This family-run, 5-bedroom traditional pub overlooks the River South Tyne. It has traditional cider and cask ales, homemade bar meals and welcoming, friendly staff. Alston is the highest market town in England and is 18 miles (29 km) from the M6 and the Lake District. The Cumberland Hotel is an ideal stopping-off point on the C2C cycle route and Pennine Way. Some bedrooms have beautiful views with a backdrop of the North Pennines. There is secure storage for bicycles and dogs, as well as a beer garden and a patio. There are opportunities to walk, hike, cycle and play golf in the local area. The South Tynedale Railway is not far. Helpful and friendly staff. Food was good quality and wide choices for breakfast and evening meals. Faulty items in the room. Real ale quality/ choice not as good as expected by reputation.

Everyone was so friendly and we were so well looked after. The food was great, we had dinner and breakfast. We were travelling with a young baby and all her needs were catered for with no fuss whatsoever. The beer and cider went down a treat.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent beer!! Room was a bit old fashioned considering the price. It was the most expensive room we stayed in during our touring holiday.

Good beers and food The Pub and Hotel are both suffering from the general economic recession. The decor is old, the bathroom, because of its age was prone to black mold. Probable recent bathroom repairs or alterations had left unpainted areas. The on-the-wall fixing of the ancient and tiny TV meant that it could not be watched in bed.

Dont be put off by the exterior. It does look a bit tatty, but inside it is warm, comfortable and welcoming. All of the staff we met were outstandingly helpful and the food was great pub standard. The establishment has won the local CAMRA pub of the year award for three tears running so unsurprisingly the real ale and cider is first class. Magnificent views over the hills and a quoits pitch in the garden - perfect. Cant think of any improvements, except the general upgrades which are steadily being completed.

Good dinner. Excellent breakfast. Nice staff. Bed was comfy. Crisp sheets, soft pillows.................... Room was tired. Could do with a spruce up. Not homely or comfortable but alright for an overnight stay. Would be a bit disappointed if had booked for a longer break. Room was cool at night. Went to bed with my socks on as no heating during overnight stay.

Stayed at Inn whilst cycling the North Pennine Cycle Ride. Bikes stored in secure room. Staff were very welcoming and breakfast freshly cooked for you and served with a smile. Evening meals good value. Inn refurbishment not quite finished but this did not affect our enjoyment.

Very friendly and welcoming staff who were keen to do anything to assist our enjoyment. Menu choices were varied and well cooked. The Shetland Salmon was particularly good and the breakfasts were cooked to order by the friendly owner. Bedroom comfortable and the bed was super king size so we slept well.
