Nothing. If offered the coach house rooms run a mile as quickly as possible. Room 438 was dark and damp and felt damp. The fabric was distressed.andt he shower had no hot water.I Contacted the md by e-mail to explain my complaints. His reply was disgraceful and aggressive. He suggested that I do not know how to use a shower. He further asserted that the room was often requested by his visitors.Over the years I have stayed in hundreds of rooms ,many cheaper than this hotel, but this is the first time I have felt the urge to complain since I felt physically uncomfotable in the room which I think is not suitable for guests

I booked the Newington on a recommendation from a friend.I found that the room was to a good standard, the staff very friendly and capable, and, the Hotel in a good location, far enough from the centre of York for peacefulness, but, close enough to be able to walk into York in approx 10 minutes. Although not eating any main meals in the Hotel, we found the breakfasts very good, with a full range of fare to choose from. The swimming pool was a bonus we did not expect. I would have no hesitation to recommend the Newington to friends and relatives. The only thing that detracted from our stay, was that we were placed at the front on the Hotel. This was not a problem in itself, apart from the traffic noise, especially buses, in the early hours of the morning. If I decide to return, I would ask to be placed in another part of the Hotel.

The location was great Very poor value for money. The price did not match the facility on offer. The room looked as though it had not been decorated for 60 years and had a grim fusty feel to it with dirty wallpaper above the old bed head boards and threadbare carpet. Just as well we were so close to town to get out of the room asap!

The location is wonderful and the staff welcoming hotel needs some TLC. We were there five days, bed linen not changed or room vacuumed. Also be prepared to lug your own bags up narrow stairs. Very early checkout.

The room was an unexpected suprise as it had a four poster bed and jacuzzi bath. Great value for money. Very spacious and would definitely go again. Short pleasant walk into town centre.

The staff were friendly. Following a previous stay with my wife 3 years ago we decided to recommend The Newington to our friends and return with them for a night in York to celebrate my Wife's birthday. I am not one to moan and complain but would like anyone staying there to be cautious of the following: The bar was far too expensive, £13 for a large glass of red wine and a large glass of rose wine. The following morning the breakfast was without a doubt the worst I have ever been served. Cold beans, rubber eggs from being under the heat lamps for too long, the hardest black pudding and fried bread I have ever come accross, the only thing that was worth eating was the cereal and the toast. If you value your teeth forget ordering the full English. To top it off we used the sauna and were charged £5 for the pleasure. We will not be staying there again..

10 minutes walk into York, nice location next to race course. Very dated. Extremely run down and in need of a re- vamp. Rotten windows,HOLES in the bed sheets,STAINS on wallpaper and bathroom tiles. All in all very disapointing amount to pay for the worst place we have ever stayed.

Good location, just a short walk into York or bus route outside the hotel, secure car park, friendly staff, fantastic shower (dispite the age), ideal for a short break. The pool looked great - but didn't have time to use - maybe next time! The hotel could do with a little modernising (decor a little dated) - Breakfast was a bit un-organised - there was plenty of staff serving, but they didn't seem to know what the other was doing - a little training would go along way.

They did not clean the mushrooms, that came with the breakfast. I found 2 big lumps of soil (about the same size as a malteaser) which was fried with the mushrooms.

Everything! A well run, comfortable hotel where we were made to feel welcome and "at home" by a friendly and efficient team. The location is perfect - allowing guests to abandon their cars and use the excellent public transport thus avoiding York's car-hostile environment. The cooked breakfast is a great way to start the day!
