Duke Of Wellington InnWest Lane, YO21 2LY Castleton (Show map) Excellent, Score from 39 reviews“A lovely quaint old Inn. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning. The food is excellent and staff very helpful. An excellent base for exploring the Yorkshire Moors, or the coast.”

The Duke of Wellington is an ivy-clad traditional eighteenth century inn located in Danby, near Whitby. The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the Moors, Whitby and the coast. Built in 1732, the Inn was used as a recruiting post during the Napoleonic Wars. An iron plaque of the Duke of Wellington was recently uncovered on the outside of the building and has been mounted on the fireplace in the bar. Restoration and refurbishment has improved the facilities while maintaining the character and charm of this traditional country inn. Hotel Rooms: 9

It is in a lovely quiet village where the sheep are roaming around the main street and it is a very relaxing atmosphere. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the food was good , reasonably priced and service was first class.Although booked a single was given a double bed. No WiFi and very patchy mobile reception.

I cannot complain about my stay at the Duke of Wellington Inn. My room was clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful. I expected that noise may be an issue, but to my surprise, it was not. I particularly like the feel of this pub when the locals came in each evening for their pint and often brought their dogs. Wonderful! I could come and go as I pleased without having to walk through the public bar area.

The staff are friendly, the pub is comfortable and clean and the food is delicious. The location is isolated and very pretty. The menu doesn't appear to have changed over the 4 or so years we have been visiting. Our room was a bit disappointing this time, quite small and not as nice to look at as the others we've been in.

A lovely quaint old Inn. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be returning. The food is excellent and staff very helpful. An excellent base for exploring the Yorkshire Moors, or the coast. We did alot of walking with plenty to choose from. A added bonus for me was that I was able to take my dog, and she enjoyed her stay also!!

We loved the clean room and bathroom. The fact that you could eat an evening meal in the relaxed bar area was a plus & the food was very good. Staff were attentive and friendly and the location was lush. Sheep wondering around grazing on the green outside was wicked. Two things. For some reason there were no chicken dishes on the evening food menu? Tricky for my wife who doesn't like red meat and only tends to eat salmon. Also, & this is really picky, watch out if you're tall!! It stands to reason that in an old pub you have to expect the celings to be low, but in the upstairs accomodation areas the celings are L.O.W. If you've a tendency to bang your head, wear a crash helmet!!

The hotel was friendly and exceptionally clean. We had a key to the rear entrance so could come and go at anytime. The meals were excellent and the evening meals were varied and reasonably priced. Towels were changed daily and the room was cleaned to a high standard. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Duke of Wellington. Would have been better if they had their own carpark but there was plenty of off road parking.

friendliness of the staff, food, the room, though the bed could have been bigger and loved the small touches like shampoo . also the fact that knowing my husband was a smoker he gave us a room with a door that led to a pleasant area outside. though not a lot of choice with the menu , what was on was very nice, loved the breakfast.

This is a really nice, pleasant, comfortable country hotel. It's located in the middle of the countryside, sheep were grazing on the village green opposite my room when I looked out in the morning. It's in a quiet location, ideal for any country activity. The staff were really helpful and pleasant, the breakfast was great and the coffee was also very pleasant which makes a change for a lot of hotels these days. The bathroom in my room was perhaps a little small but this is nit picking really - it was spotlessly clean and the shower was brilliant.

Good service, friendly and helpful staff. The food was excellent especially the evening meal. Our room was very comfortable, peaceful, calm and quiet. My husband and I had a very pleasant stay at the Duke of Wellington, Denby and we certainly will recommend it to our friends and family. Many thanks John and Val Menzies.

Very helpful manager. Excellent room- upgraded to a double though I had only booked a single. I had ticked smoking preference so was given a room with a large private outdoor patio.... wonderful. Lovely bathroom and tea/coffee/ biscuits plentiful in the room. Breakfast lovely and plentiful. Had to wait 30 minutes for breakfast as tables who sat down after me were served first- maybe because I was a solo traveller??

Friendly staff, beautiful part of Yorkshire and close enough to visit Whitby etc. Quiet location. Mobile signal strength not suprisingly poor given the rural location but that was only a minor point.

The countryside around the area was breathtaking, well worth the trip just for that alone. Easy access to the coast, with plenty to see on the way. The food was excellent, and real ale for the discerning palete. The staff were very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for them. We will definitely return again next year! The only real complaint is there is no car park as such, although there are parking facilities very close to the hotel.

We were made very welcome on arrival by the landlord and shown to our room personally. The room was kept very clean at all times during our visit. The bar staff were very helpfull. Food served hot and plentyful, in fact sometimes to much, a good selection of wines. I had requested a certain wine which was not on the menue and management sent out for it, We were most impressed over all at the Duke of Wellington Limited parking and the shower room was a bit on the small side

I was on business due to a job on the local railway line. There was no room for a laptop desk in the room, but since this is mainly a holiday hotel I couldn't expect there to be.

Perfect location for visiting the N Yorks Moors. Clean, comfortable room, friendly staff and excellent food.Well kept beer. Earlier breakfast availability would be a benefit, especially for anyone wanting to catch the early morning train towards Whitby.
