“The food was excellent. The hotel is located in a village a few miles east of Durham City, so travel into the city to see the Castle and Cathedral and to shop was easy. The owners were helpful with directions for getting around the area, particularly for a trip into Durham.”

A small family-run hotel with after dinner entertainment provided by the host. It is 5 miles east of Durham city, on the B1283 road at Haswell Plough.

John and Dorcas Milner have been the owners of The Gables Hotel for the past 23 years and have lived in the village of Haswell Plough for the past 38 years. The Gables is a small family-run hotel which has a very good reputation for its fine English cuisine. It has been recommended by the AA and Les Routiers. The restaurant is small and cozy.

The GABLES Hotel is on the B1283 road approximately 5 miles east of Durham City, one of the worlds most famous and historic cities. The Cathedral and Castle date back to the 9th Century.

One of England’s most famous open air museums, Beamish, is only a half hour drive away, and is a must-see for anyone visiting the North East of England.

If you enjoy soccer, there are 3 Premier teams all within a half hour drive. St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United, the Stadium of Light, home of Sunderland A.F.C. and the B.T. Riverside Stadium, home of Middlesbrough Soccer Club.

If you prefer shopping, Europe’s largest shopping centers are nearby, including The Metro Center in Gateshead, and Eldon Square in Newcastle.
There are also great nightclubs in Newcastle and Stockton.
