With free parking and free Wi-Fi, this Tudor building dates back to 1604 and is situated on the banks of the Colne River, close to Colchester’s town center and the train station. Originally built in the 17th century, the Riverside Hotel has 18 rooms all with private bathrooms and tea/coffee making facilities. Both of Colchester’s train stations are just a short walk away, with London Liverpool Street only 50 minutes away by train. The port of Harwich is also within easy reach. Colchester is England’s oldest recorded town and the hotel makes a great base from which to explore the area’s Roman, Saxon and Norman heritage. Colchester Castle and its beautiful grounds are just a short journey away. The East Anglian coastline is also within easy reach, as is Flatford Mill, the inspiration for John Constable's The Hay Wain. The hotel is just a short distance from the leisure center, the theater and Colchester Zoo, with nightclubs and Colchester’s main business parks also close by. Hotel Rooms: 18 Most recent booking for this hotel was yesterday at 13:49 from United Kingdom.

We liked especially that we could book in at 1pm - the only hotel in colchester that had this facility. also that it was near to the main station and the inner ring road.

The helpfulness of the staff. The atmosphere of a 400 year old building. There wasn't a chair in the room so I had to sit on the bed to watch TV which wasn't very comfortable. Because I am old ,and because it is such an old building ,the stairs were rather difficult for me.

We opted for this hotel due it being favourably priced compared with other hotels in the town. Additionally, it's nicely situated next to the river and only five minutes' walk into the town centre along a road that contains a number of decent eateries including Italian, Spanish, Thai and Indian. Although the hotel was quite cheap, we were of the opinion that it would have to be fairly well maintained as the builiding dates back over 400 years and would therefore be listed. This proved to be the case. Our room was comfortable with tv and generous amounts of tea, coffee, milk provided. The en-suite bathroom was small so not ideal for the fuller figure! However, there were no shower 'issues' like inconsistent temperature or feeble water pressure. There are no complimentary shampoos etc so pack your own stuff. The full English breakfast was very good too and came with toast, cereals and juice. Some establishments will quite happily serve you a reduced size brekkie if you don't like a particular item in it but at the Riverside, when I asked not to have a fried egg, I received extra bacon without even requesting. The following day, it was an extra sausage. Result! We spoke with at least three different staff members and found them all to be very pleasant and helpful. We had a very enjoyable three-night stay and wouldn't hesitate to use this hotel again although if we'd seen the phantom...

The hotel was great value for money. The room was well kept with modern facilities including a tv and a kettle to make tea. The hotel staff were very friendly and on hand if needed. Would definitely recommend.

Very friendly staff, excellent parking, very close to town centre, easy to come and go, perfect for what we needed for one night's stay. Room decor dated, but freshly painted and clean, I guess it fitted with the old building. Bathroom clean and recently fitted, very nice but missing a blind for the window...not handy when needing to use the loo in the night and your window faces along the main road :)

Service and staff were friendly and very good. This hotel is value for money. If I were to stay in Colchester again, I would stay at this hotel. Considering the value for money status, there was nothing that we did not like.

Good location, rooms clean, good breakfast and a 1300 check in I feel the outside area around the entrance and the walk way around the building could do with regular cleaning of cig butts, leaves etc

Nothing much. Tiny, poorly laid out room. Only one towel provided throughout stay. Noisy, dripping downpipe splashing water on to the window ledge next to my bed for all three days I was there. Poor soundproofing and very noisy fellow guests, addicted to running and shouting throughout the night. Difficult narrow staircase and corridor - moving luggage was very awkward.

I liked the location, very close to Castle Park. The building was interesting, being so old. They served quite a nice English breakfast. I didn't like the fact that the hotel had no reception, we weren't sure where to go. I didn't like the small, uncomfortable bed. I didn't like the very small bathroom, and I didn't like that there was no soap for the shower or a bathmat.

Pleasant staff This hotel is in a lovely ancient building but that's the best you can say about it. If they hadn't already taken the money for the room I would have gone elsewhere. The corridor was smelly, the en-suite was the smallest I've ever seen and the mattress was like lying on rocks. All the lampshades in the room were filthy and the lights in the bar area have no lampshades. The whole place has a dirty, shabby feel to it. We were dreading the breakfast thinking it would be like everything else but the two women serving/cooking were very nice and surprisingly the food was edible and quick. Don't book this on price, it's not worth the money.

Good location. Room basic but acceptable. No reception. No lounge. No food apart from breakfast. Would not call it a hotel, really only a b&B.

The room was warm (on one of the coldest nights of the year). I had a nice welcome when I arrived but after that it went downhill. The room was drab, dingy and dated. The net curtains were dirty. The bed was lumpy. I was woken by late 'revellers' in the night. The door to the breakfast room was actually locked at 9.25am; I was told that the chef left at 10am and they had stopped serving breakfast. Needless to say I insisted that I be served breakfast which was delivered with a lack off grace or respect. The person in charge was polite to another guest - extending the usual courtesies about their plans for the day. Of course the attitude to me stood out in sharp contrast. Normally when I stay at a hotel or B&B establishment the arrangements for paying are explained - I pay when I book in or at the end - I am given a receipt. When I asked about settling my bill (prior to leaving) I was told that they money had already been taken out of my account. This is the first time that I have had this experience. I have to check my account to ascertain how much money was taken. All in all a sharp contrast to a hotel that I stayed in last week in a different town which was a similar price. When I visit my son at Uni again in Colchester I will definitely pay more money for a better hotel.

Cheap rate for 3 people including breakfast which was of a reasonable standard. Room was adequate for an overnight stop as simply somewhere to crash after a party. Shabby exterior and interior. Popular with truckers............ No morning papers available. Manager/owner just about polite on arrival but not welcoming. Didn't appear to be keen on having guests arrive. TV remote issued on arrival once able to get someone's attention as bar area is locked up. On departure, staff could not be bothered to check you out and just asked for room card and remote to be posted through a letter box!

When i arrived at the Hotel, the receptionist was lovely and so helpful. She knew me and my friend was going out and she booked us a taxi. The hotel was very clean and i would stay again if i went back to Colchester. The only thing i disliked was the rude worker who was working on Sun 29th Jan. Very rude and unhelpful. If she was working the whole time of my stay, i wouldnt come back.
