Very convenient for the beach (East Cliff), and also for the University Halls of Residence - useful for parents visiting their children. Shops and cafes/restaurants within easy walking distance. Quiet, leafy area. Marketed as a "modern boutique" hotel, but I felt the website was somewhat misleading as furniture and fittings in the bedrooms/bathrooms were functional only and not of a particularly high standard, and our room was much smaller than the one illustrated online. The Thai theme seemed a bit superficial. Breakfast service was very slow, and not particularly helpful when the sausage in my husband's meal was undercooked.

The bathroom was very average - poor shower, cracked tiles and not well cleaned. The breakfast was horrendous... Overlooked, small servings and sub-standard ingredients. Won't be returning to The Orchid.

Breakfast service was very good, friendly and helpful staff. Was nice to order breakfast and have it brought to you rather than a buffet and eat as much as you like! Had the wrong room, should have been a double but we ended up in a twin room. So had to change this and a disappointed with the double room once it was changed. The room was very small. The bathroom smelt strongly of damp, which if you were sleeping near the bathroom door was not pleasant. The shower leaked, was a big puddle on the floor which disappeared when left for a few hours. The major complaint was the fact you had a party going on in one of the downstairs rooms till 1am. We were not advised of this when we checked in. We went out for a meal, came back and heard the very loud music. Our room number was 202 which was the directly opposite the courtyard and to the party. The doors would open and close and the music was so loud we couldn't hear the TV. I called to complain and was offered another room....howvever this was 10:30pm and we were already in bed and in our nighwear.

General first apperance of lobby, bar area and location. Limited parking when hotel full. Hotel being used as wedding venue with no alternative commutal bar area for guests not attending. Fixtures and fittings in room were tired and in need of refurbishment. Room gave an air of grubbiness. Overpriced for accommodation provided.

We liked very much leaving the Hotel after staying 1 night there. The Hotel is very old and needs refurbishing and definitely not value for that money ,Luckily we found much better new and modern and better situated hotel in the second day and left the hotel. There was also only 1 staff working in the hotel while we were there,On the way when we are looking for the hotel,we rang the hotel, there was no answer, when we were in the hotel,tv remote control wasn't working and I rang but still there was no answer,I had to go downstairs to tell them with my pyjamas on...:) Good experience but definitely not good Hotel needs refurbishment.. Very Old Hotel Not modern / telephone calls are not being answered

The friendly staff and comfortable decor in the reception area and dining room. Whilst the 'Front of house' looked great, the bedrooms looked 'tired'. Some fixtures were worn or broken. We had to move rooms because of a leak through the ceiling and whilst the staff were happy for us to move rooms no-one came to help us move or look at the problem. In our second room the bedside lights were not working - we did not bother to report this until the following morning when we checked out.

The staff were very nice and the breakfast was great. The telephone in the room was attached to the headboard of the bed which was a bit irritating, and one of the lights in the bathroom didn't work.

The room was roomy, clean and well appointed, large comfortable bed. The breakfast was a bit manic with supplies constantly running out and too few staff in support. The dining room was very busy with tables so close together you couldn't actually sit comfortably as the chairs backed into each other. Also had to queue for 10 mins to check out.

Helpful receptionist. It was incredibly noisy as there was a stag party group of young men who were already drunk in the middle of the afternoon. There was also a hen party group staying there. All these people arrived back at the hotel after 3 am, so our sleep was constantly disturbed. We were also harassed in the bar by another group of revellers. I question whether the hotel should have continued serving drinks to people already deeply intoxicated.

The staff, very helpful and welcoming and our room was located, as requested in a quiet part of the hotel away from the Christmas party! Hotel itself in need of redocoration and the room was rather cold on arrival as heating had not been put on

Its location to the station and to the town centre cannot be faulted. The hotel had no real issues, but I did feel that it felt more like a b&b than a hotel. On arrival there seemed to be a lack of staff to help man the bar and the reception at the same time

Suited us perfectly for what we wanted. Good value, comfy bed, decent breakfast and great staff. Nice toiletries too. Definitely suitable for a quick stop and very close to the sea front (well for us a 6 minute walk is perfectly acceptable!) Nothing to dislike really. The toilet in our bathroom had an issue which needs some maintenance but nothing to really worry about!
