Score from 205 reviews Very good
Conveniently situated a short walk from the town centre, this hotel is minutes from the town's mainline railway station and within easy access of business and industrial estates.
Score from 444 reviews Good
Friendliness & helpfulness of the staff was obvious from the first moment. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent positioning for the town.
The rear entrance was very dated and stank of cigarette smoke as did the access corridor to Reception - Not a good first impression. The bedroom, although spotless, was dark due to the dense net curtain, -This was necessary as the window was next to a road - lighting was sufficient though
Good location in town centre not too far from public transport links. Building very interesting, full of history. Reasonably priced
In need of some redecoration and upgrading. Breakfast ok but not outstanding
Lack of wifi in room
Ease of booking, friendly helpful staff. Thank you.
The staff, the duvet,me breakfast.
It's a bit tired, worn carpets on stairs, that sort of thing.
Position of the hotel
Staff level of attentiveness and guest orientation. Some of them were just filling a job.
nice varied breakfast
parking was difficult
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at this hotel .staff are excellent food good needs a little T L C. Would happily stay again .
The staff and a good breakfast
Hearing stories about haunting and the rooms need a bit updating
quirky building, very old with character
looks like it needs a total refurb. Plastic covering on the beds is a no no!
The friendliness of the staff and quality of food.
The car park! We did not know where the hotel was, and when we found it we realised we had gone past the turning for the car park, involving our having to go right round the town's one-way system again.
IT SAYS IT WAS A RESTING PLACE FOR OLIVER CROMWELLS ARMY-----I THINK THEY WERE THE LAST ONES TO CLEAN IT...UNDER BED AND CANOPY ARE A COMPLETE DISGRACE
Staff are very pleasant and helpful. An excellent breakfast with good service. The room was adequately furnished with tv, hairdryer, and courtesy tray.
Car parking is limited and tight. The room seemed a bit cramped.
Dated, smelt dusty, actually for its money this was the worst hotel i have ever slept in, the bedroom wasnt fit for service
The receptionist, Holly, was helpful and friendly. Location is handy.
Just because a hotel is historic it shouldn't be an excuse for being badly maintained (grotty paintwork, peeling wallpaper, cobwebs etc) and certainly there's no excuse for the bad housekeeping I experienced - dirty towel on floor in my room and the toilet was disgusting...hadn't been cleaned after last guest had used it - ugh! I was moved to another room where there was a huge vent pipe outside that made a terrific low rumble. Second floor (and room) terribly hot. Have stayed here three times but won't be doing so again - very shabby.
Atmosphere, ambiance and food. Evidence of much needed renovations and improvement. Pleasant staff, rooms large
Limited parking. Layout restricted by hotels listed status can be a little disorientating. Decor dated but this is been addressed
hotel very basic
Reception staff competent and helpfull.
Staff working in the Bar and Breakfast room need training, a smile does not compensate for bad service.
the rooms and bathrooms are spacious, full sized kettle, helpful staff on reception, old building and quirky, downstairs bedrooms,
if you are late going in to the reception the kitchen closes at 9pm and one may not have dessert to complete ones meal, getting into the car park is awkward if you have anything larger than a people carrier, there appears to be no residents lounge, cooked breakfast not available before 8am, no lift, only one pillow each
easy to find, cheap price for the night good brealfast
could do with a lick of paint and some tlc. noise from a music event outside the window no air con
Good value for money, breakfast included. For evening meal had a sandwich purchased from Morrissons just up the road.
Parking was very tight, had anticipated this after checking on Google Maps, and took the smallest car. Had to climb out of passenger door.
decoration and appeirence very tierd needs some TLC
