The hotel was situated in an excellent position for Harrogate centre. We found the hotel to be very tired and shabby. The carpets on the stairs and corridors were threadbare and repaired with duck tape! It also looked rather grubby and because of this was not very welcoming. The net curtains in our room were dirty, there were only 4 channels available on the TV and we couldn't watch BBC1 as the sound was faulty, we did report this and were told that none of the other guests had complained but someone would go to the room to try and fix it. We were later told that they were unable to rectify the problem but they had changed the broken wine glass as we had requested.

The location was near the town and the surrounding gardens were attractive. The food was good. A lovely building with beautiful stained glass windows in the dining room. Perhaps in need of some upgrading of the decor.. Had the air of faded grandeur.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. We really needed to check in early and I let them know in advance and it was no problem. We had a lovely room, which was both quiet and comfortable. The inclusive breakfast was delicious with a wide variety of choice. There was nothing that I did not like.

This is a superb hotel . The staff were very helpful, and friendly, The room was very comfortable and clean, and the food was good, especially the breakfast. The Cairn is ideally situated, being within 10 minutes walk of the centre of Harrowgate, but is still very quiet and peaceful We would recomend this hotel.

Very close to centre of Harrogate. Staff were friendly. Breakfast was good. There have been comments about the need for updating the rooms when people have said that they like it as it is. We are all entitled to our own opinion but at £110 for our room we were very disappointed and would not return or recommend. Maybe the rooms vary but they should be priced accordingly. Our 3rd floor room had a tiny window overlooking the fire escape and was very dingy and dark. As we got out of the lift we were greeted with carpets that were so old that they were held together with duck tape and the paintwork was chipped, dirty and more worthy of a hostel. (Saying that I am sure that some hostels are much better and I do not wish to do them a disservice!) The room itself was not some where you could relax or wish to spend any time.I Did not use the bath because it did not look clean and the seal around it was mouldy and grungy. There is a difference between preserving historical features and basic maintenance. The bar area was huge but uninviting and the décor was very tired and extremely dated. Even a lick of paint would improve things. This is the first time I have ever raised negative aspects about a hotel but feel strongly that we were definately not given value for our money in this instance.

Friendly staff, the hotel was clean. Good breakfast and a reasonable room rate. The location was ideal being a two minute walk from the town centre, yet the location was quiet. I would certainly use this hotel again when visiting Harrogate A carpet in the bathroom is not hygienic. I thought the main entrance was impressive, however the curtains were old fashioned and detracted from the wonderful pillars (but that is a personal view)

its location, breakfast was fine although service could have been better We didn`t think the upgrade was worth it as room allocated was not a club room. It appeared to be a normal double with wine and few sweets added. Only one bath robe provided. Hotel looked very tired and dated Its in desperate need of a makeover.

The staff were very helpful, the room was large and though it was a "club" room it lacked a fridge and the quality one in the bathroom where one would expect with such a designation. The breakfast was excellent The exteroir of the hotel needs redecorating and the corridors on the upper floors need similar treatment and some recarpetting

We have stayed here before and find the Cairn clean comfortable and the breakfasts are second to non. The location is good for the exhibition center and close to town center. A large car park adds to the total convenience. The staff are all very good and helpful. The hotel is a bit tired and the floors squeak, the in room tv. Could be better.

The hotel has a relaxed atmosphere, excellant location well within striking distance of most interests. Hotel staff polite, informative & most helpful at all times. All in all a very enjoyable stay. The cricking floorboards in the bedrooms bit of a pain.

Location Threadbare carpets stuck down with tape, unclean bathrooms and bedrooms, dust mite filled bed throws/covers I felt itchy entire stay uncomfortable bed well past its sell by date and dated decor vert creaky floorboards thoughout hotel hence no rest. Nasty staff accused me of smoking in room even recieved written warning and I am a non smoker ! Breakfast is all pre cooked and is self service from a heated trolley it all tasted cheap and vile and was like pigs at the trough with everybody having to wait their turn. Tv in room was a small portable from the 80's I would not reccommend this palce whatsoever.

The hotel itself would appear to have been quite grand at one time and if refurbished could attract hordes of people looking for the elegance and grandeur of such a large hotel. It has some timeless features such as the stained glass windows, sweeping staircases and lovely paintings, but it needs a lot of tlc. It did not live up to my expectation and I was fortunate enough to get an excellent rate of £99 for club room so can't grumble but when I compare the original room rate of £250? against what I got from a Premier Inn stay at £29 per night - I can't really say there was any significant difference - both have attentive and polite staff, both offered a good size room with nice bathroom facilities - but one was extremely expensive in comparison to the other.

The location close to town centreThe breakfast wss very good The hotel was shabby and not well kept The whole place good do with a coat of paint/complete makeover. In the public areas and our room looked clean on the surface but this was not the case as was easy to see The evening menu was not up to much as choice was poor. The room we stayed in only had 5 tv channels ,in this day and age why do they not have freeview as a hews channel would have bben nice
