I have never, and never want to again stay in such e run down hotel room. Such a shame a beautifull old coaching inn has been allowed to get in this state. |

Convenient car parking and town centre location with easy access to taxi rank and excellent breakfast. Hospitality tray appreciated. Steep steps up to first floor for access to bedrooms - no apparent lifts so not suitable for disabled guests. Old fashioned bedding package i.e.sheet, blanket and bedspread. |

convenient location The bed was old and knackered - the decor was old and knackered - the bathroom was old and knackered. Moreover and this is why we were creeped out by our stay, parts of the room were filthy (stained bedspread, smelly cushion, mould in the kettle, dirt on the TV control). The room was old and its an olde building - so we accept that the room and bed sloped at a 30 degree angle but we really don't accept the lack of cleanliness and poor DIY to patch up tiles etc. We won't be recomending this hotel. |

We liked the friendly service, the general ambience of the hotel, the food, the central location and the convenient car parking Possibly nowadays you should opt for a flat screen television. The image of the current sets do not reflect a quality hotel. Updating of some of the furnishings should be considered. The carpet in our room was very worn. |

My glass of wine was nice. The badly stained mattress on my bed, the threadbare carpet in my room, the peeling paint, the hole in the bedspread. |

We have stayed at this hotle in the past but their has been a general drop in standerds that we were quite shocked at The comfort of the bed was terrible and the nose in the room from the street was so bad it continually woke us up during the night |

Relaxed, friendly atmosphere, helpful staff. Well located in city centre. Neighbouring loud music at night meant we could not have the window open - not your fault! |

Location and how pleasant the room was After travelling all the way from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, for a birthday party, the early morning call on the Sunday at 9 am, was not appreciated especially as it wasn't booked. |

very nice hotel in the centre of town, as our room was at the back no noise at all from the main street on which it was situated. Nice restaurant and lounge. |

The hotel is a very interesting building in the heart of the town. There's a great restaurent in the hotel or lots to chose from right outside the front door as well as many bars. |

It was very central, excellent location - would recommend purely based on loaction it was not really value for money. Room was a bit shabby, it was very hot and the aircon wasnt working properly. Shower hardly had any power. |

Although an old hotel, it was very clean, with friendly and helpfull personell. Really like that old english pub atmosfere. Very good location, right at the centre of the town, with very good bus and taxi services. Small room, no elevator (but okay for such an old hotel) |

The staff were helpfull and polite. The food was ok. The hotel was in a central postion. The room that i was given on the foirst night was not good. I expalined to reception the following morning and they did move me to a better room. Can you please explain why hotels always put men travelling on their own in the smallest grottiest room? |

Very helpful staff, although often busy. We got a much better room, on request, this second time of staying at the George. Comfortable and 3 star. The lounges are very comfortable and the food is good. The hotel still retains the atmosphere of an old coaching inn and is very central to the liveliest part of Colchester, the town centre. The hotel bedrooms are in need of refurbishment. Being in the heart of the town, it can be noisy in the early hours; hardly the fault of the George, because of the location. |

The reception staff were incredibly unfriendly and unhelpful - arriving at 9.30 pm there was no possibility of dinner or even a sandwich and no helpful suggestions as to how I might find something to eat. The young woman in the bar was delightful and helpful and finally suggested a Spar up the road where I could buy a sandwich. She was keen to help me solve the problem of finding something to eat but the man on reception had no interest whatsoever. I also had a heavy suitcase and am in my early sixties and there was no offer of help up the very steep stairs to the room. Similarly the next morning the check-out was cold and perfunctory. They could do with training the reception staff. |

It was a very enjoyable stay the staff were very pleasant and helpful - the rooms were a bit cramped and smelt a bit musty but as we were only staying for a weekend we didnt mind too much and the location was perfect. |

Friendly and comfortable with good food (inexpensive) I stay at The George alot and the carpetsand furniture need updating ( I know some have been done) Some of the beds are very hard and some of the bedrooms need updating !) Since the smoking ban was introduced I really feel the furniture in the lounges could be renewed - threadbare arms to armchairs. |

It is beautifully fitted out to provide a high level of comfort without detracting from the building's age or history. The bar service was rather slow. |
