Breakfast included it was good. Constantly no reception staff - both morning and evening. No bell or instruction how to reach reception staff (keys need to be handed to reception when leaving hotel) £135 per night for a four poster bed. the room is spacious but the interior is just old. water kettle is so old that not able to reboil water after one time use. Whirlpool in the bathroom but very small...not very luxury. and also the toiletries are not luxury as stated in the hotel website.

Nothing. If offered the coach house rooms run a mile as quickly as possible. Room 438 was dark and damp and felt damp. The fabric was distressed.andt he shower had no hot water.I Contacted the md by e-mail to explain my complaints. His reply was disgraceful and aggressive. He suggested that I do not know how to use a shower. He further asserted that the room was often requested by his visitors.Over the years I have stayed in hundreds of rooms ,many cheaper than this hotel, but this is the first time I have felt the urge to complain since I felt physically uncomfotable in the room which I think is not suitable for guests

They came to our rescue when another hotel had got our rooms mixed up, we were four ladies of a certain age and they had given us double beds!! The Newington was very handy for walking into York. The breakfast waiter was very friendly and our food was served promptly. We had secure car parking. Security was non existant, we put out own room keys, as did another guest, in the slots because no one was on the desk or came when the bell was pressed several times. We had to do the same when we came back after eating out at night. We ( or anyone) could have taken any keys!!! The key system really needs updating. The beds had springs poking through, I put a folded blanket to soften it. The bath tub was slippery and there was no non slip mat. the decor was dated and the bedspreads were tatty.Breakfast was plentiful but overcooked.

Convenience to the racecourse & city centre. Bedroom windows were bolted...no fresh air.The bathroom suite was circa 1970'S.the decor was drab.the 4 poster was made in d I y woodwork class. No shower curtain.my daughter-in law was hospitalised ,I gave the hotel 10 days notice cancellation of a2nd. Bedroom & was still charged £50.I was charged £160 a night for the room ,when it was worth no more than £75.Had it not been for the fact that I had to be at the racecourse at 7.30a.M.for Channel 4 Racing I would not have stayed. This hotel were it not for its location could not command this nightly rate.I Would not recommend it to anyone.

Nothing (except that it was over)! Everything - dirty, cold, dated, creepy place, rude and unresponsive service. Should have just paid more to get a real hotel room. Seriously worth 45 quid a night, max....that is the quality level...old run-down and not safe for single female travelers. They will put you in a ground floor room in the "coach house" which is out behind the hotel with poor lighting across a dark parking lot, big windows which onto dark little yards covered by trees, so there is no security. Keys are hanging out in the open with nobody watching them at the front desk...really inappropriate levels of security all around, and to add to the element of discomfort, cold damp stinky rooms, with old beds and linens and dirty walls...my dorm room at St. Johns over on Lord Mayor's Walk 10 years ago was a luxury suite compared to this dump.

The room we had was at the top which meant we did not have people passing the door. It was out of the way from the rest of the hotel and we relly liked that and when we come again we would look for thhe same room I was not impressed with the hair dryer it kept cutting out which gave me the impression it was possibly faulty. Breakfast was nice but the coffee was far too strong and I only drink coffee which meant I was having to add loads of hot water to it. The first morning the coffee was actually cold and it had to be returned. Otherwise lovely

Ease of getting to the Hotel from the Railway station, public transport excellent from the Hotel. Warm and clean, friendly staff and reasonable meal times. Swimming pool could have been a little warmer, but still very enjoyable

The location is very convenient -- the distance to central York is easily walkable and there is plenty of take aways and pubs nearby on the way to the town center. The room was comfortable and clean although the design was a bit aged. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was pretty good. The whole hotel is supposed to be non-smoking but our room strongly smelled of cigarettes. I chose this hotel instead of a cheaper one in the same location because this one advertised having a sauna -- but it turned out that the sauna had to be booked 30 minutes in advance and there was an additional charge for using it.

The convenience of the location. Short walk into the City and also on a regular bus route including the sightseeing tour bus. Short taxi ride as well. The staff were efficient and polite and the reception were very helpful. Drinks were a bit on the expensive side.

Good close location just outside city. Short 15 mins walk to York Micklegate walls and convenient for buses. (£4.60 taxi each way to centre.) Good sized car park to rear of hotel. Friendly quiet and good english breakfast. Room was warm and cosy, plenty of hot water too.Was excellent vaue stopover. For intimate candle lit dinner try "Plunkets" restaurant in the city- nice Mexican & English menu in old surroundings. The hotel also does evening fare. Convenient for racecourse. For a hotel with small pool I'd stay again. Decor is a bit dated. No changing room. Small pool was a bit chilly- could do with heating more! No complaints for what was charged. Will come again.

Good location, just a short walk into York or bus route outside the hotel, secure car park, friendly staff, fantastic shower (dispite the age), ideal for a short break. The pool looked great - but didn't have time to use - maybe next time! The hotel could do with a little modernising (decor a little dated) - Breakfast was a bit un-organised - there was plenty of staff serving, but they didn't seem to know what the other was doing - a little training would go along way.
