With free parking and free Wi-Fi, this Tudor building dates back to 1604 and is situated on the banks of the Colne River, close to Colchester’s town center and the train station. Originally built in the 17th century, the Riverside Hotel has 18 rooms all with private bathrooms and tea/coffee making facilities. Both of Colchester’s train stations are just a short walk away, with London Liverpool Street only 50 minutes away by train. The port of Harwich is also within easy reach. Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and the hotel makes a great base from which to explore the area’s Roman, Saxon and Norman heritage. Colchester Castle and its beautiful grounds are just a short journey away. The East Anglian coastline is also within easy reach, as is Flatford Mill, the inspiration for John Constable's The Hay Wain. The hotel is just a short distance from the leisure center, the theater and Colchester Zoo, with nightclubs and Colchester’s main business parks also close by. Hotel Rooms: 18

The staff were friendly Old fashioned, car park small and lots of litter. The stairs too steep and dangerous in my opinion. The tea making facilities was placed with no power supply, so we had to rearrange the furniture. The kettle was broken, bath chipped, cobwebbs +++ in places. Plastic pillows which were awful and room too small. We were going to get another hotel and pay additional to stay there but was pointless as staying for one night only. The hotel was noisy and we were woken several times and in the morning where bedroom located over kitchen we could hear everything. This unfortunately was the worst hotel that my husband and I have ever experienced and could not wait to leave in the morning. When my father in law found this hotel we thought it looked nice, however this was totally misleading. We are not high maintennance people and I deal with the public daily which is why we did not complain to staff but could not wait to run out the door and leave. Sorry this is so negative

Staff were very attentive and friendly ,both on arrival and during our stay.We enjoyed our stay and thought it was Good value for money. The condition of the Hotel was fair ,Taking into account it's age , and the limitation's imposed due to it being a listed building . The breakfast that was served in the morning was exceptional and surpassed our expectation's. T.V. Could not be tuned in ! Water on tap's in the sink was not at an adequate preasure to have a wash ,we overcome this by using the bath tap's

I liked the position of the hotel, not only for its central situation, but also due to its closeness to the river. With re-development it could be truly spectacular. The staff were mildly friendly, and the breakfast was ok. I did not like : 1. The squalid smell in the hallway as you enter and on the stairs - the carpets in these areas are in desperate need of replacement for this reason. 2. The cobwebs in my room and the curtains that hung by only one third of the available hooks (I have photos). 3. The half-decorated condition of the bedroom corridors. 4. One of the combination locks on the door at the top of the stairs did not close automatically, and the outside door to the hotel was not locked or attended, so anyone could have wandered in from the street - I did not deel secure. 5. "Normal" noises made by people in the adjacent rooms and bathrooms could easily be heard through the bedroom walls. 6. The first thing obvious when I was shown my room was that one of the three main light bulbs did not work, but the staff member present did not notice. 7. The bedding was "suspect", especially the pillows which were of very poor quality and were very "used" - I was hesitant to put my head on them.

The receptionist, who checked us in on Thursday evening, was extraordinarily helpful and welcoming The building, although, clean is run-down, shabbily decorated & the security arrangements for access are almost non-existant. There is no lounge area & the breakfast was poor. We would have been much better off in a travellodge.

The hotel would benefit from a little updating and care to decoration. The room was dated and the pine furniture functional. The curtains were faded but would have been improved by being properly hung. The en suite was tiny and because the window was not frosted one was on view before getting in or out of the shower.

Kindness and helpfulness of the staff, fantastic location (real close to the North Train Station), very nice old building and really tasteful English breakfast! This was the second time we have been at this hostel and I highly reccomend it! There should be wifi 24 hours a day, and not only for few hours!

This hotel's location was convenient for where I was working. My room was ok but there were no toiletries in the bathroom and the shower was poor. There was a lot of noise at night with other guests returning late from pubs and clubs. Breakfast was nothing special. Overall - quite a basic hotel with no frills. I would not stay again or recommend unless looking for some that is very cheap.

the room was not clean as there were spiders and cobwebs in the corners of the room. The bed sunk and was far too small. The bathroom smelt like rotten dampness and the floor cold and dusty as it was stone tiles no carpeting. There was alot of noise from inside the hotel as guests slammed doors at 3am. Not a pleasant stay at all, the staff did not even ask how our night was. Then the breakfast was not to normal standards, the sausage being very chewy and the food cold. the orange juice was very watered down.

Not a lot, the staff were pleasant and the breakfast was nice but thats it i'm afraid. Dirty , cold room, broken bed, ripped bed linen, noisy, curtains ragged and hanging off rail, kettle worked when it wanted to, mouldy bathroom, freezing cold corridors which led to our room. Basically, a place that we will never use again

The location was good and there was parking available which is good for a town centre hotel The hotel is an old building and could be beautiful - sadly it needs a good refurb and some money investing in it. Plus it is not a self service breakfast - only on cereals on coffee - not on hot food.

Riverside Hotel is very convenient for the Town Centre. Very close to a lovely riverside walk. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful, especially Debra. It is very good value for money. Providing a really nice breakfast. The hotel has a lovely little bar, that is only open to residents, but shuts at 10.00pm. It would be nice for the bar to be open a little longer.

We paid £55 per night for two twin beds and two as-much-as-you-like breakfasts (basic English). We were happy Towels were on small/shrunk size, so we went out and bought more Plastic soap in a plastic bottle is not my taste so I bought Dove The hand basin was in a narrow space, and wet shaving would have done serious damage to my shoulders, so I did not shave In the order of things, these three items are not important .
