~We arrived at the end of a busy school/work week and travelled down in the evening from Edinburgh by train. On arrival, Reception was kind, friendly and efficient. We were quickly checked in and given a lovely, feature room which I had booked online. It lived up to all our expectations and my husband, a business travelled was very impressed - high praise indeed as he stays in very upmarket foreign and domestic hotels. The room and ensuite were a great size.. Food and drinks excellent quality and value. Quick service, lovely ambience. Our son became ill on Sunday and the hotel accommodated our late check out request with no fuss, directing mum to a chemist for medicines. We will be back and highly recommend to families, couples, professionals alike. Wonderful old fashioned elegance but with the up to date facilities we want in this day and age. I even have told Gran in Ireland who now wants to visit too. Well done to you all. Only slight complaint would be that the heating was not on in room 5 when we arrived and so room a little chilly but soon warmed up.

I enjoyed the Dappers Bar food - both the Chicken Caesar Salad and the Damson and apple crumble and I liked the warm, old fashioned feel of the public rooms. I felt the kitchen impinged a bit too much on the public rooms - both the smells and also the boisterous shouting - not all of it to do with placing of orders. I would have liked a bit more peace and quiet.I had a problem because the hotel tried to charge me the full room price not the lower price that was offered on the internet. Luckily I was carrying the print out of the reservation so I was able to get them to agree to the correct price.

The staff on reception were helpful. Due to train delays I had to arrive late [9pm ] but this did not detract from the welcome. Well Done! There was no one on duty when I arrved in the restaurant. service at was very slow. Accordingly, I had to go and find someone to take my order. The haddock was well cooked but the poached egg was too hard - not soft as I would have expected.

I liked the design of the hotel. Really cosy and welcoming. Even with me being a solo traveller, I never once felt uncomfortable. Staff were very friendly and reception was very welcoming. I had booked a single room and it was really spacious and with a bigger bed than the normal single. The only thing I have to say is that there could be more choices for dinner that cater for people that don't eat red meat. Every dish had some sort of meat in it except the spinach lasagne. But it was very tasty!!!!

In general it was very nice, especially the Christmas decorations in the reception/lounge area. The receptionist was really friendly & helpful (blonde young lady) but the duty Manager (30's male) was miserable. The room was very hot and took quite a while to cool down. Not a major complaint though.

A very comfortable hosterlry that encompasses five hundred years of service to the general public, local poets and royalty. The ambiance mirrors the history of the George Hotel I felt that the hotel was alittle understaffed .

I liked the friendly helpful staff and the Old Architecture and warm hospitable atmosphere of a proffesional yet traditional travelling inn. A very comfortable stay with a good resteraunt. I did not like some small details, like the dirt on the fire escape/ balconey on my window ledge when I opened the window. The ceiling was quite low the room felt hot at times and the carpets were a bit tatty in corridor and room.

this was the 5th and last time I stay at the George. No attempt was made to ask if we as guests were able to access the allocated room which was situated up 5 flights of stairs and the room situated at the front of the hotel was, due to staying on a Sunday night very noisy as groups of drunken men shouting in yhe street below until 5 am! I booked the room although friends had invited us to stay with them at Keswick which we did on Monday night but I wanted to stay at the George as we had so enjoyed it in the past.Breakfast was not as personal as before and the waitress seemed stressed and indifferent whilst serving. The whole ambience of a comfortable, warm and pleasurble stay has somehow been lost-I really am very sorry.I will not recommend it again.

We chose this Hotel because it was near the venue where we had been invited to attend a large celebration party, together with several other guests who were invited to the same gathering. (Our son Mark Whitehead had also made a reservation, but owing to a house move, he had to cancel and forfeit his deposit ) Over all, we were disappointed with the George Hotel, though we were not troubled by noise as badly as other guests who had rooms at the front of the building. We realise it is in a popular Tourist area, however,it is certainly not value for money.
