The shower and toilet in my room was pretty awful, hair still in the shower basin and toilet was like something out of student digs.
lovely view over the river if you were on the right side of hotel - otherwise the car park. Girls doing the breakfast were very friendly.
Shabby and not decorated since "modernised" way back in 80s or so it looked. On arrival was told they couldn't supply a breakfast involving fresh fruit, "because we are a family run hotel" (Think that should be a positive benefit not an excuse for poor service) Overheard another guest asking for fruit at breakfast so I cannot be the only one! They did manage to supply yogurt and muesli in the end.
A bit shabby, one light in bedroom not working, only one bedside light, bathroom tap leaking
Handy for rail station, shops, restaurants, pubs and historic Colchester. Lovely breakfast and helpful and obliging staff.
Original timber framed hotel, my single room was tiny but wood panelled, reminded me of an old ships cabin. Very nice, olde worlde.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good and the whole experience was good value for money. Good location with being so close to castle park and the town centre.
Unfortunately our room was located right next to the road, so we heard a lot of noise throughout the night as the windows were only single glazed. The beds appeared quite old and were not particularly comfortable.
Staff very rude
The nutter who cooks breakfast
Location convenient to rail, high street, and sightseeing. The riverside location presented a wonderful view from the room and provided a great opportunity for riverside walks. The historic ambience was a joy and at the same time the room had all the conveviences that are expected today. The breakfast food was excellent and made to order. The staff were helpful and addressed all of our requirements
Nothing not to like
Excellent breakfast and value for money. Ground floor room very good for older traveller was good.
Very pleasant friendly welcome.Good quality breakfast with very pleasant service.Quite satisfactory.
Nowhere to keep our pushbikes secure.
Breakfast, staff and location all faultless. Room fine, though quite small.
Very noisy with main road and buses running outside from very early until late.
Location was convenient for me.
Dark narrow stairs and corridors. Something of a "Hostel" feel about it.
the people and the hotels age. Very confortable stay
the fighting and noise across the road in the early hours. Not the hotels fault
Quiet room. Friendly greeting on arrival. Convenient location. Text on TV.
Very cramped bathroom with only the toilet lid for a shelf and a microscopic washbasin. Only one towel provided per day. Absence of contact by staff for 15 minutes on arrival for breakfast at 07.30, necessitating enquiry at kitchen. Awkward position of TV in room, making viewing difficult.
Was good value for money. Good English breakfast. Room was small but adequate and reasonably clean. The two members of staff we met were very friendly. For £55 couldn't ask for much more.
Hotel is 400 years old but could do with a bit of TLC maybe. The outside was not very appealing either. Could do with a tidy up.
The lady who served breakfast was nice and friendly and capable. Breakfast good and freshly cooked to order. Location good.
Smelly bed linen. The attitude of the "managers??" Upon arrival Reception was locked and remained so for the rest of the stay, with the exception of breakfast, which is served there. Only access to staff is via a telephone in the entry hall and they take their time to come down to book you in. Bed in room 25 is the most uncomfortable I have ever had, although when I moaned about how uncomfortable it was, the lady at breakfast moved me, whilst I was out. That was good. However, on coming back, and trying to get a key for the room I had been moved to, the response was not good. Took a good 10 minutes for the invisible "Manager???" to arrive with the new key, and then they were dragging their family with them! Most unprofessional. No way I would EVER go back there. .
The location is perfect for a quiet rest but close enough to town for everything you could want, the rooms are spacious enough for a couple of days stop over, staff are friendly and very helpfull, would certainly stop there again.
Friendly staff very helpful breakfast was standard/ok. Customer parking free.
Dirty glasses, small room dust everywhere. No dressing table mirror was above bed silly setup. 55 pound to stay, I would say that is ok and nothing more
I liked how easy it was to find and the breakfast was good and filling.
Cobwebs in the rooms and that I could hear people in the other rooms
Value for money
Bed bases were a bit dirty and the quality of the decoration in the rooms were poor
Beds Comfortable Decent Breakfast
Bathroom could have been cleaner.
The hotel was a 16th century building and was quirky with charming features. It was in a lovely riverside location with Colchester centre and its attractions only a couple of minutes walk away. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was tasty.
The place had an unloved feeling. Generally grubby. There were places that hadn't been dusted and the ensuite was grubby with dirty plumbing. We only had an overnight stay. Wouldn't want to stay for a week.
Everything in the hotel were simply good. The river near the hotel, the small town, the park and the location were excellent.
Shaving mirror was not near the washstand and the room was small.
We liked thr friendlyness . The breakfast was excellient , al in all it was value for money .
The room we had (29) could have been better if the mirror had been on the apposite wall where the plugs then would been below for hair dryer ect. A shelve under the mirror would be ideal .
