Less than a mile from York’s historic centre, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are good-value rooms and a restaurant and bar.

Quite clean Friendly staff
Noise Decorative standard of rooms Not like the photos in any of the. 3 rooms we stayed in. Rotting fruit at breakfast!
great location. Staff available if needed
location staff parking
could have been cleaner
Great value for money. And fab location. Staff friendly anough. Deffinatly worth staying there for afew days for a cheap break away.
Getting locked out of our room at 2am in the morning. Had to wait an hour before anyone came to reception to help. You pay for what you get as it could do with abit of a vamp.
Lovely area easy to get to just 10 minute walk from the centre, 15 from the train station. We stayed in the outside annex room and it was lovely, fairly clean and spacious.
There was cobwebs on every corner of the walls, a lot of dust in the bathroom and the bathroom taps kept swapping which was hot and cold. Thought that the £7.50 charge for each breakfast was a bit steep and so we didn't have it and chose to eat out.
Location & car park
Poor cleanliness, looked very tired & jaded. The hallway was filthy. The shower was basic, no bath mat, unclean
Asked for guiet room had 2 to choose from had ground floor. Asked for extra pillow friendly young man got me one straight away. Full tea and coffee basket. Hot shower. Location to york and got free parking space.
After reading mixed reviews and viewing photos of hotel decided to book got room for £69. Have had better quality rooms with breakfast for less price. The hall was filthy, bedroom carpet round edges hadn't been cleaned for weeks, shower room floor filthy at edges. Flat feather pillows. Had a look at very thin mattress it had no protective cover on and looked disgusting. Husbands bed nearly collapsed when he went to bed, with wooden leg nearly falling off.Only thin blind at single glazed window which was pouring with condensation. Why they had to put a large drop leaf dining table in front of radiator I don't know and the single chair was to filthy to even sit on.Could feel the cold coming through outside wall. Agree with other reviews no way 3 star not even 2. The Churchill down the road is 3 star. No good saying anything to young friendly staff cos they probably don't even see the person who owns the hotel. Didn't have breakfast even tho decent reviews. To top it off sounded like we had herd of elephants above us all night (Not hotels fault). Will stay well clear next visit and go for national hotel chain.
Bathroom Lack of toiletries Lack of heating
We arrived at midnight and passed the check-in hour, and the staff left a letter at the door for us. It is really considerate. The room is very warm and cozy. Had a very enjoyable stay there.
The bathroom might need some work.
Location is perfect, and free parking is great.the staff were very friendly and amenable.coffee ,tea and biscuits were provided. Towels and linen were clean.
Desperately needs redecorating, walls etc were rather mucky. Our shower was only warm for a short time and the head did not stay in position, there were several cobwebs in the room and the window did not shut. Guess you get what you pay for!
We were in outside annexe. Good size room and bathroom, parking, location, nice staff, shower, warm, lots of tea/coffee.
Room a little tired. Entrance a little scruffy. Did not see inside rooms so not able to comment.
Good off road parking, which was available when we arrived at 1000hrs. Close proximity to York Centre. We we in room 12 which is at the top of the property, a bit of a climb but worth it. Room was cosy and clean.
There was quite a bit of road noise, and a problem with one of the radiators which we made the proprietor aware of.
Rooms were clean & comfortable, staff were good, no problems with parking.excellent for the short walk into town. Can't comment on food, we ate out.
Forgot to say at time of booking that we were pensioners, so we were allocated rooms on the top floor, 65 steps up.not good but, i forgot to say we were a group of 4 pensioners, at booking, so really our own fault. Our friends room had a portable heater as radiator didn't work.also TV non functional in their room.as we were only there one night it didn't matter.
Clean and tidy, fresh towels .
Spent nearly £200 for two nights for a small basic room. Exspected a double bed and got a 3quarter. In the night I rolled over and due to the small size of the bed and cabinets at the side I cracked my head on the cabinet twice. The bathroom we had was tiny , I'm a tall 6ft guy and trying to fit between the side of the shower to the toilet was daft, I had to open the shower and had one leg in the shower to go pee. The shower fittings had seized up so the shower temperature was either hot or scolding with the pressure dropping every now and then. Washed my hands in the basin while shaving with my top off. The hot top turned from cold to boiling hot in a few seconds and should come with a temperiture limiter or warning as I scolded my hand and chest due to the splash. This wasn't hot it was boiling. I was not able to make a complaint as staff where not available at the reception on a morning or on a night . As the reception opened at four while we where out. For the price the hotel let me down i would have given it the benefit of the doubt but with all the issues we had didn't justify the price.
The B&B is well situated - a 15 minute walk from the city centre. The car park is free and relatively secure. The bed was comfy. We were able to check in early which was great.
The B&B is shabby and feels unloved. The carpets (where there are carpets) don't look clean; the paintwork is messy and the free wifi didn't work in our room. The shower wasn't very good either. We opened the window during the night and my husband was bothered by the smell of cigarette smoke from outside. Over all we weren't very impressed with the hotel and found the price (almost £90 a night) to be very poor value for money. We won't be going back.
The staff were really friendly and helpful; breakfast was really good and the city just a straight 5min walk.
No evening meal, or even snack option - we arrived quite late, so would have been ideal to eat in the hotel. The bathroom needed some work but was functional.
Very welcoming. Cosy room, well heated, stocked well. Comfortable beds. We were out more than we were in.
Wasn't really bad but needed decorating and updating a bit.
Great location. Good to have parking so near to York centre. Staff very helpful.
Accomodation very basic. Fine as a crash pad but have stayed in better accomodation for a similar price.
A little dated..could do with a lick of paint..several fixture and fittings not secure..wouldn't be a first choice but a last resort
Entrance dirty..front rooms get traffic noise..shower and toilet very confined
We enjoyed our quiet, warm and cosy self-contained room in a separate building at the back. Friendly, helpful and considerate staff. On an attractive street within easy and pleasant walking distance of the centre.
Noithing would not stay again
Small rooms single beds dirty enterance hidden cost on breakfast would not use again
Good location and breakfast. Lovely Georgian building. Lots of potential.
Needs some updating (bedside light not working; bathroom door coming off hinge; headboard loose, slightly scruffy stairwell) and generally there is a slightly worn down feel as if it hasn't been redecorated for some time.
The location is convenient and very easy to walk to the centre of York. There is a pub next door. The full English breakfast is good but very expensive £7.5 per person.
The place is really old and they shouldn't charge £100 for a small bedroom.
location, helpful staff.
size of room. Room needed a revamp (new decoration). Standing water in shower room round wc.
