The host, John, was a wonderful character full of old stories and Dorcas, his wife was a very good cook and nice person. The hotel is located a few miles from Durham so unless you have a car or re willing to pay for a taxi or take public transportation, it isn't a viable location. Worth the trip though! The room was lovely overlooking a field of sheep and cows ; the bathroom was huge, but be sure John shows you how the shower works..it is different. The pub is a hangout for the locals and they were very welcoming and lots of fun. All in all a wonderful couple of days; and the surrounding countryside is gorgeous....rolling hills and also close to the ocean.

The only negative is that we didn't get to stay longer!

I was delighted to find the Gables as everything in Durham was booked solid and I had to be at my daughter's graduation. As a result my expectations were low and was very pleasantly surprised. Thewelcome was friendly and the breakfast was excellent.

Nice sheets and clean room. Pleasant owner. Reasonably priced.

The place is in desperate need of renovation and is a bit 'tired' and the rooms are a bit neglected. The room was missing a few things like the TV controller, milk for tea and the information pack was clearly many years out of date. The breakfast was poor (cheap saussages and bacon and no juice offered) and pre-cooked for us rather than done to order. There is nothing that a little TLC would not improve.

Very helpful landlord. Very chatty and welcoming. Very impressed that he went to the trouble of getting in some green tea for one our group.

Friendly owners, good food, comfortable room

My room was at the front of the building overlooking the road and there was quite a bit of traffic noise as I had the windows open due to the heat.
