Old Swan HotelSwan Rd, HG1 2SR Harrogate (Show map) Very good, Score from 268 reviews“I found the old swan to be warm and friendly and I enjoyed my stay there. I will be recommending the old swan to friends, family and collegues. ”
Maureen,
Upper Tean
Set in over 5 acres of private gardens, The Old Swan was once the famous retreat of Agatha Christie. It offers modern rooms with en suite facilities, and free on-site parking. Originally an 18th-century coaching inn, it now features rooms with tea and coffee-making facilities, a TV and trouser press. Some also have a stand-alone bath and views over the garden. The traditional Swan Lounge and Bar offers a selection of beverages and afternoon teas, while the Wedgewood and Library restaurants serve fresh, locally sourced dishes. The Old Swan was home to Agatha Christie during her disappearance in 1926, and has since been used as a film set for the 1977 film, Agatha. Just a short walk from Harrogate town centre, the building is 5 minutes’ walk from the famous Betty’s Tearoom and 15 minutes from Harrogate Railway Station. Hotel Rooms: 136, Hotel Chain: Classic Lodges.

Location and breakfast. Car parking was excellent. I have already complained to the hotel that the room needed attention - dirty shower casing and a bedspread which had blood on it. The hotel is faded and the door casings are badly bumped and need repainting. There were insufficient members of staff on duty at breakfast.

Clean and comfortable. Good location to the town and convention centre. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and have not come across a 'handling surcharge' for settling the account with a credit card. To be told there is an additional fee after your stay has been confirmed at an agreed internet rate, has put me off staying here again. It was only a nominal charge but why not include it in the price? Then the customer doesn't feel that they're being fleeced for extra cash when they leave.

Like the bathroom, room was warm & clean Didn't like that reception asked for £2.00 charge to pay by cc - not listed on booking form , not said at check in ( although they showed me a sign at the side of reception that I didn't check in at) ! - said I was unhappy as this wasn't expected - they did not charge - they blamed the booking agent instead

The convenience of the location of the hotel, staff very helpful and friendly. Just happened to get rather a surly waitress at Breakfast one morning, who just did not know how to smile. !!!!!

Comfortable, helpful staff, good location, restaurant food excellent. Loud banging noise from outside two or three times each night - about 4/5 a.m. Sounded like from central heating pipes.

The only great thing about this hotel is it's location - the Old Swan forgotten how to be a good hotel. The room they put me in originally was awful. Dark, dingy and not very clean. I asked to be moved but they said they couldn't move me until the next day because they were full. The room I had was 238 right at the back of the hotel and unfortunately during the night the noise from the generators was pretty bad. The bathroom was tiny and inpractible. The staff at breakfast were worse than useless, I waited to be served for ages and when I asked for capacchino was told we don't do capacchino at breakfast. I asked for cappacchino because there was a photo of it on their breakfast menu! The breakfast was grim to say the least, the haddock was awful, tiny and over cooked and there was a £3.50 supplement. The service generally in this hotel is awful. The breakfast staff do not clear plates away - when they bring the main cooked breakfast they don't even take the cereal bowls from the table. I was moved to a nice room on the second day (180) overlooking the gardens, but the room was not very clean especially the bathroom. My total stay cost £403.50 for 3 nights and I have to say I don't think that was good value at all. I have stayed at the Old Swan many times over the last 10 years but I have to say that I won't be rushing back!!

I stayed at the Old Swan Hotel as my friend was getting married nearby. I found a very good rate for a single room on Booking.com. The single room was small and rather hot but was clean and comfortable with everything I needed. The shower was fab and the staff at the hotel were very incredibly helpful.

The room was small, but very clean and comfortable. There was a historical ambience and elegance about the hotel (albeit the pages detailing the history were missing from the welcome pack in my room). The breakfast scored highly for quality, quantity and variety and was served efficiently. All-in-all a pleasant overnight stay. The reception staff were slow to notice that I was waiting, although very professional when they served me. The complementary tea/coffee was hidden in a cupboard and I didn't find it until I was about to leave. The sound insulation between rooms was poor and I was woken early by the guest next door having a shower.

Everything. However the staff were excellent and so helpful with my son who had a train delay and did not arrive at the hotel until 5 am! I can recommend this hotel to anyone for the location, faci8lites and staff. Food was also excellent. It was a real pleasure to stay here.

Friendly and helpful reception staff. Clean spacious rooms, clean bathrooms The breakfast menu didn't match what was available, there was a full selection of hot food including kippers but there were bakery goods missing. While there were plenty of waiting staff, our orders were slow to be taken and the tables were not cleared after people had left. AT one stage we were surrounded by at least 10 tables waiting to be cleared.

We loved the food, absolutely excellent evening meal and extensive choice for breakfast. The staff were first class, polite and helpful. The room itself was large and well equipped, clean and the bathroom has recently been redecorated. The whole hotel had an old fashioned charm about it, even the smell was of polish. The lounge bar had a lovely fire burning. Truly beautiful hotel and we will be returning in September.

Loved the history and the fact that it is an old hotel. Beautiful conservatory; quite exquisite could see that it would be a wonderful setting for a wedding etc. My friend had a Christmas party in there and said it was fantastic with a superb Christmas tree and a brilliant atmosphere. I just hated the coffee. It was coffee flavoured water, though I did not complain. Need to use more packets in the filter machine!

Location and parking is good and its architecture and period style is attractive. It is very tired and needs much updating - paintwork banged and scratched and ceiling paper starting to come away in bedroom. The food is very minimal for the price, particularly the starters and side orders - not adequate at all, and appears "penny pinching". A starter advertised and lauded in "Yorkshire Magazine" was on the menu presented but unavailable. One of my group wanted to have a latte coffee and was told by the waiter to go to the bar for it. He did not like being told it was his job to fetch it!

Bedroom was adequate, but room was very well serviced. I am really sorry but I could not say that anything else was up to standard. Very disappointed. Had a 3 year old booked in for Xmas Lunch which you knew about. I had to buy a present so that Father Christmas had a gift to hand to her,had I not done that she would have gone up along with other children and there would have been no present, even though your manager had told her to go up. Dining room food on Christmas Day was cold, waited more than 5 minutes for vegetables, service poor, with no atmosphere. Breakfast buffet inadequate and service very poor, particularly on 24/12 and 25/12. I would not recommend your hotel to anybody.

Very spacious room, even though I had booked a single it had a double bed and the room was large with high ceiling & big windows. Faded grandeur, charming and not a 'corporate' feel Comfortable bed and good bed linen Very clean Good range of teas, biscuits in room Only niggles were: Only one socket so had to keep swapping over kettle, hairdryer, laptop, mobile etc. Need to have at least 2 spare sockets in rooms these days. No shelf in bathroom to put toiletries - had to use small top of WC to balance things on.

Location, nice entrance, reasonable parking. Paid £120 per night for 4 nights b&B.paid for large dbl room.Room was veery cold as it had only 1 radiator in it.There was a damp patch in the corner of the room. There was allegedly a view of garden or town (neither materialised),we had a view of a fire escape, thats if you could see out the window which permanently had moisture on the rotting windows.Room was not vacuumed the entire time we were there,as there was some dirt on the carpet at the start of the break, which was still visible at the end of it.The cost of alcohol from the bar was exhorbitant.I Have stayed in this hotel before ,but would not recommend it.It would appear that they are trading on the Agatha Christie connection, definitely not worth anything like £120 per night.
