Horrible horrible horrible experience. The man at the front desk was nothing but rude. As if I was holding him up. Turns out he is the managing director in charge. What a horrid man. Room was cheap & looked cheap too. Location is far from the city centre if walking. Checkout is at 10am. Tv didnt work. Windows had bars on them which made it feel like a prison cell. No heating. Trust me, there are cheaper places near by which are so much better.

The hotel is very run down. The outside area gives the impression of a hotel in decline, and a management that is not the least bit concerned about the state of the building, or does not have the financial ability to carry out the remidial work required. If you look at the pictures on the internet the hotel loooks quite nice, but these pictures are old and the reality is vastly different. The hotel has suffered a problem with a water leak or escape of some sort in the past and there is a strong smell of damp throughout the hotel, and in many areas the ceilings are stained from water damage. The hotel is cheap but there is a reason for this. If you are traveling alone and do not mind this would be ok.

Can't say anything positive except that it was a budget accommodation. This is not a 3* hotel and that I can assure you. The place needs to be refurbished really. The worst thing was the breakfast! I went there at 8:00 and there was only 2 guests. There were about 8 tables unoccupied but non were usable so I had to gather peaces from this and that table. Food quality also poor (I received two peaces of toasted bread which was cold and burned) and I had to leave it without having really anything. I asked for a refund for the second day breakfast which I received with a bit of feet dragging. The one in the lift is the worse. Carpets every where has big stains. Staff didn't wash the cup properly so I had to ask to be replaced. Over all I think I will not consider this hotel given that there are many other hotels in this area and with only few pounds more one can get a better deal. Internet was not available except at the bar and that didn't seem to be working stable.

Not a great deal. It's dreary and depressing, In much need of a refurb and the bar was staffed by the receptionist, who, running between the two he was then later seen vacuuming , very Manuelesque!

The Bed Linen was clean It had a three star rating on the outside but inside was a very tired and run down hotel. Wallpaper was hanging off the walls in the public areas, the corridors smelt damp, and he general look of the place was not very good.. The room had cigarette burns on all the furniture and a nub end floating in the toilet. At breakfast time their was dried food splashed on the paintwork where we were sitting. Only stopped the one night then moved to the Brittania hotel in the city centre for the same price. What a difference!!!

Good WiFi in bar. Toilet wasn't flushed. There were used toiletries from a previous guest. Fire alarm went off several times at 7am and afternoon also. Only the night reception clerk was capable of basic civilities. A simple "welcome" or "thanks for your stay" would go much further than silence when checking in and out. Elevator had a potent smell of urine. No WiFi in rooms as described on booking.com. Cheap price attracts loud, door- slamming guests. Definitely not a hotel to get a good night's rest in.

Clean room at a good price. However, there was a kitchen fire at 6.40am and we were evaculated for 70 minutes whilst three fire tenders attended to put it out. These things happen. However when I came down to book out and asked what had happened I got a very offhand reply; it was clear the staff member on the desk was uninterested in my comfort. What a pity; I don’t like to be made to feel I am not worth consideration.

Staff were very nice and extremely polite. Bathroom was clean. Plenty of parking. Bed very uncomfortable with springs that dug in all night. Room very shabby, desperately in need of some tlc. Electric socket broken, hairdryer didn't work, thermostat on radiator broken so couldn't turn down heat, window very difficult to open, and catch broken. Water company working on pipes meant there was no hot water in the morning. Hotel should have warned the guests. Was meant to be staying five nights but left after one.

Location Although not particularly rude the reception staff lacked enthusiasm. There was no "enjoy your stay " when handed the door entry card from the evening porter or when leaving a " thank you " from the morning receptionist. Catering was not brilliant. The breakfast when I arrived at 8am was awful, sausages overcooked and toast only toasted on one side. For this we were charged almost £6 . On a Health & Safety matter I was not impressed with staff standing on chairs changing light bulbs in the dining areas whilst the public were present.

Bedroom - grubby with large electric iron mark on floor Bed - a "pull-out" temporary bed only about 12" from the floor; difficult to access and incredibly uncomfortable. Restaurant - the worse Indian meal I have ever had; even the menu descriptions were not accurate/

Unfortunately there was not a great deal to like about the Portland Hotel. The Portland Hotel is in urgent need of a refurb. It's dark and dingy. The fixtures and fittings are badly worn. The Reception area is narrow and not very welcoming. To get to our room meant using the lift - hold your nose or bring plenty of air freshner! Our twin room was relatively clean. But watch out for the air lock in the sink - the mixer tap sprays water (warm or hot only) all over you! The adjoining door marked 'Fire Exit' was padlocked! The tv was state of the art - 20 years ago! The breakfast was included and was edible although not very hot. All in all if you are looking for somewhere cheap but not very cheerful then this is the place.

The room had no toilet roll, the cold water tap on the hand basin did,nt work, the lift did,nt work properly when you were inside the doors would close and none of the buttons would work. The staff were not very friendly and a full english breakfast consisted of sausage scrambled egg and a mush of baked beans which looked like they had been baking for days and that was the full english breakfast! Please don,t waste your money on the food if you do stay there

The close proximity to the city centre. But mostly my comments are negative. While the room was comfortable the Hotel heating is off all day until 6 in teh evening and makes the rooms very cold and uncomfortable. The reception staff are not very communicative. The Manager was very abrupt, rude and arrogant and certainly not welcoming to guests. There is a strange television set up in the rooms with different controls for digi box and television. Very confusing to get tv to operate. Ill fitting windows, window frames rotting and drafts coming through windows that makes rooms cold. Breakfast in the morning was reasonable but very much a help yourself with practically no staff on hand. Very difficult to get service in the afternoon. Overall I think this could be a nice hotel if run properly but it is very tired and needs a lot of refurbishment. I would not recommend to any of my business friends and certainly would not stay in the hotel again.
