooms weren't ready! When we found our rooms they were absolutely disgusting.I can't even begin to describe the bathroom! So bad we left in disgust.
Room not bad and beds very comfortable. Some pleasant staff particularly in breakfast room.
En suite very poor. Door wouldn't even close being too large for frame. Toilet unspeakable and extremely difficult to flush - we suggested atvend thaththey needed to give this urgent attention. Only one small shelf and one towel rail, thus totally unsatisfactory. On the first evening we decided to eat in. We didn't eat there again. Scampi was of very inferior quality indeed. This hotel professes AA 3 star. - way off key. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone A shame. Such a nice building deserves better
Cleanliness. Very friendly manager and restaurant staff. Food and restaurant service was excellent. Although our room was facing onto the main street it was very quiet. and very convenient to walk to the shops and shopping mall.
Floor and bed so crooked in our room we had to sleep the other way around not to mention the angle of the furniture and bath water! As an elderly couple there were too many steep stairs for us to manage our luggage on our own easily.Reception service could be improved, we were not even asked how our stay was when we left. The duvet cover(which was very clean) was 18 inches shorter than the duvet!!. Newspapers did not arrive in time on both days. TV only had one channel, we did complain but this was not rectified.
comfortable room and bed, nice breakfast
room was very expensive
sticky tops in the room
£40 a night with a choice of 8 cooked breakfasts was certainly good value.
Some noise in the night from either heating, air conditioning, kitchen or whatever..But no big deal.
The location was ideal with plenty of parking. Good Restaurant Menu for the Evening and very good breakfast. Freshly cooked.
Hotel is a little tired, hallway and stair carpets and the en-suite bathrooms all need a facelift. Residents not able to purchase alcohol after 23oo when the Bar Closes. Would have been nice to at least have been asked for "Last Orders".
The family room was generous in size, the bed was large and comfortable and the staff very friendly
The shower was faulty, there was a noisy function on until late on Saturday night clearly audible from bedroom, cleanliness was average and would benefit from redecoration
my dogs could stay and were very welcome ;-)
