Featuring a blend of 18th century architecture and modern facilities, our hotel is centrally situated in the town, within the medieval walls and a short walk from the old quayside.

Our hotel houses en suite rooms, all with a reputation built on first class service and individual attention. We offer a lovely walled garden to the rear of the hotel, a wonderful place in which to relax of an evening with a glass of wine, or dine al fresco throughout the summer months. The restaurant caters for a wide variety of tastes providing breakfast, lunch and dinner each day of the year. Sunday lunch was brought back serving a succulent roast. Come and pay us a visit and let us look after you whilst you look around the Northumberland and Scottish countryside.

Hotel information

The Kings Arms Hotel dates back to the 18th century, when it was a coaching inn known as the Hotel on Hide Hill.

The ground floor and gardens of the Old Town Assembly Rooms were stables and accommodation. The hotel had famous visitors such as writers Charles Dickens and Lewis Carrol.

By the end of the 19th century, the Kings Arms became central to the town's social life and was a base for the merchants and traders of the former corn exchange at the bottom of Hide Hill.

Into the 21st century, the hotel has resisted urges to sell to popular pub, restaurant and tourist chains. Instead, the management have focused on maintaining the Kings Arms as an independent townhouse hotel.

If you are looking for a weekend 2-night stay, there are sometimes special offers running on certain dates. There also have weekly 7-night stay rates.

Food & beverage

The Il Porto di Mare restaurant and bar is open daily to residents and non-residents alike. This modern 21st century styled restaurant has a unique Mediterranean ambience with an eclectic menu available. The beautiful terraced garden is open throughout the summer months where you are welcome to dine alfresco or enjoy a drink in the walled garden to the rear of the building.

Our 28 bedrooms each have their own individual style. All our bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and some have a bath or shower. Our photographs shown on the website are those of typical suites here at the hotel, and have bath and shower, with large bedrooms.

Area information

Nowhere else can match the rich mixture of breathtaking sandy beaches, undulating hills and valleys, fertile farmland, abundant wildlife, villages of character , historic towns and great castles.
This is the border of England. Stretching south from the Scottish Border and the great Tweed river, contained in the west by the wild beauty of the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park, and on the east by the magnificent Heritage coastline. At the head lies the elegant Georgian town of Berwick-upon- Tweed, encircled by Europe's finest preserved Elizabethan fortifications.
One of the most fought over towns in history, it has changed hands between the English and the Scots fourteen times over 300 years and is now one of the country's most rewarding hidden assets.
Two great edifices watch over the borough's superb Heritage coastline. The castles of Holy Island and Bamburgh seem to nod acquaintance to each other from their great outcrops of rock perched high above an area of outstanding natural beauty, a coastline characterised by wide, clean beaches and rolling dunes.
Holy Island has a rhythm of its own, dictated by the tides. Accessible only twice a day when the tide drop away from the causeway, it is the source of the original Lindisfarne Gospel and has an ethereal quality where nature and history combine to provide a peaceful refuge for the spirit.
Bamburgh's spectacular setting is only matched by the richness of the rest of the coastline. Facing offshore you look out onto the "shoal" of Farne Islands, the destination of unforgettable sea-borne trips to savour the colonies of seals and seabirds, from the bustling little port of Seahouses. There, when weather permits, a fleet of colourful fishing boats ferry expectant passengers from the working harbour on the forays to see puffins, eiders,shags,comorants, terns, gulls and doe-eyed seals.

The food was good and the staff were helpful

I did not like the room we were given, it was very old, the beds were uncomfortable and the bathroom floor left a lot to be desired!. We left after one night as the weather was very bad.

The location and staff

The hotel was very overpriced, I stayed in a 'superior room' £89 per night and the TV had only 4 channels, the decor is very jaded and is in need of refurbishment

Central for Berwick and surounding area

The dinners were not up to scratch. Vegetables were not included in the meal. Service due to shortage of staff was terrible.

Yes - to start with they did not have our reservtation, they did however give us a room after we showed them the confirmation booking. Room had been used as a changing room for bridal party confettii on floor, cobwebs in room thick dust under furniture, writing on mirrors. When we got home there was a message on answermachine asking me to ring and pay for the room - this was after one nights st

when we asked if it was possible to have a room with a shower instead, it was no problem to move us

courteous and helpful staff; nice restaurant; comfortable beds; central location

rather old-fashioned shower in bathroom (ran off taps, no shower curtain so bathroom got wet); room rather dark (window very small).

Good, central location. Despite there being no hotel car parking, there was free parking a short distance away, as well as free overnight parking overnight up till 9am outside the hotel. Berwick is also a lovely town with wonderful walks around the walls and by the River Tweed.

Very noisy at night time from main street with any window open. However, our room was directly above the street; it would be quieter elsewhere in the hotel.

The staff were quite helpful and friendly

The decor was very out of date and the bathroom facilities were not of a suitable standard, ie: our shower was just an attachment to the bath taps and there was no means of controlling the temperature. Would have been very easy to scald yourself. Also, although the hotel states all rooms are en-suite our bathroom was outside the room! The noise level from the street outside was unacceptable.
